- In the early 1900s, Florence Lawrence was one of the most recognizable women in America. She starred in over 300 silent films and is credited as being the world’s first film star. But in addition to her Hollywood hustle, Florence was also a bit of an inventor. In 1914, she created a mechanical signaling arm for cars, a precursor for the modern-day turn signal. At the push of a button, a flag would rise on the back bumper indicating if the driver wanted to turn left or right. Sadly, Lawrence never registered her design and she was never credited for her invention-nevertheless, her contributions to the automobile industry will live on forever.

@Kush Kamble: turn signals are mandatory by law, otherwise manufacturers of the larger german automobiles as well as the automobile owners would insist of getting a car without these lights.

Florence Lawrence deserves an Honorary Oscar's for being the "first Movie Star" in America.... It was not Mary Pickford, she was just more well known and had a longer film career.
Cool to see a woman contribute to cars even though people tend to think that only men contributed to cars.

Exactly! That's why "people tend to think..." What else _should_ they think? Fairytales?
Normal distribution in the graph makes people tend to think what they think. On the other hand, there will be a 5% exceptions on the extreme ends as always. There are male nurses and cooks in the same way there are female mechanics and astronauts. But still, the majority always falls under one predictive lifestyle choices. It's like men are A+C and women are B+D. At any point, A+C = B+D. But it doesn't mean A=B or C=D.

Wow. She made a switch move a flag a little bit, and then forgot to patent the design for 10 years. What a hero.
No, she invented the whole concept of the turn signal. Before you dismiss her invention, tell me what innovations have you made that have been replicated in every automobile made in the last century?
@@Paelorian No, she didn't invent our modern turn signal. She didn't patent her idea or anything. Our modern turn signal uses lights, and she DID NOT have that idea. Someone else did. And patented it.
And I'm not in the business of creating inventions, but at least I'm smart enough to know that if I DID make something I should patent it. She is no genius or hero. The turn signal was not inveted by her. She is just one of the earliest record of someone making a variation of it. A very illogical one, might I add.
