I asked him once which aircraft he personally favoured and he said the Hurricane without any hesitation. When I asked why he told me that he liked the Hurricane because it was more maneuverable even if it suffered a slight speed disadvantage at the time. He also commented that despite their reputation for catching fire, the Hurricane could take more battle damage that a Spitfire since it was a frame built aircraft with a fabric skin allowing enemy rounds to pass through with little or no damage. The Spitfire with it's monocoque construction was more susceptible to structural failure as the skin was the frame and it did not like holes being punched in it which weakened the entire aircraft. He was flying a Hurricane when he performed some act that earned him a D.F.M.

    Shame not many of these WW2 aircraft survived after the war but understandable. The thing that always strikes me now though is the bull shit the people working on them go through in looking after them. A day to do a short service that the old boy said took 1.5 hours. Building that Spit back up in another video took years when a load of basically and quickly trained women could build one in days. Like with everything today too much fuss and no substance. It takes 3 to do the job of 1 and the safety checks take longer than the work. We wouldn't win the battle of Britain today the planes would never get off the ground. More power to the generation of men and women that served back then. We are useless self important facsimiles in comparison today.

    • @duncanhamilton5841
      @duncanhamilton5841 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Give it a rest Dave. Back then we needed to get as many of them in the air as quickly as possible - if it was slapped together it didn't matter because it would likely have an operational lifespan of between 1 and 50 hours before it either fell apart, got shot down, crashed, or was replaced with a newer marque.
      Now we've got all the time in the world, and only a handful of Hurris (and only a few dozen Spits), lets take our time with it, make sure it's right, and make it last a lifetime. Not least because if you rush a job and break something, you can't wander off to Stores (via the NAAFI for a quick brew and smoke) to get a replacement.

      @@davetaylor4741 well educate yourself then, and you may start to get it. It’s just been explained to you in pretty simple terms but still claim not to get it🙄🙄🙄

      @@Jabber-ig3iw What is there to get. When the chips are down or war you get your finger out. Like a Vivid vaccine in under a year. In times of peace you create jobs for the boys by keeping keeping on. Like normal vaccine development time 5 to 10 years. Most things can be done quicker but circumstance dictates the pace.

    The Brits lost more battles than they won, if the air campaigns of ww2 were rated like boxing matches then the germans would be undefeated world champions. Change my mind...

      That makes no bloody sense on many levels . First eh no we didn’t , second it’s war not boxing so what exactly is your point , third Germany lost on land sea and air so hardly undefeated , and lastly you can keep your mind as it is .... means FA to us anyway .

      @@kevinthomas2662 Let’s all take the time to show our appreciation for “moist crack by the sea”. He has taken time off from saving the world in his PC games and manically pulling himself off, to educate us all, with his great wisdom and intellect. Let us all show him the respect he deserves…… OH! I see you already have.
