Just started listening to Fred Dibnahs Biography... apparently he used to fret that all the really interesting stuff from his TV programmes ended up on the cutting room floor... This is a good example of that.. Fortunately his Producer - who wrote the book - is still compiling it all for the more technically minded to enjoy soon!
Guy is a National Treasure. As a 2 wheel racing fan, I first heard him interviewed after an IoM race. He was speaking so fast and using race jargon with his wild accent. I understood Nothing. So I played each interview back until I understood... It takes a special type to risk life and limb in pursuit of speed. Guy is the perfect individual to tell these WW2 stories.
Ha, snap! I stumbled over the TT3D documentary and found Guy that way. Proceeded to watch everything he's made and even read his books. It also led me to the TT, and I've now watched so much Irish Road Racing that l can understand almost all that's said, as well as Lincolnshire/Northern accents much better. Like you said, you can teach yourself, but man.. when l started it doesn't even sound like English. 😄
My late grandfather worked on Rolls Royce Merlin engines in Spitfires for training aircraft. He could single handedly tear down an entire engine and rebuild it. He made special test equipment to verify the operation of turbo chargers in the higher altitudes.
Guy seems to me that he ain't bothered by the fame he just uses it to learn stuff and do the things he's got a real interest in, definitely would be exactly the same off camera standing around with a brew just chatting, plus all that road racing makes him a legend with massive balls
Breath of fresh air is our Guy . Great to watch . Better then most of the crap served up from most tv broadcasters. And what I like about him is his one of those Brits who says I'll have a go at that know matter how risky it is . Top geezer .
The pilot who chopped of the tail of the Dornier Bomber his Hurricane crashed in to a street in London. About 20 years ago the street , crash site was dug up and some of the remains where found about 20 feet down and reunited with the pilot they I think found the control panel and joy stick. It has been featured on You Tube.
@@jethromaris624 I do remember seeing it on youtube they had to close the street to traffic and had a narrow window a certain amount of time to complete the task they had to obtain permission from I think from London council. and yes they did find some bits and bobs and they presented them to the pilot who had not touched them since WW2.
Hey Guy, you usually speak so fast and that is ideal for learning English. A few years ago I didn't understand almost at all what you say, but now it's easy to understand :) And also your book "My autobiography" is awesome. P.S. Your long time unknown fan from Ukraine ;)
Perhaps watching some Australian shows might help ? We talk a bit slower. David Attenborough docos though, would be by far the best option 👍 #SlavaUkraini Bohdan, the whole world is behind your proud and heroic country 👍
Not sure if you'll ever read this Guy. Alright my grandad wasn't a pilot but he was a train driver. He drove petrol tankers round the country behind his steam train. I have all his diaries through ww2. They're quite interesting to read. Also going off what he wrote the modern trains we have now aren't as fast as the trains they replaced
Went for my first date with my wife in the Orchard; Ruislip. I was 19, as I went to get served I was asked for ID, I produced my RAF f1250 iD and the guy said “sorry Sir, what do you want, anything for the buys in blue”. I left the bar with a balance of pride and embarrassment for being called out. The Orchard still stands and is now a beefeater restaurant, but in the bar they display the polish squadrons insignia.
I used to have trouble understanding Guy, but I don't anymore. Since then, I've found Guy is a helluva story teller. He once said his racing was to have a story to tell when "in yer cups" and he spins a fine yarn.
ayy, he is from the north east of Britain, Grimsby. My Mum was born about 100km to the East in Birmingham, and he has a much broader accent than the Birmingham/Brummy accent. (She had an Anderson Shelter in her back yard during the War). It kinda adds to the tale I think..
James Brindley Nicolson was flying with 249 (Gold Coast) Squadron out of Boscombe Down where I worked for many years. The families centre at Boscombe Down is named for him. Sadly he died in 1945 in the Far East when the B24 Liberator he was a passenger in crashed.
Excellent extra content, should have been in the actual film. Much better, more accurate and detailed than the spitfire one from a few years ago, I thought that was quite poor.
Really confused me at first, thought that the commentator said 'The De-Havilland Museum near Woodford'.....It's the Avro museum that's near Woodford, the De-Havilland museum is near Watford.....Seems that my hearing is going as well as my eyesight LOL.
I would have thought that brave pilot James Nicholson would be ghastly burned and scarred for life. But on the photo that I found, his face is normal and he looks quite happy. He must have had terrible burn scars on his hands, though. If you ever watch the movie, "The Battle of Britain (1969)," it's an OK movie, not great. But the aerial sequences are superb. In one scene, a WAAF member is introduced to a pilot who survived his Hurricane being on fire. You'll probably think, 'they had some decent prosthetics to give him such a... look.' Those weren't prosthetics. They actually had an old Battle of Britain veteran who was horribly burnt, act as himself, almost 30 years after the battle.
I flew an F4 simulator (AFROTC) at Homestead AFB. I crashed 7 times at take off. Once they finally let me airborne I shot down 2 "enemy". In reality, I'd have been dead.
❤️🇬🇧 big up poland. As NATO. Look after it. After the Ottomans, French, Austro -Hungarians..Russians and Prussians then bloody Naziz.to the to the point of delaring there was no such country as Poland. Poland has the right to be cross. One day i hope to go there.😁
I was looking forward to watching this, but shut it off soon after the swearing started. hence the thumbs down. Swearing ruined what otherwise might have been a good show. There are still some people who like clean mouths.
You have to be American. You are the only people in the West who moan about swearing. Us Brits and Aussies swear all the time. How old are you? 12 years old? If you are a man what is wrong with you? How will hearing 'bad words' affect your life? Pathetic. Grow up.
Really struggle with Guy Martin. He seems like a really nice chap but I just don’t think he’s a good TV personality. I was really looking forward to this documentary and whilst it was interesting I feel that Guy was a bit flat throughout it. The McGregors BOB documentary and bomber command doc was way better.
He’ll be the first to admit that he’s not a tv personality. He’s an extraordinary guy who just likes doing the things he’s interested in and folks like watching him. I wish youngsters had as much interest, get up and go as Guy.
I think with Guy it depends on the format, more than with 'typical' presenters. I can't imagine anyone better for 'the boat that guy built' and 'how Britain worked'. For a more 'traditional' format, such as this, he's probably not the best Not bad, mind, I'm still happy to watch whatever he wants to make.
He’s a truck mechanic , works with his father , mostly Scania , when he’s not doing telly or racing bikes, met him a few years ago when he was up at our local transport museum at Alford transport museum in Aberdeenshire , he loaned out one of his racing bikes to the museum , very down to earth chap .
Yes, he's an anti-personality, a down to earth bloke, and this could be possibly why people like him? I hold him in the highest regard. If you can bear it, it might be good to do a bit more watching to find out who he really is, read his books, understand, and appreciate his exploits. Like another commentator noted, there is no better person to recount these events, I bet the young pilots would approve.

Just found this channel. The brittish is bloody awesome at telling and preserving their history. Guy is brilliant!

23:40 that’s crazy and it’s the reason they only wore seatbelts in the spitfire as the fabric/doped material goes up in flames in a matter of seconds

The Hurricane is a great plane, but what a death trap for the pilots !! 😲
Guy Martin's number 1 on my list to have a beer with my other 2 are dead steve Erwin and Peter Brock
