I have been casting replacement parts for missing and broken parts on hilts of high grade Civil War era and earlier swords for the past 25 years. I can tell you many things about mold making, wax injection, investing the wax patterns, burnout and casting but will make only one point now. Just like in blade forging, if all of the parameters are not met by following specific process procedures in each of the processes, the results will be less than desired. Since there are a number of processes involved in getting great results in the castings you will need to invest in the right tooling and then learn how to use it for each of many processes. Just like blade making, it’s not as easy as it seems it should, would or could be. But when you master the skills, it will come very naturally. It took me many years to accumulate the knowledge and skill I now have. And, just like you with blade making, we are still learning.

I know... hut it was obviously recorded the day after the failed casting... it's just being used now that they have enough additional content to warrant a whole video. Lots of waiting for stuff in the mail, and more to boot since he still hasn't gotten that new kiln.
Yay for living in the middle of nowhere! ;)

Interesting lesson in the notion of "order of operations" that you've spoken of before. Hindsight, which is oh so 20-20, would suggest that being able to create casting models, at will, is best achieved before doing away with your master.

Will, your steady hand at carving is superb. Both of you are a pleasure to watch. Well done guys. One heck of a winter to join us here in the US Alec. Keep up the good work guys. I'll see you on the next episode!

Snipe is a game bird found in Wisconsin and the UP, and possible other northern states. Easiest way to hunt them is to stand in an open field adjacent to a swamp at dusk,as they fly back to the swamp to roost for the night.

For the wax casting, try to preheat your mold a bit. Makes the whole working easier and the wax flows better into the details, but takes longer to cool down.
