I first heard this song when I was a DJ for a FM Top 40 station in Oregon many years ago and we got to play Donny's version from time to time. The station PD thought it popular enough to include it. Cold Blood was a fun band in their prime. I think they still play shows every once in awhile.

We seem to have the same music taste.
I heard Tower of Power around 1971-72 and they have been my favorite band since then, but already by that time "Valdez" was my all time hit and still is! 🇸🇪

Very familiar with the Cold Blood Version, of Valdez in the Country, always like this fine group. Still listening them.

Thanks Tony! You're a hip guy 😂. Don't throw your hip out. Seriously, you fit a righteous need for piano players who are above beginning but below Barry Harris ( ha! Ha! Aren't we all ?) So keep it up 💪👍. Some more funk fusion stuff like Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. Also explain polychords ala ECM style jazz. I feel there is a real need for that. Also most working pianists want to sound hipper than what they are so any souful gospel stylings like Les McCann would be appreciated. Starting out I loved Michael Omartian, John Hicks, Max Middleton, Leon Russell and Elton John. Their bluesy soulful rhythimic style truly excited me! Even today I still get a lot of compliments when I do my jazzy/gospel feel. Of course being a white B-3 player in a Black Baptist Church doesn't hurt either. That's also a great way to learn... Go study with gospel Hammond players. Thanks again!

One of my favourite tunes. I don't have a musical bone in my body (UK speak for no musical talent), but I found this fascinating . Exquisite performance, made my spine tingle!

Wow, huge thanks for this. Trumpet player here, and I just couldn't get the changes (I think the sus chords threw me off). Nice solo; wanted to hear you keep going with it; but anyway thanks for making this vid; it's one of my all time favorite tunes. Now I think I can play it, LOL

Wow tony!!!!! What memories. I looked at my phone this morning and saw this link and couldn’t believe. Valdez in the country. Hadn’t heard that name or song in 50 years. Had played it back then in my band in Northern California. What a great tune and fun to play. Will do. And cold blood. Thanks for the memories!!!!!

Thanks Tony - this really brought me back to my cover band in the 70s, when we played this as a fun instrumental. Really appreciate the chart and all the great hint about what can work under these chords. I just wish you would have been around back then when I was trying to figure all this out by ear. It would have saved me some time! David J.

The 1-4-5 line over the 7+9 rally has a sweet vibe, reminds me of Joe Sample. How did you arrive at this?

Very cool. Question - what drum machine are you using. What is the hand controller and does it allow you to change the tempo of the drum machine as you are playing?
You should show some more of your studio jams - very interesting.

It's just a drum beat from the Yamaha MODX keyboard.

It would be more challenging with piano alone, or with piano and base alone. Any one can sound pretty good with all the extra instruments. You need chords on the piano that are more exotic or more powerful substitutions. These fusion songs are very different from traditional jazz in that the harmony has to be more with it or the piano chords sound weak.
