(The video above is an intro video to the series to help introduce what topics Dr. Brant Pitre will be covering in this 3-part series).
Have you ever wondered where did the Bible come from? Or, how did we get the Bible? What's the history of the Bible and it's form as we have it today? Also, who even wrote the Bible and how long did it take? Did someone codify the writings as "The Bible," or did it simply slide down a rainbow?
In this exciting 3-part series available through Catholic Productions at the links above and below, Dr. Brant Pitre takes you on a tour of how we got the Bible.
In this series, Dr. Brant Pitre will cover a host of topics and questions such as:
• What is the overarching history of the Bible and how it came to be?
• Why are there different Bibles and which one is the real Bible?
• How did the Old Testament Canon formation come about?
• During the time of Jesus was there a set canon or list of books that made up the Old Testament?
• What is the history of the Jewish Bible? Did different sects like the Sadducees, Pharisees, and Essenes all have different ideas of what actually constituted what Christians call today "The Old Testament"?
• Were there any other writings swirling around at the time of Christ that are not found in the Old Testament?
• What are the Dead Sea Scrolls that were found at Qumran in the 1940's and what do they have to tell us about the history of the Bible, and the Old Testament in particular?
• Was there ever a Council of Jamnia where Rabbis got together and officially codified the contents of what Christians today call "The Old Testament"?
• Who wrote the New Testament and how did its canon form?
• What was the early Church doing without a Bible, before it was written and before it was compiled into one "library"?
• How was the New Testament canon and Old Testament canon finally formed by the Church in the 4th century, and by what authority was this decision made?
• During the Protestant Reformation, were books of the Bible taken out by some Reformers or did the Reformers disclose that the Catholic Church had added books to the Bible?
• Can Sola Scriptura be justified.... even by the Bible?
If you are curious about the History of the Bible, who wrote it, how we now have an official Bible that many of us perhaps take for granted, then join Dr. Pitre in this series, The Origin of the Bible, to learn more.

Can't get enough Pitre ❤
Hi the405rockstar,
Thank you for your question -- many have posed it before. We tried putting previews up (we post that in the initial text as the video begins), so people can see what type of questions will be addressed in Dr. Pitre's presentations. So, this is supposed to act as a "primer" or to get a flavor for the topics covered on this set, which can be found at the website above. Thank you for your inquiry.

Thanks for your post. Certainly, pen names have been used in writings around the world throughout human existence (as well as that NOT being the case)... but my question is what is the extant evidence that pen names, in fact, are being used in this instance, especially given the ample internal evidence in the gospels (in all of the manuscripts we have) and external (to the new testament) early church (1st and 2nd century) attestations to the contrary by men who knew the apostles?
Any chance we can get the entire series somewhere???? This would be huge for my family

Irenaeus:
"Matthew also issued among the Hebrews a written Gospel in their own language, while Peter and Paul were evangelizing in Rome and laying the foundation of the Church" (Against Heresies, 3, 1:1 [A.D. 180]).
The first King James Bible has all the deuterocanonical books.
I’m going to translate this video to Spanish.
Yup. They got rid of them all.
God bless everyone
truth shall set you free.
Cambridge historian Eamonn Duffy, in Saints and Sinners, his recent book on the papacy, best sums up the other evidence:
"There is no reason to doubt the ancient tradition that both Peter and Paul were put to death in Rome during the Neronian persecutions of the mid-60s A.D..."
We all know that the Bible was put together in 393 & 394 in the Council of Hippo and Carthage. The Protestant changed it in 16 ce to suit their needs.
The seventy three books of the Holy Bible, 46 in the old testament and 27 in the new testament is a perfect number. Seven represents the 7 holy sacraments of the Catholic Church while three symbolizes the Holy Trinity in one God. The Holy sacraments and the Holy Trinity are the basic dogmas of the church which the protestants have been trying to oppose or refute but they have failed because the more they assail them the more these dogmas become stronger because the author of these dogmas is Christ Himself the founder of the church.
So glad to read you ! I came to the same conclusions (ancient evangelical). I want to say that Luther by removing those 7 books, removed symbolicaly "God", leaving 66 books... Making the protestant version a book of men...full of division (66)...
Joy and peace in the name of Jesus !
Martin Luther added the word alone and took out seven books of the 73 books of Catholic and had only 66.
Yes he did Arnold, Here’s a good lesson on old Martin Luther you can pass on. ......
We get the doctrine of “faith alone” from Martin Luther. In his first German Translated Bible, (Lut1545), he actually had the audacity to add the word “alone” to read you are saved by “faith alone” in Romans 3:28.
This is straight from Martin Luther’s 1545 Bible where he added the word “alone”
(LUT1545) Romans 3:28 - So halten wir es nun, daß der Mensch gerecht werde ohne des Gesetzes Werke, (allein ‘Alone’) durch den ( Glauben ‘Faith’. )
Here is the quote from Martin Luther about Luther adding the word “alone”. It’s pretty shocking!
“If your Papist annoys you with the word ‘alone’ - Rom. 3:28, tell him straightway, Dr. Martin Luther will have it so: Papist and asses are one and the same thing. Whoever will not have my translation, let him give it the go-by: the devil’s thanks to him who censures it without my will and knowledge. Luther will have it so, and he is a doctor above all the doctors in Popedom.” (ref. Amic. Discussion, 1, 127,’The Facts About Luther,’ O’Hare, TAN Books, 1987, p. 201. Cf. Also J. Dollinger, La Reforme et les resultants qu’elle a produits. (Trans. E. Perrot, Paris, Gaume, 1848-49), Vol III, pg. 138).
James 2:24 - the phrase “faith alone” only occurs once in the Bible. “Man is justified by works and NOT faith alone.” Unlike what some churches teach, no where in Scripture does it say that man is justified or saved by “faith alone.” To the contrary, man is not justified by faith alone. A person is justified by faith and works acting together, which comes solely from God’s divine grace. Faith alone never obtains the grace of justification. Also, the word “justified” is the same word Paul uses for justification in Rom. 4:3 in regard to Abraham (so you cannot argue James is not referring to “justification” in James 2:24 unless they argue Paul wasn’t in Rom. 4:3 either).
Will the real Bible please stand up 😂😂😂🤣😭 I love this guy
2:40. Who made the decision (of what books are in the canon) and by what authority did they make that decision? That's the whole ballgame.
The Holy Spirit. If they somehow got it wrong. Then all Christianity is wrong
@@rpgfeatures793 Ok ... but every church will claim the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So that isn't really an answer. The question remains: how do we know which are truly inspired. This is exactly the question Dr. Pitre identifies.

An idea can't be quantified. Does that make it unreal?
Weeper Man, not quite sure I'm tracking with you. Care to flesh out what you are getting at? Thanks for stopping in!
I was in chat with someone mocking the notion of believing in God. My point is, an idea can't be observed or measured; that doesn't mean we don't have them. They simply aren't subject to measurable proof. Much like what Jesus said about the Spirit- you see the effect, but don't know where it came from or where it's going. I love your channel, keep up the good work!
I'm sorry I didn't realize I was speaking to an atheist. I really don't expect you to understand this then. Why are you even watching this video? I hope you are atleast interested in believing in God? Or are you just here to post little comments cursing Christians for their faith?
Dionysius of Corinth:
"You have also, by your very admonition, brought together the planting that was made by Peter and Paul at Rome and at Corinth; for both of them alike planted in our Corinth and taught us; and both alike, teaching similarly in Italy, suffered martyrdom at the same time" (Epistle to Soter of Rome [A.D. 166] in a fragment from Eusebius, History of the Church, 2, 25:8).
The Holy Spirit. If you believe in the Holy Trinity you can’t really believe scripture alone is authority because you know the divine spirit of God exists. But you can’t argue over that so we rely on the Bible to give us something to fight and judge others about.
I think you meant to say Council of Nicaea. That's the 1st meeting that took place under Constantine (who was not a Christian by way, but a pagan-not till later on did he become a Christian)
This was to settle a debate about Jesus divinity. Some argue he wasn't God and but the majority said he was. So hench a doctrine was adopted and made into a dogma. The Nicene Creed was born where both Catholic and Protestant profess to confirm their faith in One God in the concept of a Trinity.

Naturalhit,
Actually, it is spelled St. Ignatius of Antioch (disciple of St. John the Apostle). He first coined the term "Catholic Church" in 110 AD not 102 AD. He is considered to be one of the Apostolic Fathers of the Church.
the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ who built his Church upon Peter. Jesus also granted authority to the Apostles. When the Apostles died, their authority was pass down to their sucessors, the bishops and Popes of today.

The question is why do Catholics give tradition a higher standing than the Word of God?
Well, sacred tradition and sacred scripture go hand-in-hand. Through sacred tradition and their infallible teaching authority, the Church compiled, organized, and canonized sacred scripture. Scripture flows from the Holy Spirit, through the inspired writers, and through the Church (of which Christ is the head). There are not two things (scripture and tradition) that are at odds with one another. They are one thing, in harmony with itself.
@@kdmdlo Where in the Bible does it say the tradition of men has been inspired by the Holy Spirit? Stop making up things (and words) to justify Roman Catholic false doctrine and teachings in the guise of God breathed Scripture.
RCC false teaching passed off as tradiion equal to Holy Scripture includes among others:
Infallibility of the pope
Only the RCC has the authority to interpret Scripture
The pope is God's representative on earth
The RCC is necessary for salvation
Mary is a co-redeemer
Purgatory
Indulgences
Prayer to dead saints, etc., etc.
All of these false beliefs and traditions of men are at odds with Scripture.
@@johnbrowne3950 Hold on there, brother. Let's deal with one thing at a time, shall we? We can get to those other things in time. Let's stay focused on the Bible and its origins for the moment. First, nowhere do the inspired authors of the biblical texts say which books do or do not belong in the Bible. Right? So you can't point to the Bible as a source to determine what belongs in the Bible (and even if you did, that would be invalid, circular logic anyway). So who decides what's books are in the Bible and which are not? Christ didn't leave us a Bible, so it wasn't directly from Him. Someone had to decide. And by what authority do they have the right/duty to make such decisions? So that's my two-part question for you, as a protestant. Who made the decisions, and by what authority did they make those decisions? Do you know? Can you justify their decisions?
@@kdmdlo Is the Catholic Church claiming the Old Testament as well?
Where does it say a committee will decide what is the Word of God?
The Bible is inspired and has authority not because a church declared it but because God made it so.
The Bible does not owe its existance to the Catholic church but to the authority, power and providence of God (Psalm 12:7).
You wrongly claim the Bible is a Catholic book, but why does it nowhere mention a pope, an archbishop, a parish priest, a nun etc.?
Why are indulgences, prayers to saints, adoration of Mary, veneration of relics and images left out of the Bible as well as many other rites ad ceremonies?
Plus the fact all living Christians are saints.
All Christians are priests.
Baptism is by immersion.
Call no man 'Father' (in terms of authority).
A bishop is to be married etc., etc.
@@johnbrowne3950 Again, John, you're not answering the basic question. Who decides what is and what is not in the Bible? And by what authority do they make that decision?
Not Constantine...he did not compile the Bible at all.
The Early Church Fathers did, they were the disciples of the Apostles themselves... they compiled the Old Testament and the
New Testament into the Bible which we Catholics use. We Catholics have the same Bible from 2,000 years ago uncorrupted. The church Fathers compiled the Bible with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, not man made.

The Dead Sea Scrolls only include for books of the apocrypha, and that is the oldest OT.
It also doesn't include 2 Esdras (which is in Catholic OT's), which was written around A.D. 68, which was long after Jesus talked about "the Law & the Prophets," & "the Law & the Prophets & the Psalms," referring to the OT.
The DSS have all the books of the Greek bible, that is the complete deuterocanon of the STP period. It includes all the four Esdras books, all of the Maccabees books every book is there excepting the actual apocryphal books which never make it into the Greek bible. Only a part of Ester is missing
@@catholicanswers8867 non of the Esdras books were produced after Jesus .

In the Greek, "1 & 2 Esdras" is what modern Bibles refer to as Ezra & Nehemiah. But the "2 Esdras" which is sometimes called "4 Esdras" is what I'm talking about, which was written AFTER the time of Christ, but was found among the DSS, as well as in early versions of the Septuagint. And since all 4 Maccabees were found in the DSS, and if you (Bible Study Helper) are using the DSS as support for the Catholic OT, then why are 3 & 4 Maccabees NOT in the Catholic OT, since they were in the DSS, as well as other books not found in the Catholic OT?

A common Protestant point is that there is a verse, I forget which one, which instructs Christians to consult the Jews for the canon of the Bible. Well, yes. They did. What the Jews were using at the time was the Septuagint. There are actually no JEWISH writings from that time attacking the Apocrypha. If Jews were walking around with a Canon and openly claiming that these extra books weren’t inspired that’s another deal. If anything we have later (Jewish) writers questioning the canonicity of Esther. If you’re gonna go on later opinion of rabbis, it’s a fast and loose game

You are so wrong. Christianity was born in Jerusalem. In the Upper Room where the Apostles recieved the H.S. The Apostles travelled all over the place and spread it. They were called Followers of the Way. Paul in Antioch called them Christians. The word Catholic didn't come into picture till 102 AD when Ignaeous called the conversion of both Gentiles and Jews universal-Catholic. In 16 ce. they called themselves Catholic in order to seperate themselves from the Protestant Reformation.
THE WHITE BLANKING OUT IN THE VIDEO IN EVERY SECTION ...... IS ANNOYING
The books, including the gospels and letters were in wide circulation well before anyone bound them together in one collection. Just because a group of people confirm the authenticity of the books does not mean that group gave anybody anything. You can say it stapled them together and called it a Bible, but the content had nothing to do with Catholicism!!!!
Well, except that the authors themselves were of the original church Christ founded ... the early, universal church, whose name eventually became the Catholic Church.
Importantly, what is considered scripture does matter (otherwise some might wrongly claim that the Book of Mormon is legitimate scripture). So how do we know what was inspired by the Spirit and what was not? Someone (or some organization) gifted with divine authority* has to make that determination. So, yeah. This matters.
* In passing, by what authority did Luther remove certain books?
@@kdmdlo The ROMAN church the way it is today does not teach what the apostles did. Therefore it is not the original church.
@@kkdoc7864 Well, so you're going to have to give examples to support your first sentence. Also, by what authority did Luther and the other reformers revise the Bible?
@@kdmdlo the Bible was not revised. The only books that have always been controversial (the OT Apocrypha) were still in many bibles, but those are considered uninspired, not quoted by Jesus or the apostles, with contrary doctrine to the known inspired scripture, and not accepted by Jews. @@kkdoc7864 Really? It wasn't revised? Luther's 1545 bible contained the deuterocanonicals. And, yet, his later version did not ... so he was revising himself. What I had to do .i gave it all to HIM.i now live in Colombia South America with my wife who is Colombian, giving out tracts to everyone, and cookies and cold drinks to the poor.my wife who is also divorced understands about
What it means to be divorced and CHRISTIAN,and we live by the Bible.together we are waiting to go home to be with HIM.thats my story in a nutshell, CIAO
Please stop spreading lies about the catholic church. I assume you did not realy understand the catholic church teachings, since as you say yourself, you were not devout. Catholics DO NOT WORSHIP STATUES, DO NOT WORSHIP MARY, WE WORSHIP ONLY GOD AND VENERATE (HONOR) MARY AS THEOTEKOS, meaning "bearer of God". She did bring God to the world. Or do you deny that? Catholics are very christocentric, read at least 2 scriptures from the bible in mass EVERYDAY (not only sundays), receive CHRIST HIMSELF in the Eucharist..so what else do you want from catholics?
@@dominic5520 : To add to the explanations above:
If you miss Mass on Sunday you DO commit a mortal si.
And.
If you die in a state of mortal sin you WILL go to hell.
Your Catholic teachers were right.
Perhaps you just don't like the truth.
I will pray for you.

GOD NEVER ASKED ANYBODY TO WRITE A BIBLE............NATURE IS THE REAL BIBLE WRITTEN BY GOD HIMSELF
Dr. Brant is now one of the greatest biblical scholar in this country. I am not; but understand some symbolism such as 6 is an incomplete number 666 = the devil. 7 is a complete week with God! used many time more as and adjective meaning complete than a number. 3 is a witnessing number and a sacred number Jesus raised 3 people from the dead, himself on the last day.
Luther took out 7 sacred books from the original 73 books (complete and Sacred- Protesters have 66 books???? not a good thing. Also only occurrence in the new testament is John 6 66 which is when the people all abanded Jesus because they didn't believe in the real presence of God in the new testament..
The Bible is not sufficient evidence for the Bible only God is.
well the source of this..(banning the bible s a catholic source) and its pretty much common knowledge as apart of their inquisitions against christian as well.
Another false Catholic heresy, there seven books of the Apocrypha are full of mistakes and contradictions, google it and see for yourself. But if they were inspired books, why is it that over 200 times in the New Testament, Jesus and the Apostles refer to the old Testament and not one time refer to any of the seven books of the Apocrypha?
Do you realise the speaker of the video just showed you at minute 9:45 of the video that the very 1st version of the King James Bible of 1611, which was a protestant bible, had the 'apocrypha' which you seem to be condemning? Or do you admit that the very 1st protestants who produced the 1st King James bible were heretics?
EXPLANATION: Many critics of the perfect Bible like to point out that the original King James had the Apocrypha in it as though that fact compromises its integrity. But several things must be examined to get the factual picture.
First, in the days in which our Bible was translated, the Apocrypha was accepted reading based on its historical value, though not accepted as Scripture by anyone outside of' the Catholic church. The King James translators therefore placed it between the Old and New Testaments for its historical benefit to its readers. They did not integrate it into the Old Testament text as do the corrupt Alexandrian manuscripts.
That they rejected the Apocrypha as divine is very obvious by the seven reasons which they gave for not incorporating it into the text. They are as follows:
1. Not one of them is in the Hebrew language, which was alone used by the inspired historians and poets of the Old Testament.
2. Not one of the writers lays any claim to inspiration.
3. These books were never acknowledged as sacred Scriptures by the Jewish Church, and therefore were never sanctioned by our Lord.
4. They were not allowed a place among the sacred books, during the first four centuries of the Christian Church.
5. They contain fabulous statements, and statements which contradict not only the canonical Scriptures, but themselves; as when, in the two Books of Maccabees, Antiochus Epiphanes is made to die three different deaths in as many different places.
6. It inculcates doctrines at variance with the Bible, such as prayers for the dead and sinless perfection.
7. It teaches immoral practices, such as lying, suicide, assassination and magical incantation.
If having the Apocrypha between the Testaments disqualifies it as authoritative, then the corrupt Vaticanus and Sinaiticus manuscripts from Alexandria, Egypt must be totally worthless since their authors obviously didn't have the conviction of the King James translators and incorporated its books into the text of the Old Testament thus giving it authority with Scripture.
@@KingJames-nk2cg But they considered the Septuagint inspired and the Deuterocanonicals were included in it. . Several books of the OT are not quoted , that does not mean they were not considered inspired. The greek NT was more widely used than the Hebrew in the translation
when Jesus was about to go to heaven, he warn his follwer, many false Chrits
will appear. They will mislead people and the very elect
No interest in the Roman church and other western churches regarding the Jewish roots from the old testament, and the persecution of the Jewish people totally forgotten. Just theological arguments the books are more important than the people of Jesus the jews from centuries of persecutions.
The Apocrypha were uninspired books that should not be in the Bible. The Catholics put in the Apocrypha so as to justify heresies like Indulgences and Purgatory.
By what authority have you made that determination/decision?
...Says somebody who has not read the books about which (s/he) thinks (s/he) is speaking.
70 AD number one you personally could not even name all of the apochrapha .
That being said if you really don't know what you are talking about ; your opinion means very little .
But I would like to mention that the apochrapha are mentioned in the Protestant Bibles .
And that the apochrapha contain historical events that are taught all over the world as history and in some cases the Catholic apochrapha have been interested to preserve both history and theology for even Protestants .
If you was to study the amount of influence that the apochrapha have on your own relationship with the Bible .
Let me give you an example so that you may stop embarrassing yourself among knowledgeable people .
The prophet Jeremiah did not write .
Jeremiah had a secretary named Baruch . In the book of Jeremiah , the prophet says that Baruch is a true prophet of God . The influence of Baruch goes well beyond the prophet Jeremiah , whom you ignore in light of your duty of hatred towards the true church .
Baruch is credited with a reconstruction of the Jewish Bible from Genesis to the middle of the historical books . To make this short if you don't trust the apochrapha and it's writers ,you need to get your king James and pitch it in the trash . Of course you have ten thousand rebuttals but the truth is you can not escape Catholic influence and call yourself Christian .
You have never read the second books . Spoken from true ignorance.
You should get a library card and get away from fundy videos for a month or two.
@XBAGREMX The bible is inspired by God, not the word of God like other denominations teach. It is a vessel, an instrument for Gods Living Word. Let me explain. You listen to the music on your iPod, right. So your iPod is music? No. It's a device, an instrument for which music can be heard. Only when u take the steps to play it and attentively listening do u start to be inspired and jam. The Catholic church teaches lectio Divina, it is a process to read the bible so it becomes the liv
catholic church didnt have anything to do with bible.. they banned the bible from 500 ad to 1500 ad.
frank0067
you need to learn some history, your statements are way off base, willful ignorance can be corrected.
Jesus never said he was God no where in the bible. Psalms 84:6
states, all men are Gods.Luke3:38 states, that Adam is the son of God. If you'll read any between Mark,Matth,Luke and John, you will noticed, the bible emphasizes more about the coming of the [son of man] then the coming of son of God. The bible also states that Elijah was the son of man. Matthew 10:11 says, the son of man comes to save the people who are lost. In Matthew 27:45-49, Jesus was calling Elijah to save him from the cross
I dont see where it says that all men are Gods>>>>Psalms 84:6
“Who passing through the valley of Baca, make it a well: the raine also filleth the pooles.” www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/1611_Psalms-84-6/
Of course Adam is the son of God because Adam was not born from a human woman. Jesus is the New Adam www.catholicstand.com/jesus-christ-the-new-adam/
This is according to the KJV 1611 >>>
John 1: In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
...... John 1: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among vs (& we beheld his glory, the glory as of the onely begotten of the Father) full of grace and trueth. www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/1611_John-Chapter-1/
According to later KJV >>>>John1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John shows that Jesus is God
Look it up in Hebrew. You can’t discern on your own because of the translation
Jesus the way the truth and life no one goes to the Father except by me,
Did you know Matthew, Luke etc do not exist? They're pen names written by some anonymous figures several hundred years after Jesus. Catholocism is the root of all christian denominations. Including orthodox christianity as the Romans tried to homogenise the faith as much as possible. Unfortunately they included pagan traditions as well, such as the Trinity, santa claus, easter etc. In order to make it easy for the pagans to convert. Like Paul said "I'm all things to all people". indeed.
the catholic church didnt make the KJV .. they made different catholic versions however..
NO part of the bible was ever touched or formed by the catholic church
all of the NT was
Martin luther snatch the bible fron catholic
Actually the Catholics canonized the WHOLE bible. There was no Hebrew/Jewish canon until AFTER the Catholic Church canonized it
What church was Martin Luther a priest in before starting the reformation? Where did the bible he inherited come from? If you can answer these questions honestly then you are on a good path to the truth
