I gotta say ... I enjoy your channel more then most sailing channels because every video is a class in sailing and the mechanics of sailing and the camera is on POV mode and not focused on you for much of the video. not that your bad looking but As a couch sailer I appreciate the lessons and ambient sounds. Thank you. Wish I could have met you when you were here in New England. Hope you make it back. Thank you both.
Yeah, who wants to look at my ugly face anyway 😆 Thank you for the kind words and I am glad we hear from guys like you that our advise is helpful! This will for sure influence our next videos!
Hey guys, 32 knots of wind is the most we had on our around the world voyage, from Palmerston to Niue. And yes, you bloody need the sails up, especially when winds are strong. Reefed in, but up 👏👏👏 Love the water rushing under the hull!
That is awesome to get that confirmation, Thank you! Yeah, we've been in 48kts TWS in the Med and it was crazy! We were doing the "4x4 rock crawling" mode where we climb the waves at 3kts and then fell off the cliff on the other side...
Randall, that is an excellent idea! We really love sailing and would often be the only boat out there with sails....have to say, we sometimes have to put the engines on to charge the batteries so, we try to time charging with moving the boat too.
@@SailingSisu In the navy in the early 70's in engineering we had a nuke program drop out. He had a ships propeller tattoed one each butt cheek and above it said 40 knots two screws and no smoke.
Beautiful sceneries, conducive environments, good surroundings even what you're doing in you daily life when on sail, all the good vibes that you could think of. Daily life in a catamaran & maintenance, etc. That would make good thumbnails.
Great video! Keep posting your very good instruction about operating the sail on a Catamaran! What would you do, if a big gust ,like 30 knots downwind and main sail is up downwind and Genoa also? No time to drop the sail.
Thank you for the kind words! Well, downwind is a complete different video! If I do suspect that we will have huge gusts, like we expected now on our way back downwind through the Thorny Path, then we do not raise the main at all, or if so, on reef 2 or reef 3. We had only the Genoa out, which we can and did, easily reef by furling it in. One saver on the downwind is that the Speed Over Ground (SOG) is deducted from the True Wind Speed (TWS) to make the Apparent Wind Speed (AWS) less. We had many gusts going up to 39kts a few days ago, but the AWS never went over 25kts, because the boat also starts to go faster as the wind picks up. Off course, it is also easy to let go of the sheet line to make the sail inefficient and reduce the exposed surface. But we normally furl the Genoa when we see a storm is overrunning us just for in case. We kind of have two settings on the Genoa...fully out and six rolls (let the sticker go around the forestay), which is reef 2.
Must adnit Ireally enjoy the sounds of sailing. Not too fussed generally about the Music used in so many Sailing Channels. Great footage. Best Wishes, Fair Winds, and Safe Travels. Bob. 👍✨️✨️✨️❤️ and 🎄🎄🎄< Christmas Trees.
Excellent vid. Love the sights and sounds you capture. Love the education you provide. Love your attitudes. Just bloody love watching you guys living the dream. (I know it’s not all roses…. hard work involved). You said underpowered…. what size are your engines? And how many blades? (Just fantasising a lotto win and spec out 😁 )
Thank you Tony for watching and gave us such awesome kindness! We have two 45hp Yanmars with three bladed MaxProps, no idea what the size are, but as big and at a pitch where the two Yanmars do 2,800rpm maxed out. On a quiet/calm day, one engine pushes us at 5kts easily at 2,200rpm. But to push a 20ton boat through 3m high sea state?
@@SailingSisu thanks for the info. Have you spoken to any 45 owners who had the larger engines? Since we are planning a lotto win then money will be no object…. :)
@@SailingSisu ah, my mistake, ta. It would be good if you could get enough “push” in a heavy seaway, but maybe that would need an unfeasibly big engine (that wouldn’t be working hard enough in normal times). If you have time, what do you think would be best/most feasible? Same as you have? Btw…. love your vids, thanks.
Tony, I would go with the sails :-) HUGE power there! Our 45hps on Sisu are just great. Get us under most circumstance up to 5kts and more with 1,800rpm each@@tonyfromaus7855
It is around 120, guess a bit smaller? Yeah, Code 0 is only good if it is a real Code 0, the one that basically covers the whole length of the boat, which is not easy on a cat with a humangus saloon in the way. We sold our Code 0 because it was not better than the Genoa, keep in mind that Genoa is on rigid forestay furler and Code 0/D on a tensioned rope, which folds easily in close reach. We absolutely love our Code D! Give us most of the time about 2kts extra in winds below 15kts.

Thank you, David! We do try various things!

I vote you do a thumbnail of the boat sailing along with a caption similar to this... SIX KNOTS WITH NO SCREWS AND NO SMOKE!!!

Oh okay.. thanks guys..
Ah! You got it! Such a champion, Trev! Thanx for supporting us even though you support hundreds of smaller channels too!

Dance, Gerhard!
Well, I hope the scaring has passed away, since the "small twin engine plane" you described is, in reality, a SINGLE engine Cessna Caravan...
😅😂 you are absolutely right! It was terrifying but now that we look back, it is a single prop engine 😆

Off topic, but what size is that Genoa you keep pointing to? Looks like 120%. Do you still believe a Code 0 is not worth it and to get a code D?
