    The scene at night...brought back memories in a campervan in Iceland. Don't think I slept for 5 days. Beyond gale force winds. Never again!

    Agreed. The Alabama Hills is an amazing landscape, and ten minutes from civilization - for better or worse. Just know that it is more often windy than calm, so plan ahead. I've been there twice based solely on having the time to go, but both times the winds were higher than I would have preferred. Since then, I've checked the weather and now I've racked up a greater number of times that I didn't go based on weather, than I have been there. Choose your trip wisely. If you roll the dice, the house (nature) will win. It's always slightly gusty even on calm days, so if you see any forecast with days below 10 mph, that's when you load up and roll.

    Had the same thing happen about a year ago in October. I met a friend at Tuttle Creek campground. He got there the night before and the weather was perfect. He slept outside on a cot. The next day I got there. The ranger came through that afternoon warning everyone there was a "Blow" coming. Weather at that time was still so great that we were skeptical. Sure enough, just about sunset the wind came up and never stopped. We tried to sleep in our vehicles. That was a very long, sleepless night. The next day was just as bad. Wound up at Micky D's in Lone Pine for breakfast before we hit the road.

    There are some nice hiding spots and away from the Graboids! Oh did you know this is where the Tremors series was filmed! Great movie museum in Lone Pine. A lot of westerns and more modern films shot in the area. We camped out there last February on our way to Death Valley. And check out the road into the mountains - you can see Mt. Whitney (hope this is right) the highest mountain in the lower 48. We unfortunately didn't get any graboids on film. The tremors were later in the spring.

    I love camping in Alabama Hills but you are right abut the wind. I bought a new camp chair with an umbrella because I was there in Mid April and the sun was intense. Got it all set up, arranged the perfect angle so I could sit tan my legs a bit and read a new book with a glass of wine. Well that lasted about 30 minutes when I got up for a refill. Next thing I knew my chair was rolling thru my campsite and my handy dandy umbrella broke...ugh!

    I was in AH last year around March and it was super cold and windy as well. The ultimate trick is to find a site situated behind some rocks in the direction the wind is coming from. That was our saving grace.

    The best time for Alabama Hills is late April and May, lots of snow on the high peaks and lush green vegetation everywhere. But most importantly, little wind and no haze!

  • @efromhb
    @efromhb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    From my first trip to Owens Valley in 1999 to now, wind or "W" has always been a consistent acquaintance. If you take the tour of Manzanar there is a recording of a female internee who states something along the lines of..."then there was the wind, always the wind." This is permanently ingrained in my synapses. Another reason I am happy sleeping in the back of my truck under the shell. No tent flapping or extraneous noises. The flippac was horrible, then the FWC which was much better but in high wind conditions but downsizing to an aluminum truck shell was where I should have started. Live and learn. W does keep the bugs at bay...so there's that.
    Sadly after so many people are getting outside the masses have discovered the Alabama Hills and regulations may be in the future. People sadly can't be responsible and clean up after themselves.

    Its hard to find a good time of the year to go there. Its either SUPER hot and windy, or SUPER cold and windy. There are a couple really awesome camp spots though, but you have to drive do a little wheeling to get there!
    While you're at bama hills, you should also take a 10 minute drive from there up to whitney portal to see some epic trees and waterfalls. Love your channel. Im sure we will run into you guys at some point on the road soon!

    I know you two didn't have the best time, but I wanted to thank you for sharing the trip anyways. Been a subscriber for a bit, but really enjoyed the voice overs and everything else. The wife and I are going through a bit of a low spot right now, just with covid, little friends and family interactions and this really hit me in a way that reminds me how easy it would be for us to get out and about, just the two of us. Though, we know how miserable a windy night in the RTT can be, ugh! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures and keeping the stoke alive for getting out and about with the person you love.

    Haha I had a similar experience only a few months ago when we went camping. We had to canoe to our site. It was fine getting there, but the next day it was raining HARD and it went on for exactly 24hrs. On top of that, we had to canoe out into mainland in huge waves with our camera gear. It was so hard and scary. Having rocks on the shore didn't help. Took us nearly an hour just to get into the canoe and out.
    Later that night, we experienced 60km/h winds. Turned out that there was a tornado warning just outside our area :) that was a joy to hear
