You can also add up the entire lot, take the total ounces and multiply it by .90

Today with our ,999 coinage the Junk method will not work.
A currency must be uniform and have equal divisible units,
Junk would have worked during your Great Grandma's day.
Over 50% of Junk has been remelted.
There is not enough to float our currency system.

      1 Ounce = 1.097 Troy

.999 US coinage is now sufficient enough to meet
our currency needs. The common person will see
JUNK as our ordinary clad coinage. It will get mixed
into our current clad coins. We can not have 2 currency
systems. A currency system must have equal divisible
units. Junk fails this requirement. Junk silver would
have worked as money during your great Grandma's day.
House Resolution states that that only ,999 purity will
be used as a PM currency, For junk to be used it will have
to be remelted thru a PM dealer at a hefty fee. Did you
really save money buying junk. A PM dealer will not
disclose what I have explained. THEY SEEK PROFIT ONLY.

You could also take the total face value and divide by 1.40 and that would give you the weight in oz's of silver.

Yep, when buying non-numismatic constitutional silver avoid mercs and standing liberty quarters. Lovely design, but almost always less weight. Of all the designs, mercs are my favorite, but I still stack rosies because I get more weight at about half the premium. I think more and more people are catching onto this because rolls of Roosevelt dime rolls always seem to be sold out on my favorite place to buy. That never used to be the case.

I once weighed a whole bunch of silver quarters, mostly washington's that showed very little wear, basically all XF-Unc, and it was interesting to see that the theoretical weight of 6.25 grams varied consistently about + or - 3% or so. Even unc pieces might weigh 6.10 grams and a piece with wear maybe 6.4 grams. Let's just say that the 6.25 gram weight was a target, but the planchets are not exact. This is not a problem when silver is $1.29 per ounce, but it will be at $75 per ounce, and eventually all junk trading will probably have to trade on a weight basis, not a face multiplier.

Another thing about 64 Kennedy’s. People knew that that was the last year they were going to be silver so they stacked them. everybody stacked them pulled them directly out of circulation and kept them. so even though that coin is 55 years old, it didn’t see much circulation at all. most of them didn’t.
They’re also usually the cheapest silver half you can pick up nowadays.

No, silver dimes, quarters, halves are calibrated exactly the same against their face, about .715 per $1 face value; Silver Dollars are at about .77 each, so they are slightly heavier per $1. Halves often bring a slight premium to dimes & quarters, just because they are more popular.

Maybe I’m having a brain fart, But can’t you just take whatever weight you have in ounces and multiplied by .9 and find out how much silver you have? What am I missing?

I Just brought myself 390 grams of 0.500% AUSTRALIAN JUNK SILVER!!! woohoo😀. Fun fact our junk silver is in pre decimal and really hard stuff to get because it's quite collectable n lots of it is graded so I got lucky. The 92.5% coins are way harder to get, more expensive and heavily graded even a lot of the low grade stuff is graded which sucks. Non graded 92.5% coins are around $43-$60 AUD an troy (ex shipping) so that's about $30-$42 USD. To over hyped n hoarded but I had to get some so I paid $158.50 AUD for the 0.500% coins so thats $4.28 AUD over spot (per troy oz) or $2.99 USD over spot and that's the low grade stuff.

That would be correct if copper and silver have the same weight by volume. Is that true?

    • @SilverHeist
      @SilverHeist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

MJ, Good point but possibly irrelevant, because my assumption is the “90%” in the “90% constitutional” means 90% silver by weight - not 90% silver by volume. Pretty sure it is by weight.

Dayum...just set the scale to measure in "Trot Ounces"" instead of "Grams"! Otherwise, just divide the weight in grams by 31.1. Really, how hard is that?

you made this more complicated and confusing than it ought to be. What does it mean when a coin store says they’ll give you 12X face or is it 12X/dollar.Then how much is that under spot price? Is it per ounce or per dollar??? You explained nothing about the language of coin shops to know what I’m getting or giving!

Why waste the time weighing it, every dollar is .715 ounces every ten dollars is 7.15 oz. Every 100 dollars is 71.5 oz and every 1000 dollars is 715 oz. , its easier to figure it this way and with the worn condition of the coins it's more profitable. The only reason you should weigh it is if you are going to refine it but you lose money if you do that.

@@SilverDragons47 when I started buy silver it was only a $1.15 for a dollar face value and i was still getting it out of change on a weekly basis. And when eagles came out the dealers would sell a roll for 90 dollars so I had an early start, but there are still opportunities if you leave no stone unturned and get creative.
