I'm late by like 2 years, but idea that plays into the horrific nature of the world. You use the Car Hub as a place to rest, and invite survivors to. Invited survivors give you different shops, items to buy, people to help you, etc. But as a story event, you defeat some sort of creature that is lurking nearby, and it tunnels away. When you return to the car park, it's dead silent, full of fog, strange noises, falling cars, and the same beast... standing over torn down shops, snuffed out campfires, and corpses of all the friends you invited here. It only becomes safe again when you defeat it. But you can no longer invite survivors there.
Great video! As others have already pointed out, you could "recycle" the location and turn it into cozy hub after some boss battle or story event Can't wait for the next vid and that backflip!
Or have it start as a hub, then after a certain event happens, a boss wipes out the hub and invades the place. Then there could be a quest to find all the survivors that ran away, kill the boss to turn it back another a new hub.
Ohhh Myyy God bruh subscribed not even 1:30 in and i just randomly came across this video while watching random devlogs. Everything from the intro, animation, art, humor, and fire editing is insane and i've not seen anyone in gamedev come close to such densely packed quality content; it's even rare on yt in general. Literally have my Tv paused at 1:29 typing this on my laptop and as someone who loves the practicality and expertise of creation in all forms I've got to say this is already a W video. Well Done bro
Fun fact that no one asked for: in mathematics a fractal can have a dimension of 2.5. Intuitively it means that it is too detailed to be a flat thing but too flat to be 3-dimensional (it fils up space more effectively than a 2-dimensional thing, but not quite as well as a 3-dimensional thing).
8:30 - Wow! Looks incredible Thijs! 😱 I can imagine you having this crazy idea one night in bed to make it 2.5D, and so seeing it now must be quite a feeling of relief! 😜 Definitely a unique style which could help make Incaved stand out! Great work and insane devlog as always! (I know I’ve mentioned this before… but your electro-swing styles is just… *chef’s kiss*! 🎶🎷)
You should make it were it starts off as a place for survivor with people to buy stuff from and get quest then there should be a main quest there And after you do the quest something happens and a boss battle happens you could even put people running and hiding behinds cars as you fight the boss after that you can make it a spot that is like a safe zone to talk to npc and take a break
Why not use the car camp for BOTH? It could be a hub but a triggering event could drive people out, drop the lights down lower, then start a boss fight. It’s like when you come home in the middle of the night and the house is totally different, safe and comforting becomes sinister and spooky.
I love the area as an ominous place. The eerie lights in the darkness from the wreckage of cars is really unnerving. This could still be a safe zone, but perhaps one the PC has to find somewhere in the game, and he needs to walk past the cars first not knowing if friend or foe lies ahead :)
You could make it a camp where you can customise the area around you to give you in game advantages like items and boosts when acquiring them, so you could build a shack for someone and the reward you or you could help build a shop that allows you to buy items from the person but you can do extra quests to unlock discount and special items to pop up in the shop.
That sounds really sick! I've mentioned this before in another devlog, but I really love when games allow you to expand the hub, taking in people who need it, helping out by providing shelter and stuff (man I talk a lot about my love for hubs in these lol)
wtf is this. i realy thought. how did i miss this youtuber. the editing is so great. i though he would be at 1 million subscribers at least and then. Boom under 10.000 subs. No way.
I did not expect to see Rob but I am absolutely here for it :D 23D 😎 8:29 that looks so good!!! I think with all the lighting improvements by adding in the 3D elements it's going to make things look even better. Stinks that the physics systems are different so you gotta redo stuff but it looks like it will be worth it. Can't wait to see some hub worlds, great stuff Thijs!! Also yeah the capsule collider is annoying xD
Let's gooooo thanks Garret! Yeah I thought of who to ask for the cameo and Rob was just the perfect fit haha. Yeah the capsule colliders are just... Why?!
This is such a great visual upgrade; I'll be honest, you went from something that I would probably overlook to something that I'll wishlist on steam. Good work!
Gamedev is hard :/ , but on the end of the day is worth it! 8:44 that looks Awesome ! You spend good 2+ hours editing this video right? That's why I stopped with Devlogs but atleast you have the views but if you spend 2-3 hours editing and then get 50 views that's a pain, flip table... :D
Haha thank you so much! I guess 40-50 hours is indeed technically 2+ hours, so you're right lol Don't stress too much about your views though, I didn't get this amount of views for my first like 20 videos lol, and all of them definitely took more than 2 hours to edit haha (excluding writing a script, audio editing, creating a thumbnail, etc.) Just keep at it mate
Absolutely love the vision for this game! The time you’ve poured into the art design shows. It feels like a vivid, lived-in world, even though it’s .5 dimensions short of reality. This project has so much potential and so much substance already. I am excited for you to keep developing the story and mechanics and seeing how they inspire one another further. It’s impressive and exciting that you have the technical creation under control while also executing the art direction so well. Keep up the great work! You’ve got my Kickstarter money.
Holy crap, thank you so much! You've completely made my day with this comment, super happy to read your enthousiasm! Trust me, the technical creation could be a bit better haha, though I'll continue improving that aspect constantly :) Thank you ❤️

probably super late on this lol but for the car area, u could make it an opening boss state/ominous area that becomes the hub after you clear out whatever's preventing it from becoming a safe spot to stay
Wow! This was not what I expected at all but it really helps with the atmosphere and I think it reminds me of a game that never came out called The Last Night. Honestly your videos are simultaneously really funny and entertaining and also really interesting. One thing I could recommend though would be to make the cars in the background a little bit brighter because I could honestly barely see the beautiful art you did.
Thank you so much! That's one of the best comments I could get, since that's exactly what I'm going for witg my videos: entertaining, but at the end you also might have learned something. Now that you mention it, yeah, why aren't the cars more rusty? Lol, it should be pretty moist down there, probably going to add more rust spots here and there haha
Fantastic work as always Thijs! The extra dimension adds a lot more to the aesthetic of the world then I initially thought it would but WOW does it add a lot - Still curious how they got all of those cars in a cave tho :O As for your query with whether or not to use it as a home base or a boss fight - Why not start it off a lot smaller and your first main quest of the game (or an optional quest) is to go clear out a larger one from bandits which stole it from your tribe and then you have a boss fight there! @DualWielded Yesssssss 👀 Looking forward to hearing it! I like to think I have some good ideas, feel free to message me to bounce design stuff if you want 👉😳👈 (Trying to improve my design skills) Rob is to be destroyed 😤
Really liking the 2.5D of the game. Those cars hanging at the background looks super kool. You could allow the player to upgrade the hub world. Like at the beginning it will be nothing or too dark but slowly the player will be able to upgrade it by either progressing through the game or by just finding materials/money and using that. Anyway awesome game as always. Keep it up! :)
Thank you! Yeah, I've said this in a previous episode somewhere I think, but I absolutely love it when you can upgrade the hub in some point (like in Dark Souls where you can free NPC's in the game's world so they'll go to the hub, or in Ori where you can find collectibles that allow you to buy more houses in the hub). So yeah, I'd really like to implement such a system as well :)
So you are remaking your entire game just to have bumpy ground? That sounds like A BRILLIANT IDEA! But I must agree with Rob here, it would be even better if it was 3D! So 3D Incaved?
Aaah, I think I get what you mean. So by creating a shader that gives the texture a bumpy offset using noise? That could be really neat for randomness, I might actually do that, thanks!
its looking really good now. idea for the cars is you could have it be a biome/zone with a camp but you still get to explore the car wrecks. could also have bandits that have car type armor, or weird mutants that use the car stuff as armor.
Ooh, I like the idea for enemies using car parts for combat as well. Can't believe I haven't thought about that yet. Something like a car door shield would be sick!
Looks amazing! Also love the devlog Some suggestions (if you're not already planning these) Normal mapped pixel art - I think it really helps with 3D lights to make the 2D assets really pop Randomize lighting, the flickering car light looks awesome, not that fire has gotta be moving! Randomize the intensity and position of the light a bit and it's gonna look amazing
Just an idea! You could very easily have two sets of what seem to be headlights in the background that move away when you get too close, like there was a creature among the cars, foreshadowing some later boss or something. I think Ori & The Will of The Wisps introduced bosses like this pretty early on when entering a new region, so maybe this area could be a checkpoint of sorts, and a fast travel point bookmarking the start of a new region and section of your journey? Not sure if fast travel is in your plans, but the rest could still be applicable. But, yeah, it's definitely cosy with those warm reds and oranges, but it's also very dark, and the lights sort of look like eyes. It gives me this vibe of being _just_ barely safe enough for now, but somewhere you can't quite let your guard down. It's walking a very fine line tonally, and that's really hard to do, plus, in a general sense it's a very quirky and charming idea. So great work! Since the game is generally very dark and moody, maybe this relative safety with just a tinge of unease is actually perfect for a hub area, but personally, like I said, I find the headlights oddly threatening! Especially after the camp has been decimated, leaving it empty. Whatever you decide, you're making something pretty special I reckon :D
Thank you so much for this comment, Zed! I definitely agree with Ori's introduction to bosses being really a great way to add suspense and weight to a boss as well as the area that comes before them. I'm still figuring out how I'm exactly planning to combine roguelike level generation with story progression, but I think checkpoints could work really well for that, also as a nice way to show visual progression to the player. Thank you for your ideas and feedback mate, really appreciate it!
Both! You could get the player used to it being a hub and then turn it into a quiet unnerving place for some kind of boss battle or weird cut scene/fight like hollow knight did with that one bench
I think u should probably make the cars look a little more rusty just so it make more sense in this apocalyptic world. Also your game is already looking great, can’t wait for future updates!
I may be late, But I think that car area would work super well as a hub, that you come back to later, find all the npcs dead, and then you have to fight a boss who is the culprit who killed them
I think the car area would be cool as a hub but later in the games story you should make it so that it gets attacked and looks really ominous as you search through it to see what happened
Fun fact, you can have half of a dimension! An object's Hausdorff dimensionality can range from being 0th-dimensional, such as with a point, to being any (real) finite dimensionality. This includes objects with fractional dimensionality, such as the 3D quadratic Koch surface (type 2), which has a Hausdorff dimensionality of 2.5, as well as many other fractals. This means that an object _can_ have 2.5 dimensions.
It's really cool how making the world in 3D can really change the look of the game. I really like how all the car lights make the world look however those car batteries would have died ages ago 😂
Yeah, it's such a completely different tone, I'm really happy with the result. I mean, yeah of course they would have haha, but maybe I'm an amazing environmental story teller and thought of a great way to explain this already. Or not. Those are the two options.
The area should be explorable and there are hints the people were wiped out by something, y'know for the lore, and after exploring you find the boss. But after defeating it, you turn into a safe zone. Finding a survivor there would be cool as well, and their specialty could be randomized. I also think the boss should be a mutant bear. 😂 Sorry for throwing so many ideas at you but I hope you like them.
I don't know if you are still working on the game but with the abandoned car park I think it would work great as a calm hub and later you can come into another more broken down and abandoned car park with no more small town and instead there's a large mutant boss that you get to fight I love the game so far and I hope you are still having fun developing it.

Yea, with darker lighting for the bossfight and then more lit up when it's the hub
That sounds like a pretty cool idea 👀
0:50 I have a feeling that only two of those examples were lies

I think the car area would be cool as a hub but later in the games story you should make it so that it gets attacked and looks really ominous as you search through it to see what happened
I love this sm
Amazing editng man! Funny video!
Interesting idea to add some 2.5D spicy-ness to the game, awesome work on the edition as usual
This means that an object _can_ have 2.5 dimensions.
i love the loud intros their so funny and the rest of the video but especially the intro
This is brilliant!!
I think it should be a boss fight in the car wreckage but once you defeat the boss it becomes a safe zone for the player
Oh nice
LET'S GOOOOO
I rrly want ur incaved game like swordigo with a storyline and rlly cant wait
Something tells me there might be a 3D Incaved in our future. I got this weird feeling.
Ayo sickkkk
Love the intro
I don't know if you are still working on the game but with the abandoned car park I think it would work great as a calm hub and later you can come into another more broken down and abandoned car park with no more small town and instead there's a large mutant boss that you get to fight I love the game so far and I hope you are still having fun developing it.
ah man this is pretty Poggms i really like it a lot more than the old one.... the intro i mean, i guess the 2.5d also looks kinda cool
so like uhm... no head?
and yes you should make it 3d lol
