    Says they are herbivores and eat vegetable matter but they are actually detritivores and eat rotten wood, leaves, and plant matter as 90% of their diet. Their substrate is the most important part of keeping millipedes and feeding vegetables should be kept to once a week. Also infusing their substrate with calcium and adding a cuttle bone is super important as they need calcium to grow their exoskeleton

    Just want to make a point on this, though the largest may be found in tropical areas, any creature can grow much larger from a good environment. Case in point, I discovered a rather large milipede myself several years back in NYS around what is the Sacandaga lake. Heavily wooded area, it was just about the size of your typical garter snake, though only 3-5 inches long.

    An ideal enclosure mate for millipedes is most likely Isopods and certain vegan species of Woodland beetles.

    • @swayback7375
      @swayback7375 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Millys and isopods share the same niche, they can survive together just fine but the number of one will limit the number of the other. Since isopods breed so fast I think they usually win that competition if all things are equal

    I've always loved bugs of all kinds and since starting work at a place that sells pet bugs (mostly tarantulas, but I'm not ready for one of those yet lol), I've already caved and bought a mantis which I think has sparked something of an addiction.

    The intro that showed the Mantis eating, is why I am soo thankful that they don't eat humans. They don't kill their prey, they just start casually eating away at them, bit by bit. Plus, if they ate humans, we would have "Stop Sign Mantis" and "Policeman Mantis" and anything else that would cause a human to get near it and stop moving, so it could grab us and eat us.

    In Tennessee there's giant skinks and a small yellow salamander that no one knows about and a giant pink skink that no one knows about. I've looked up skinks of Tennessee. Can't find skink nor salamander

    • @swayback7375
      @swayback7375 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not 2 lined or 3 lined salamanders?
      You gotta get pics, I’d guess you saw color morph mutations, or just didn’t see it well and your imagination filled in the blanks, no offense but it happens ALL THE TIME, but there’s loads of undiscovered or unnamed species out there, most species are in fact unnamed, but 90% of life is microscopic… it’s not common to find an undiscovered species of vertebrate in the US…
      Of course evolution is a thing! I see no reason for new species to evolve

    • @swayback7375
      @swayback7375 ปีที่แล้ว

      What did they look like?
      Was it like a blue tail or 5 line skink but pink all over or was it bigger and slower?
      What about the salamander?
      There’s several different groups of salamanders they come in many sizes shapes and colors, many are very bright! You might be surprised at the amount of salamanders species, subspecies and varieties that you can have in TN, I’m in KY myself and we have soooo many… the University of Kentucky website lists many species yet there are several we have that aren’t listed too, or occur in different color phases.
      Actually I wonder if you might have seen a yellow phase red eft (eastern newt) rather than a salamander, who knows, speculation…
      Oh yea… invasive species too… we have tons of them as well

      I work in a place that sells pet bugs and we have huge enclosures full of millipedes and the most noise they make is really light tapping, but thats only if they've been disturbed and are trying to climb up the sides. Most species are nocturnal too, so you won't hear them in the day. If you're looking for a completely silent pet bug though, mantids are a good option if you don't mind feeding them live food.

      Tamás Horváth sorry, I made a mistake, was looking at a different thumbnail. Centrobolus is nice and round species of red milipede. The one on the thumbnail of this video looks something like orthomorpha? Similar to polydesmus... but this needs a confirmation of another biologist, I myself am a herpetologist so not an expert on this particular group.

      Some have cyanide defense, bad stuff but not deadly to an adult, you’d likely puke it up if you ate it, it sucks to get it in your eyes nose mouth etc but it smells like almonds, stains you bright yellow, so just pay attention and wash hands and you’ll be fine.
