  • Have you ever wondered why people hate Starfox Adventures? Well then this is the video for you. It is the most divisive game in the Starfox franchise and for good reason. With its lack of proper Arwing sections, shoe horned in Star Fox elements and simple combat, its a game that was never truly loved by Star Fox fans. It wasn't the sequel to Star Fox 64 that everyone wanted and for that it was hated.

When I played this game as a kid I didn't view it as a star fox game, but rather an adventure game as the title suggests. And as a huge Zelda fan and adventure games, it was right up my alley. I played Star Fox 64 before it and I still had fond memories with Adventures. I wasn't looking for it to have huge amounts of star wing sections, the adventure was all it needed. I'd say it succeeded at being an adventure game. But yeah the combat does suck and so does Tricky.

One thing fans don't realize is Fox's lore isn't just Arwing based, the only reason he got the Arwing was bcuz he needed it in the Lylat Wars which obviously ended and Fox had to move on...before the war Fox lived on Papetoon fighting thugs in close combat and using his gun and stole money to give to the poor, STA was a true Star Fox game that stuck to the Mercenary core...take a mission, fly to the planet and get the job done

Star Fox adventure was my first star fox game as a kid, and I honestly loved it. So much fun, amazing music and story. It was a shock to me when I found people disliked it in the JonTron video. Honestly, and I say this as a big fan of JonTron, that video was among his absolute worst. "Stairfax Termperatures" was little more than a poorly researched hit piece in which he mercilessly tears into every last aspect of the game, including the character models, for not being just like the "perfect" Star Fox 64, treats it as the start of Rare's downfall, and blames it for the franchise effectively dying while ignoring that two more Star Fox games came out after it. And the video was made all the shittier by how it seemingly influenced the internet's opinion of a once-loved game in much the same way Arin Hanson would later get people retroactively hating Twilight Princess, Symphony of the Night and literally every Sonic game.

The game should have stayed as Dinosaur Planet, as we would have gotten a bigger, more focused, and overall better adventure game. • @Fuchsfein
    @Fuchsfein 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The problem with Star Fox Adventures was the move to Gamecube. It caused the developers some unexpected headaches because the seamless level loading system used on the cartridge based N64 did not transfer well to the disc based Gamecube at all. Debugging Tricky, the AI controlled dinosaur sidekick was also a nightmare from what I read.
Resolving these issues took up a lot of the dev time. This along with the upcoming transfer to Microsoft meant that development had to be rushed near the end to get the game working and out the door in time.
That's the reason Krystal as a playable protagonist was (mostly) scrapped and several areas, key plot points and gameplay elements from Dinosaur Planet didn't make the cut. And why we see so many explosive barrel puzzles as filler material to pad out the game's length.
It's still an enjoyable game and features fantastic graphics for its time, but it could've been more if development hadn't run into these issues. Many of Dinosaur Planet's whimsical characters and the beautiful soundtrack by David Wise are still intact.
I think a lot of the criticism surrounding SFA came from Star Fox fans who expected a space shooter, a worthy sequel to Star Fox 64, and got something completely different instead. The game would've been received more warmly for what it is had it stayed as its own IP.

You mentioned Andross and General Scales, and I thought it might be worth sharing that the Dinosaur Planet ROM leak re-contextualized some things about both games. General Scales has always been intended to act as the game’s red herring; the twist that there was an even bigger, even badder villain behind Scales has always been the intent. Before Andross, it was Drakor and the moral ambiguity of the Krazoa.
I just mean to say that a lot of people wag their finger at Nintendo for, per your words, “shoehorning” Star Fox into Dinosaur Planet and while there is truth to that sentiment, I think it’s also worth acknowledging that Dinosaur Planet, unburdened by Star Fox, still had some fundamental story weaknesses that make it easier for those who don’t know better to point the finger at Star Fox, and Nintendo.
All that said, I genuinely love Adventures. I have such peaceful nostalgia of playing that game and while it’s by no means a perfect Star Fox game, I still really enjoy it for what it is, and for the memories it has provided me. Thank you for being objective but fair with this game... It’s really rare (heh) to see someone not completely dismiss this game.

Funny thing though, Scales was intended to actually be fought, not just immediately die. It has one of the few game worlds with a furry protagonist with which you can enjoy wandering around and progressing at your own pace, because of how good the atmosphere of the environments are thanks to the visual design and music. Why does everyone keep saying Nintendo forced Rare to make Dinosaur Planet a Starfox game? Nintendo couldn't force Rare to do anything they didn't want to. Nintendo was a minority share holder in Rare and the Stamper brothers were the majority (Stampers 51%, Nintendo 49% if I remember correctly). In fact it was agreed upon that Dinosaur Planet should stay on a Nintendo platform because half of the Rare staff were concerned what Microsoft would do to the game during the buyout. The best way to make the game stay with Nintendo was to add in their IPs. The game developers said this in interviews. I believe it was Phil Tossell that said most of the decision making was that of Rare, Nintendo pretty much left them alone and only checked in on them from time to time.

Actually, at this point, I'd say Star Fox Zero takes the crown from Adventures in being the most divisive title. Because that one is a *THIRD* remake of the first game (after Star Fox 64 and Star Fox 64 3D) and has a noticeable drop in quality compared to the previous titles.
Star Fox Adventures, at least everyone agrees, is a game in the classic mold of N64-era Rareware titles with that patented Rareware charm and quality and a solid Zelda-clone format, a genre that historically was pretty sparse (with the only other notable ones before Star Fox Adventures being Golden Axe Warrior on the Master System, Crusader of Centy, Landstalker, and Beyond Oasis on the Genesis, and Alundra on the PlayStation).
I noticed you forgot the energy shield ability Krystal's Staff has, that adds at least one more combat action to Star Fox Adventures.

BUT, I want a future game to pick back up where Assault left off (I dont consider Command being canon) in the canon timeline and focus more on the mercenary aspect of the team. You pick and choose what jobs you wish to take on as you go. Have the ability to level up your wingmen to make them more competent and deal more damage, customize your Arwing, and maybe add in some Mass Effect tier story telling too. We need to see more of Fox and Krystal's romance, we need to see more of Falco's sarcastic personality. We need to see the nerd side of Slippy doing work in the backgroud. We just need a good Starfox game in general to replace Command with how awful that was.

It's worth noting that when Rare was developing this game, it's NOT that Nintendo came in and said "This is a Star Fox game now", so much as Rare was in the process of being bought by Microsoft, and needed to finish the game before that completed. It was simply, and unfortunately, easier and cheaper to cut down the scope (only 1 playable character) and stuff Star Fox story into all the gaps that weren't already written than it was to actually finish the game as "Dinosaur Planet".

If anything, it seems to be considered one of the stronger games in the series, especially when compared to the games that followed Assault (Command, Zero, etc.). The forced gimmicks of the Nintendo DS and Wii U hardware, in tandem with Zero's focus on retreading the same ground already broken by Star Fox 64, seems to be what has led to the IP's dormant state that is currently ongoing.

Despite the game’s various problems I still really enjoy it. I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. In fact it was my first Star Fox game (Although, Assault is my favorite. Let’s hope those rumors about Nameco remaking Assault and/or other GameCube games is actually real. They’d be able to improve the graphics, controls, and other things while keeping the original game intact. I’d hope they’d also add online multiplayer, more playable characters, and new maps to the multiplayer. Something else I’d love to see but doubt would happen would be for them to add in some side missions with Katt, Bill, and maybe the few good characters added in Command showing Corneria fall to the Aparoids, having that fleet get decimated before it goes home, and some of the other battles. They could also have a few missions from the perspective of Star Wolf showing how they escaped, and other things they were up to). Admittedly, the Arwing sections weren’t good, the lore doesn’t fit like at all, and the game was rushed. But, like I already said I’m able to look past these flaws and judge it as it’s own thing (I do the same for Doom 3, and oddly enough I actually prefer that version over the normal Doom).
Too bad the Microsoft buyout combined with Mini Munchkin forcing Rare to make it a Star Fox game robbed us of the masterpiece that was Dinosaur Planet. Thankfully the build leaked last year and people have been turning this borderline unplayable buggy mess that crashes all the time into something that approaches Rare’s original vision. Hopefully they’ll be able to get in contact with some of the old talent to figure out how certain cut sections were supposed to play out and make replacement assets from broken stuff. I’ll be sure to play it once it’s near completion.
I really liked how you brought up Okami. That’s definitely one of my favorite games. Too bad they haven’t made an Okami 2 (yes, I’m aware of the ds game, and I really liked that one. I just want a proper next gen sequel).
Something that’s really cool is there’s this guy called Esphirian who’s making a reimagining of Adventures. It’s going to be like BOTW where you can do the objectives in any order you want. Krystal will be along for the journey with the ability to swap characters to deal with puzzles and enemies that require Fox and Krystal’s different abilities, as well as having her relationship with Fox develop throughout the game. Andross is dead and it’s just a military alliance between Scales and the Venomian remnants. The Great Fox and it’s crew will have a much larger role in the story. And we’ll learn more about Krystal’s origins and connection to the Krazoa. So far there’s only been 3 trailers and a dev log. Unfortunately he hasn’t released any demos/playable builds because it’s nowhere near complete, and he doesn’t want Nintendo to strike it. Videos: th-cam.com/video/JGEGPeO_RX0/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/4WJeCsYPlHc/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/tiuC9EU3tyE/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/5eHLRyUysaQ/w-d-xo.html.
There’s also this other fan game called Star Fox Event Horizon being made by UndyingNephalim. It’s a reimagining of the 64 continuity that uses elements/characters from all three timelines/reboots. It’s a mod for Freespace Open so it’s completely free. Unfortunately the engine doesn’t allow for on rails sections or jumping in and out of vehicles like in Assault. Luckily the gameplay is really fun and he somehow got ground vehicles in an engine meant only for space combat. The madman even got in contact with Estelle Ellis Krystal’s original voice actress and she’s going to do voice work for his mod. She narrated this trailer that has the newest build in the description (th-cam.com/video/gP_eJomGGUw/w-d-xo.html). Check both of them out.

The Star Fox branding really didn't seem to hurt the game nearly as much as the switch to development on the GameCube did. In the leaked prototype of Dinosaur Planet, a build sometime between the decision to make it a Star Fox game and development for the GameCube, the game is very, very similar to the final product. The narrative hints at a much more expansive world than what we ultimately got, with more temples and guardians, though the build is unfinished and breaks down around the Desert Force Point Temple that never made it into the final game alongside the desert itself, the Golden Plains. The overall story, however, seems to be more or less the same, just without the Star Fox elements. It wouldn't take much rewriting to make the game work with Star Fox as is. It seems as though the bulk of the remaining dev time was spent reworking the game for its new home on the GameCube rather than including the Star Fox branding.
I think if the game had been able to maintain its original course on the N64, we would've gotten a project that included Fox and Crystal in more equal parts like we see in the prototype, and a much more expansive world. But since the majority of the game had to be remade more or less, the devs didn't have time to finish the world they originally had planned, so they just took what they had and meshed it all together so that it was just Fox's adventure and reduced Krystal to a damsel in distress.
That said, using the Star Fox branding was certainly a pretty big misstep among Star Fox fans who had been waiting since Star Fox 64 for a new game and had high hopes for the latest entry on the GameCube. But it most certainly would not have sold half as well as an original IP releasing so late into the N64's life. I think it was ultimately a necessary evil to allow the game to be released rather than cancelled. But still, I would really love to see a day where Dinosaur Planet got to see a full release in its original glory.

This is honestly one of the most beautiful GameCube games (which is impressive given how it was released only a year after the console's release) but playing it, I could tell it was rushed out by rare before they had to jump ship to Microsoft. It lacks polish in several areas. I think it would have been better if they kept it strictly as Dinosaur Planet from the beginning and having both Krystal and Sabre playable with the swapstones.

May be an unpopular opinion, but Starfox Adventures was honestly my favorite entry into the series. Assault was fun too but was a bit clunky. The original formula is too boring for me, and being a Zelda fan, it was a welcome change for me. Some preferred it to stick to the arcadic gameplay, and thats okay. But I don't think its realistic because Starfox was trying to evolve as the technology did. I loved the adventurous feel of SA, but also, Rare really did have a great story despite them having to swap in the Starfox IP. I loved the characters and getting a glimpse into the world a bit more.

Oh sure, I DEFINITELY agree with the sentiment that because the “formula” of this game is different from most Starfox games, it’s a “bad game”. No consideration was taken to account for the fact that 64, Assault, and Adventures had on-foot combat sections (Starfox 2 and Zero’s Arwalker was similar to this too), or the fact that the boss fights of this game are gargantuan in scale like most Starfox games. Also, Bill gates of Microsoft is responsible for the “incompleteness” of this game due to him shorting Rare and crunching their employees to rush the game (it’s a fact, you can look it up), NOT Shigeru Miyamoto’s decision to turn Saber into Fox. In Addition, you forgot to mention the Staff’s shield ability, Tricky’s flame command (which can also be used in combat), and the many cut beta abilities (like the rapid-blaster, the grenade, and the sledgehammer), the freeze blast, the Sharpclaw disguise, the rocket boost, and the portal spell to name a few. While the game doesn’t require you to use the different attack moves (the staff spin, front flip, and kick), you gradually learn them and they add a nice “flavor” to beating the Sharpclaws. In my not-so-humble opinion, the on-foot sections of this game are better than the Arwing sections because you get to learn more about the character of Fox McCloud and see how he can save the day without a vehicle. Falco was going to help Fox beat General Scales’ armada in the Walled City, but that got cut, in addition to Fox saving Krystal from Galdon in Dark Ice Mines early-on, and she was going to be FULLY playable 50% of the game. I wish Nintendo would make the rest of characters playable on-foot in a future Starfox game, but it looks like we won’t be getting that any time soon. This game did not “ruin star fox” but is instead the greatest Starfox game of all time. It just didn’t get to see its fullest potential come to fruition (possibly the greatest GAME of all time) and that’s sad.

General Scales needed a proper boss fight. Talk about an anticlimax to a somewhat great villain.
It's nice when star fox has different villains.
I am bored of Andros coming back for more pretty much every single game.
It's more of an adventure game

I thought of a way that they could’ve made the rwing parts of the game more interesting such as you have to take down a Space boss so that you can make it to the fragment of the planet they would be secretly under order of Andros to stop star fox and his friends from getting to the fragment of dinosaur plant and getting in the way of his partnership with general scales. And another part of the game I thought about adding was a dream sequence inside of Krystal‘s head where you can play as her she would go on a scavenger hunt finding equipment to help her rescuer such as laser upgrades for fox's rwing and information using the staff for different combat abilities. Then in the end you would fight general scales and would have to go up into space and defeat Andros as well making the game longer and increasing the Rwing part of the game.

People are blinded by nostalgia for Star Fox 64 and get mad whenever Nintendo tries to do remotely anything different with the series, which is why the last two Star Fox games were a 64 remake (3D) and a 64 re-imagining (Zero).
In all honesty, Adventures and Assault were the best Star Fox games as they tried to advance the series forward rather than rehash the same things we’ve seen before.
As for Command, the terrible controls sabotaged what could’ve been a good game.

I can recall many set pieces from many Zelda games (some I played even before Star Fox Adventures), but I can't remember anything about the dungeons you traverse in Star Fox Adventures. To be fair, I'm sure the game was rushed once Nintendo decided to have Rare move it from the N64 to GameCube, so things had to be cut out. What annoyed me most about this game is that you never get a chance to fight General Scales. Also, Andross should have never been in this game. It would have made more sense to have both Krystal and Fox has playable characters that team up together in a final fight against General Scale. General Scales should have been the final boss fight in the game.
That shoe horned in final fight with Andross is why I never went back to replay this game again. This game does a terrible job explaining Krystal's backstory of anything about her. She's just a love interest for Fox to be motivated to save her in this game 🙄. It would have been better if they actually was forced to team up together and then by the end of the game that Krystal and Fox ended up liking each other.

I know this vid is about 1 year old, but I think (still watching this) the reason people don't like the "newer" starfox games is just the nostalgia glasses. Yes, the old starfox games were cool but I do have to admit, after recently playing them, I felt "meh" as an adult. Some sections are cool (the train level for instance, or heck even the indepence day dogfight are still awesome!), yet it lacks something... that finesse of feeling an accomplishment. I remember I had to struggle through a lot of levels just to get the medals or survive on the harder routes, whilst as an adult, this just felt as an easy breeze. I think the older starfox games legit suffer from nostalgia glasses. Kids nowadays playing the newer starfox games might enjoy them! For sure, but people who played the older games can't find that joy again, not because of a revamp or a new title... No, the old starfox games, with the same formula, just don't appease to the more mature gamers out there. Side scrolling missions where a new invention back in the day, but with todays standards, it's slow, it's easy, it's not as engaging... as an adult. It's not the game's franchise or this sort of game's fault, it's the harsh truth that kids become adults. What was a gaming challenge back in the day is just casual play nowadays I'm afraid... So yeah, on the bright side, it just shows how as kids some games are gems, we've had our gems and can still enjoy gaming. The newer generation will find their gems on their way :) just keep on gaming gamers

I think it goew beyond that, as someone who isn't familiar with the Starfox franchise I thought this game was going to be enjoyable but it just wasn't.
Poorly phased world exploration and extremely linear.
Having very long hallways to connect difrerent areas making backtracking a lot more annoying than it had to.
Puzzles that are confusing and poorly explained (probably because the game was rushed)
A very, very slow character with little means to teleport at will to the different areas of the main planet (you woukd think he will use the arwing but nope) making it unnecesarily tedious, and it's weird because OoT and MM shpuld have shown how inmediate teleportation to save time was extremely important for those games.
The Arwinfs sections are so small and short they might as well not be there, they just make more annoying to traverse from one planet to the other each time you have to go somewhere, and they aren't actually fun so it ends up only harming the game. It ruins the phasing, it task you with something repetitive and boring and its there for no reason other than calling the game a Star Fox game and not just because of the character.
The inventory management is extremely basic and can be annoying because. Only think you have to pay attention most of the time is magic and mushrooms and the later felt added just to have something to collect instead of something more natural for the gameplay like different kinds of ammo for the fire rod and the other abilities.
The combat (which was addressed in the video)
The characters are not appealing and uninteresting, even getting to the point of being annoying, and I'm not talkong about Tricky here, I'm talking about Fox.
I haven't played any traditional Star Fox but even I can tell his personality was ruined.
Selfish, uninterested, arrogant and pretty much just an asshole who is saving the planet not because he wants, but because it's his job. That kind of protagonist can work and Rare has done it a couple of times with characters lile Kazooie (in a lesser degree) and Conker (in a more extreme degree) but Fox? He feels like and asshole and that's it, nothing to do with the portrayal from the original games made by Nintendo.
The rest of the cast are either assholes or bland NPCs that only task ypu with stuff in the most artificially and videogame-y way possible.
It feels closer to a Conker sequel with those characters and gross humor that popa from time to time than a Star Fox or Zelda game really.
I do think the complains pointed out in the video are correct, but they do not show why people begin to call it a bad/mediocre Zelda clone. I think the problems I pointed out suit better those complains.
Eirher way, if anybody likes the game that is perfectly fine, I wanted to love it because it was the final game Rare made for a Nintendo console (not handheld) but I just couldn't because of all of those problems.

Good game, giant deux ex machina ending, combat needs more tweaking, soundtrack is good but held back by the Gamecube's mini dvds.
Graphics, animations and artstyle are still amazing to this day , the gameplay is still good as well.

I do still love this game, but I do agree that overall it feels like a cheap Zelda clone even at the best of times. However it did introduce us to to Krystal as well as expanding the overall universe of Star Fox which ultimately I don't think is a bad thing. I think it was a visually appealing game and while the story does have Star Fox elements just tossed in overall it is still a good adventure story with fun characters. (Not Tricky though)My biggest problem with the game from the first playthrough as well as repeat plays over the years has been the lack of a dungeon for each of the spell stones. I think that would have added some extra length and been nice but still would say as a Star Fox game 3 of 10 but as a adventure game that happens to include Star Fox 6.5 of 10

This game doesn't feel anything like Zelda, respectfully by u saying it feels like a cheap zelda clone implies u were trying to do things or expected things from Zelda to be in this game which it didn't have...the music, the characters, the action, the puzzles were all different

0:26 respectfully...do more research on Fox McCloud and the lore of Star Fox bcuz Fox isn't just a pilot, his occupation is to get missions and go get the job done for money which this game had him do, in the comics Fox didn't even have his Arwing UNTIL the Lylat Wars bcuz he needed it (stated in 1993 comic) before the war Fox was fighting hand to hand and using his blaster

It's not that it's a Zelda-style game but with Star Fox characters, but that it also released the same year as Wind Waker, and both were Nintendo-exclusive IPs on their own console. It's not like a third party platformer: Tak and the Power of Juju, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, Prince of Persia, Psychonauts etc, where they were largely multiplatform and them being multiplatform didn't matter much other than "Is the game actually good?"
If you had one choice, would you have rather picked the new entry in the series that pioneered adventure games, or would you have picked the game in the series known for flying around and shooting things to have, not even a spinoff but a mainline game, where you don't do much flying around and shooting at all? Metroid Prime may have shifted to largely first person, for instance, but at least that was exploring an alien world and finding powerups and shooting big bosses. You know, a Metroid game that actually functioned like a Metroid game.
It's like Nintendo made the bizarre decision to try and compete against itself with Star Fox Adventures.

That is what was hot at the time so they thought it would be easy money. But they let Rare do there own thing, because they only had a 49% steak in the company. It is Microsofts fault for rushing Rare to get finished. They should remake starfox adventures with hd graphics like re4 did, because the game looks good for how old it is, the only work that needs to be done is filling in the gaps of what got cut and making the game how it was suppose to be, I believe this would revive Starfox and would lead to Nintendo caring about their forgotten IPs like F-zero and Metroid prime. I am sick of Nintendo just making new games and leaving beloved franchises to rot in the past. They should ignore starfox command and zero, and just fix adventures and make a follow up game to assault on the switch. THIS IS THE DREAM!!!

@@redpyro5585 You can be salty all you like but with Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance being released for Switch this year, GameCube is almost guaranteed to be next. The accuse of them having their old games rot just isn't really true they are handing them out for almost nothing left and right.
