The first time I ever rode a 250 was on one of these. I was 14 years old, we had just moved to Japan and I had a try out of sorts to get on the Mr. Bike racing team (Steve Martin joined the same team late in the 80’s and won a few Japanese championships). I was scared shitless. All they had available was a 250 for me to try. It was a pros bike with a trick pipe and suspension. I think I was about 125lbs with my gear on! Great memories! Best time of my life! You do amazing work.
In 1981 only the RM 125 was water cooled. The RM250 & RM465 were are cooled models. 81 is also the year Suzuki went to the Full Floater rear suspension.
I have owned about 25 off road bikes and I think I would have to say my Comerfords (England)RM 250 Z would have to be the best. Lovely little bike in the mud. Made a monkey of the guys on the big bikes. I later owned a RM 250 D when I returned to New Zealand and I don't think it was as good.
I still have the magazine article because I raced this in SoCal in early 80's, the power was awesome but that fork rake made it a beast in the berms, the harder you hit them the faster it spit you out. Man that was fun!
the 81 head had that turned spot so it didnt quite cool as good, then 82Z model fixed that always leaved my eyes watering. love the 2 stroke band, and wiseco pitsons easy upgrades on bore .0045 over hold on tight. keeped orignal air box duel stage upgrade flatside carb 1/4 turn throtle on my 125. i still can smoke 250 class. only have less weight easier to handle. i have had it since 1990. now can-am 400 sucide bikes
Nearly looped out, mammoth toe drag 60mph+ on dirt long track, my friends new rm250z- it was a missile! ( i was doing racing changes between gears, holding throttle wide open)
@kingdebary I was 17 in 1982,59 now, yes it was fun bike- till it tried to kill me lol .( I presume it was assembled better at the factory than most of them)cheers.
the first year started in 81 the head was changed because of over heating. in 82 Z models was a sucess. i still have mine and it bored out. RM bikes still rock great bike
I'm currently restoring my 1984 rm125 which has the same general design as this bike which I'll give you creeds it looks good 👍🏻 I was wondering how I shined up the aluminum parts like triple clamp swingarm forks and wheels. Any suggestions so that I can get mine to look as good as yours?
hey i just noticed something, it could have been a quick glare on the camera, but between 0:26-0:27 right after you kicked it, as you brought the kick starter back up, just above your right foot i noticed 2 sparks that looked like it came from the engine.
I have the 84 RM-250 Just restored it not too long ago Still looking for a rear shock for it. If you have any info on that, I'd deeply appreciate it. I've looked high and low, craigs list, Ebay, Vintage Suzuki, everyone looks at ya like , an 84? you sure you don't mean 94 LOL Your bike is a beauty, great work !
It’s 84 rm 250 not 82 the 82 Rm has flat Seat smaller tank & original colouring is off too the 82 rm 250 & 125 are yellow & black with the full floater logo on the swing arm
This is an 82. The 84 model RMs had blue frames. I have been riding and building these bikes for over 30 years. You may also want to check out the 70 other vintage mx videos on my TH-cam channel
the parts you mentioned are anodized so that has to be striped before you can polish. The method I use for removing snoring is easy off oven cleaner. just spray it on and let it sit. Rinse ,dry and your ready to polish. Be sure to do this outside and not in the garage
I also had a 82 RM 250 years ago, man that brings me back, makes me want to ride again, thanks for the post.
The magazines loved the 81 & 82 RM 250, but the 82 in particular had them in awe with a huge mid-range and top end thrust !
Love the 82 rm 250 used to tear pages of them out of motocross mags and tacked them up all over my bedroom walls when ias a youngster. Lol

Mr. You got some SWEET vintage rides ! Love the old 2 strokes !
Hi That is one of the coolest looking suzukis Ive ever seen! A+++
These 1982 RM250’s are extremely potent machines. They could pull a holeshot against one off factory bespoke works bikes of the day.
another awesome bike you have there!!, great looking year for RM's.
I had one... an 83d with a z head on it... very reliable bike, good fun... kinda pining for another and doing some retro mx
the 81 head had that turned spot so it didnt quite cool as good, then 82Z model fixed that always leaved my eyes watering. love the 2 stroke band, and wiseco pitsons easy upgrades on bore .0045 over hold on tight. keeped orignal air box duel stage upgrade flatside carb 1/4 turn throtle on my 125. i still can smoke 250 class. only have less weight easier to handle. i have had it since 1990. now can-am 400 sucide bikes
Im almost positive the first year suzuki made a water cooled bike was the Rm 125 in '81. The Rm250 was first water cooled in '82.
yes...
Nearly looped out, mammoth toe drag 60mph+ on dirt long track, my friends new rm250z- it was a missile! ( i was doing racing changes between gears, holding throttle wide open)
Fun bike to ride

the 250f 1985 bike was good but the 1986 had exhaust valves that failed wear so the newest bike to resto was the 85
You are right! This is one of the fastest 250's I have owned.
Racing changes on dirt track -toe draggin down mainstraight in 4th gear- scared me, friends new bike! lol

Thanks, it would be a shame for them to rust away when they are such an important part of Motocross history.
I bought two to make one complete, hope it turns out to look as good as yours!
1981 was actually the first year for water cooled RM´s
Sweet nice bike man.
