I have just resumed bass after 50 years and being crappy then! I have made it my life's work to master this song (by which I mean just get through it). I am about 3+ months in. The mystification; going to other sites for different tabs; confusion; discovery; learning; understanding; it has been a Ghandian trek. Tom, I could watch ever day and still be in awe. I don't really hate you guys who can fret without moving your fingers!
Find your own way. There is no set way to play this. I'm doing the same thing, bass tabs aren't "holy". I regularly go, yeah but you can also play it in that position like this, which is easier for me so I'll just do that then. As long as the tab is not from the original bass player, ymmv. Good luck, it's not THAT hard, it's just a lot.
dude i watched like 5 people playing this song on youtube just now before I found this and you are the only guy who has got that groove and feel. Right in the pocket bro nice job \m/
@@basscination Hi Tom An excellent rendition of a great bass performance. Thanks for including the transcription, which few other bass players do - it’s possible that they have learnt the part and are not playing from a chart. The unison passage at 2.55 is a challenge! I recently had to read an arrangement of this piece in a big band - it was nowhere near as well written as your transcription. Bravo and thanks John
started playing again 8 months ago, last time played in public...gasp 1979! Almost 40 years of rust but......like the song and I like the way you use the pinky and ring finger across strings....... motivation to clean up my fingering...thanks!
Very nice. Thanks for posting. By the way, you live in my hometown Wiesbaden. I left 30 year and residing in Toronto Canada. Small world . Keep up the good work. Rico
Great playing Tom,got half way through this when you first posted it 4 years ago,but i have just revisited it and i'm giving it another crack.I bought a Mexican fender P like yours, but my tone is not quite there compared to yours ?can i ask you what strings you were using when you recorded this magnificent Bass line.
Hello Mick, sorry but I can't remember what string I had on the bass when recording this video. But soundwise the strings don't matter much anyhow, it's mainly the right picking technique that makes the tone.
Well played. I can safely say i will never master this. Happy to root note my way through and noodle. I can probably manage the sliding octave intro, then root note noodle.

You couldn't have seen the cover by Marta then ? she is bang on the groove and makes it look easy.
So true. I suspect it has something to do with those sunglasses though...
