    I started doing artwork for these guys in 2019 for this very reason: we all work in the name of the hobby - not the almighty dollar. Once I heard about the WotC “great calamity” I doubled down on my artwork. Chris is an awesome leader and all of us are working hard to get to his level of commitment. There are FREE supplemental materials out the wazoo and tons of opportunities for writers and/or artists to contribute. There’s no gatekeepers in this community, which we all know is not the norm!!

    Hello i am brazillian and i start to play recently this system and i love it, is super simple! First i introduce my players with begginers essentials that have a translation to portuguese but i that was a DM start to read the core rules to get more and more about this system!!!

    One thing about the classes and things in the Supplemnts on the Downlods page: Chris is not going to add any of that into the core rules. That's a pillar of his design philosophy, so to speak.
    I will pass on the idea of making an intro adventure, though. That's really a nice idea.

    Try BFRPG for a better ttrpg experience - at least that has been my experience. BFRPG is very well supported by the community.
    I understand the 4th edition will be using the Creative Commons licences and is is the works now.

    Sorry to be that guy, but your closing statement should be “may all your DICE roll great/well” as die is singular and dice is plural.
    Thanks for the review, you’ve convinced me to finally give this game a proper look.

    Back in early 2020, I had been away from the TTRPG scene for almost 40 years, and I wondered if there might be an "open source RPG" that I could at least take a look at. I found BFRPG and fell in love with it right off the bat. When I first saw those documents it brought such a rush of nostalgia that it was almost overwhelming - it was obviously a labor--of-love to recreate the look and feel of the old BX/AD&D 3.5 books, and all I can say is that they certainly succeeded. (But I guess it helps to be of a certain age...) When I ordered the print editions, the effect was even more so.
    I like the fact that it is very "basic", and therefore makes a great framework for building your own "house rules". And of course, the fantastic community around the game are more than just fans of a product made (and controlled) by someone else - and I'm proud to be one of them.
    Thanks for giving it a good review - it really has a special place in my heart!

    BFRPG is an amazing introduction to a D&D experience from years gone by and my chosen ruleset in general. I love the community development process focused on open source OSR culture. Great review.

      BFRPG is an excellent choice for fantasy going forward. A 4th edition seems to be in the works. A lot of games, including BFRPG, will likely be scrubbing the OGL & SRD, don't you think?

    • @SwampDogGames
      @SwampDogGames  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@freddaniel5099 I think the task of scrubbing the OGL & SRD will be harder than people think. But I am looking forward to the new wave of non-d20 based systems that will soon be developed.

    • @ChrisGonnerman
      @ChrisGonnerman ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SwampDogGames It is, in fact, quite a big job. But unlike most of those doing this very task, we have a surprisingly large and dedicated community of talented people attacking the problem. We have completed phase 1, excising the SRD, and most of phase 2, removing, rewriting, or replacing copyright-infringing material. We are of course reduced to guessing somewhat as to what might be challenged, so we are erring on the side of caution. We have a separate effort reviewing cultural, mythological, and historical sources of monsters. Many we thought were safe will require rewriting, while some we thought we'd have to drop are actually okay. Right now the core rules are in their second pass of proofing, of what will be at least three passes. In parallel we are doing identification of SRD text in our adventure materials in preparation for cleaning them up for relicensing; there should be a lot less copyright-infringing material there, especially after we redo the monsters that will have changed in the core. And the Equipment Emporium is basically clean right now, though there is art and layout to accomplish yet.

      @@ChrisGonnerman Well if anyone can do it it's probably your group. 😎 Thank you for taking the time to do this overhaul of BFRPG. Keeping the core of this hobby open for future generations to enjoy is a noble task.

    Game is great, because it is so easy to hack and there are good nuggets in there including how they handle grappling is a pretty simple manner. And picking up a ton of Odysseys & Overlords on DriveThruRPG because you can't beat their current sales prices. Most of their content for that particular game for under $20.

    Please note that the OGL does not provide any game information or mechanics. It is a license. A legal document. The rules that the OGL allowed people to use are called the SRD.

      My understanding they where keeping the core D20 feel but removing words / terms that WotC could exert copyright over. With the new CC License for SRD 5.1 I am no longer sure what the game plan is, or if a 4E is necessary anymore

    • @toddrlyons
      @toddrlyons ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SwampDogGames We (the community) could have stopped mid-rewrite, but it honestly felt better to remove all that language and express those ideas in our own words. Safe to say we felt betrayed by Hasbro and the new 4th Edition under CC BY-SA is as much a public statement as it is a version. It's not necessary for anyone to replace their existing books: full compatability is always our promise. However, buyers of the new editions of the books will receive a lot of new artwork in addition to the usual minor error fixes. Thank you for the shout-out. It didn't feel preachy; just your honest reaction. Anyone can make a review channel. You distinguish your channel by being yourself in the way you express yourself. Giving praise for hard work encourages people to keep working. Thank you. We are grateful to you for these kind words.

    Boring Fantasy RPG. Perhaps the least interesting or inspired thing to come out of the OSR movement. The writing is just plain awful and the adventures read as if they were written by teenagers. But hey, at least it's cheap.

    • @SwampDogGames
      @SwampDogGames  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yes basic Fantasy can be a little Basic but to call it the "least interesting or inspired thing" is a little too harsh. Its value is derived from the fact that it is built from the ground up to be an open source RPG anyone can hack. If you don't like something, send your fixes to them, help the community make it better.

    • @hoogmonster
      @hoogmonster ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry but if you want flashy graphics design on all your games that's fine, but BFRPG is only as boring as the games you play at your table using your imagination, with your friends. The real beauty of the system is it's truly old school, the writing is not awful I really strongly disagree with you on that, and the support from the community of both players and people who freely develop for BFRPG and the freedom the game offers for home brewing is immense. As for the comment about it being cheap, yes it is and that is a very good thing for those on low incomes who can get into role playing for free, rather than paying a small fortune to WOTC to run what ultimately is not a better game than BFRPG once you lose the word padding and art.

    • @MarkHyde
      @MarkHyde ปีที่แล้ว

      The value of the OSR is it's ability to be re-written, rules plugged from other games into new ones and the ability to iterate - I'd say to you that if have your own ideas about what a well written OSR product Is then write it yourself! Not a glib throwaway line - the movement needs fresh new ideas to keep it alive. If THIS game doesn't enthuse you about its rules as a published product and the adventures aren't interesting enough, then show us - the rest of the community what YOU think the best is. Produce a game yourself. Like Gavin did with OSE. Like what was done with Shadowdark. BFRPG is an introduction game to the hobby.
