The Zombraire's Estate is one of my favorite 1 shot adventures, especially for new players.

I want to get specific on how I use anthologies. I read Merilla's Magic Tower and it got me thinking: A man hires the party to infiltrate the tower and fight their way up ( Game of Death style ) to the the top to do the thing. The man has told them that that the top floor of the tower cannot be scaled for some reason. The man lied, and he scales the tower to the top and does the thing while the players distract, do the work and get framed for the thing done. That's what it looks like in my binder right now. Not the adventure in the book, but obviously fueled by it.

I've heard some people claim that they hate anthologies because you get five-ten adventures but usually only one or two are any good. I just want to point out that that's about the same ratio with single adventures. My shelf is full of anthologies.

I've had the 1st anthology for a while and just started reading it. So far 2/4 adventures have gone in my binder to be reworked and used in play. That's a good ratio! If I get one good adventure out of an anthology, it's money well spent.

It sounds like you haven't played the entire abomination vaults. Its a horrendous experience overall, the authors put some effort into 1st chapter, but after that its a meaningless, uncreative and braindead grinder.

So hey, thanks for the kind words about the Adventure Anthology Series! I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I'm really happy to hear from someone who gets how these books are intended to be used. I will mention though that the license change to Creative Commons does not change the fact that the decorative artwork is still licensed directly to me. That's the case for all of our books. Artwork such as maps and diagrams that is required for use of an adventure will be covered by the same license as the adventure if at all possible, and under some free license one way or the other.

My second-most-played RPG in the early '80s (after AD&D). The worst thing about it was the carry-over elements from D&D- for instance secret agents having to buy their own equipment out of their own pockets, and the Bureaus (the equivalent of character classes) having different XP requirements, despite having no special abilities to justify different costs.

Top Secret was such a fun game in the 80's!

Someone should make an adaptation of this to work on BX rules. I know someone has already done thay for Gangbusters. Not sure how well that would work but at least it would be more playable and compatible. That being said part of me wants to get an original copy of this and try to run it, but then again where would I find a group willing to play.

Top Secret had many many problems. But it also had a really good "feel" to it I use it as a supplement to better RPGs.

At the time D10 dice did not exist. So we ancients had to make do with a D20.

My dad had Top Secret. I'm pretty sure I found it at his house with no clue how he got it. It was fun learning the book and adventuring the map. Neither of us was a good story teller or very clever. I bought some other role playing books that had military weapons and vehicles and we inserted those into the Top Secret world.

This supplement holds a special place in my heart... It's really for self centered reasons though. *spoilers possibly follow* That art on p.1 is pretty awesome; but the bunk beds on p. 54 are pretty bad for whoever has to squeeze into the bottom bunk; that hive on p. 73 isn't as imposing as the murder hornet references it's based on; however that was made up for with the zombie murder hornets on p. 80! I had fun making some of the art for this book, and some of these were the last drawings I've done for fun. Anybody who enjoys drawing and RPG's should go join the Basic Fantasy forums and just throw some sketches out there for use. I hope everybody enjoys some of the atmosphere my drawings brought, even if it's humor because I drew the top bunk too low (and got my chops busted in the forums, we determined the bottom bunk must be for those skinny elf creatures...). Chris is a great guy, and has from time to time reached out to the various artists who contributed for free to do paid work for him. He's great at helping someone format their work for actual publication, and that learning experience is not easy to come by for zero cost!

I feel like if you’re doing a review of a product, I personally think you’re going to need to spoil it. After watching this, I don’t really feel like I have any better idea of what these modules are like, or if they’re worth picking up. Maybe do a quick section at the beginning trying to be spoiler free, but when I read module reviews, I want to have someone give me a rundown of what happens in the module, if it’s well written, and if it’s worth picking up. I feel like a spoiler-free review is only really helpful for a player, and I don’t know that most players are watching reviews of modules they want to play.

Thanks for posting this video. I played and loved Top Secret back in the mid to late 1980s and still have a lot of my modules, game equipment, etc. (Including the original box set and the special forces focused centric supplemental set called "Commando." It eas a nice trip back in time. ❤

Thank you for the review. There are a few RPG Bundles up today. This Bundle is back for the next eight hours or so. Humble Bundle is having daily Bundles for Christmas, so check often. I could see the "etiquette" book being given to that player who tend to show up at open tables. At first I wondered if it is designed for new players in the spectrum. By the end of your video, I felt bad for even considering it being offered to the most severe individual. Printed out, it is a great "White Elephant" or cruel 🎁 present for one's DM. All-in-All, I think you saved me $18 to spend on another bundle. The PathFinder 2e Legacy bundle looks inviting.

If you play 5e skip this video. He admits he is biased towards 3.5 and doesn’t care for 5e. Not worth watching at all.

Put chapters of the different items next time. You ramble on a lot and it makes it hard to follow the actual content.

Okay, here is one simple blurb on THAC0 that explains it: *If your roll+all the bonuses you get (magic weapon, stat bonus to hit, situational bonus, whatever), is as high or higher than your THAC0 - Enemy AC, you have hit that enemy.* None of this matrix stuff required that people somehow always need to point out. It's the same as insisting that multiplication is hard because you have to look it up on a table - except in this case it's not even that, it's adding or subtracting two numbers. (I guess it's understandable that people might get confused at times since most often these games make something really simple like this really opaque). At the table, you do it like this when you attack: *Roll the d20, add your bonuses. Subtract this number from your THAC0 score. This is the lowest AC you can hit (i.e. you can hit that AC or any AC worse, higher, than it).* Inform the DM that you are hitting an AC of X or worse. Alternatively, you can mark down what your THAC0 minus the bonuses is, and subtract just the die roll from it (which will often be just the same but might be awkward since your bonus is not always going to be the same). *For example*, say that you have a THAC0 of 17, and you have a magic sword +2 and strength that gives you +1 to hit (a total of +3). You can just mark down a THAC0 score of 14 to hit with that weapon. Now if you attack and, say, roll an 8, you can tell the GM that you hit if the enemy has an AC of 6 or worse, i.e. higher (since 14-8=6). If you can do what is at most low double-digits subtraction, you can work out THAC0 at the table without any silly matrices that supposedly grind the game to a halt. I was doing this when I was literally eight or nine years old, fluently. (You can, of course, just choose ascending AC and whatever, and that won't really affect the game in any way, but it has always confused me why this is such an impossible thing for people.)

I have these books and they're very nice but I'm DMing for middle school kids who all have the 5E books and I don't see being able to get them away from it and really, there's no reason to.

Hi. A bit late to the party with these vids, but I do have a question. You mentioned you had a better suggestion for newbie GMs for adventure ideas. This caught my attention. What are they?

Man, what a fantastic trip down Memory Lane! Me and my mates from school played Top Secret regularly from 1985 (when I got it for Christmas) through to 1988 (when I got Top Secret S. I.). A really enjoyable game - you're completely right, it was definitely clunky and flawed as a system, but wonderfully evocative. Incidentally, for those who played S. I., I believe it's one of the most underrated systems ever. A fast-moving, fantastic TTRPG. I don't get to game much any more - we occasionally play Call of Cthulhu (still phenomenal - this was my first RPG and it completely blew my mind), but I still have all my S. I. stuff, in case one day... hopefully... Anyway, I really enjoyed the review. Keep it up!
