Both of my parents are Jamaican born... I was born in NYC an 80s baby and was raised in the 90s ..I can definitely hear Jamaican influence in rap, especially NYC rap. But you have to realize that the dominant Black culture in America is African-American. In the UK and Canada the dominant Black culture is Jamaican. Black culture is always used as popular culture and whatever Black population is dominant, their culture will be the most heavily represented. In NYC I grew up in a relatively mixed neighborhood, but most of the Black kids I knew were born in Jamaica (or other islands) or born to Jamaican (or other Caribbean) parents. Our culture was instilled in us heavily, but we were also New Yorkers. Both cultures were represented but the Caribbean part of us is dominant. We listened to the songs and heard the patwa sprinkled throughout the rhymes and the cadence of their flows: Busta Rhymes, Heavy D, Chubb Rock, Special Ed, Grand Puba, Biggie, Slick Rick, KRS-One, Doug E. Fresh, Phife Dawg, Foxy Brown, to name just a few. You can still hear it in the newer rappers too. It may not be evident to non Caribbeans, but we can always tell who is one of us.
