    • @mikemarler8224
      @mikemarler8224 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If Sam says it's leaking "A little" oil, it's probably a big puddle in the driveway. He's clearly afraid to do the real work of properly maintaining an exotic car (or paying to have it done). Much of the work he's already done could have been easily and more quickly done on the bench when the motor came out for the oil seal repair. Trying to cheap out, or take the easy way, often leads to wasted effort and doing things twice. For example, if it took him 8 hours to do the timing belts when the engine was in the car, he wasted at least 6 or 7 hours, because it's a slam dunk job when the motor is already on the bench. With cars like these, you don't cheap out on maintenance, and you do as much as you can when the engine or trans is out of the car.

      Honestly I ran Bar's rear main seal stop-leak in a Lotus Esprit and it worked like a charm. Five years later and it's still fine, no complications. It's at least worth a try if you're already willing to do the full repair anyway. Worst case it doesn't work and you have to do the seal. But it's a fully chemical formula, so there's no particulates in there to clog anything (like head gasket sealer has) so it's really a risk-free option. And I would not want to tear that car down again after all that.

      I'm guessing that as the knowledge of what was needed to be done was shared here, if you were to do the same project at home, you'd have the knowledge here, so it's not relevant to add the expert advice. I think this makes sense. The $10k of parts and transport is a fair number to give you a sense of what it takes. Of course every project will be different, and so whatever expert advice would be different too. You could go to the extreme and add the price of phone calls to the parts suppliers ... the cost of delivery of parts ... the cost of petrol and wear and tear on your vehicle driving to/ from suppliers etc etc. It's very possible the advice and help from Ratarosa could have been supplied offline in a forum or something (I'm guessing as a super enthusiast he's only too happy to help problem solve on various forums ). So it might take you longer to get there, but you'd get there in the end.

      Lol stop leak doesn't ruin engines, it works by making the seals swell, and in his situation it's totally worth it. I've used it on all my cars. The only issue I could see is it making the oil slightly thicker, but I only use a third of a bottle if that and it still works. I've saved time and money with transmission seals, and hard to get to engine seals. There's a time and a place to use products sometimes

    • @xerolift
      @xerolift 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Does his fix in anyway impact the suspension or integrity of the vehicle? That small little area is not going to cause some catastrophic disaster and you'd never know but he's honest and shows everything he does. His rebuilds all seem great to me, and although he takes shortcuts, that's the point of a salvaged vehicle. You can take those shortcuts that do the job but aren't allowed by insurance companies. Stop being so negative. 47k all in for this car isn't bad.
