True. When the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire occurred on March 25th, 1911; we as society finally began to take workplace safety as something that has to be taken seriously to prevent injury and loss of life.

I watched this as i've just finished reading 'Body 115' compelling reading. I found it incredible that there were people who were so intent on continuing on their journey, that they were ignoring all safety warnings and directions...even, apparently, people still queing at the ticket office!! If someone ran towards me telling me don't go up there it's on fire, I'm definitely going to run in the opposite direction. The book is well worth reading..lots of details in time order and fascinating research into how the identity of the unknown body 115 was eventually discovered.

Times wern't so different, always takes tragedy to move those 'in charge', who prefer to cut corners if given the chance. 6 'serious' escalator fires in 3yrs inbetween Oxford Circus fire & Kings Cross, all caused by 'smoker's materials'. Yet recommendations were too slowly implemented - enforcing the smoking ban, always alerting the fire brigade to any fire [ther'd been a minor 'smoulder' at the bottom of Victoria Line escalators under an hour before the Piccadilly escalator caught fire, just burning tissue; too small to bother fire services with yet had they been called they'd likely still be present when the Piccadilly escalator caught] - cleaning the tracks, training staff to use the 'water-fog' system [those entering the escalator machine room at Kings Cross wern't even aware there was a switch to activate this system, which could've slowed the fire allowing time for fire fighters to tackle it] London Underground management didn't take fire seriously, they assumed they'd remain just a minor nuisance

I think there have been three fires in the UK in recent decades which have, or will, make major changes. Those are Bradford City stadium, Kings Cross and Grenfell Tower. All caused many deaths, and all spread very quickly. Two were probably caused by smoker’s matches, and the same two probably would have been minor incidents if things had been properly maintained, and kept clean and free from litter. A possible fourth fire which could be added to the list would be the one at Douglas on the Isle of Man, but I don’t know much about that one, except that it involved a highly flammable plastic material, so more like the Grenfell Tower fire.

In America it's privately owned nightclubs and guns and construction bodges. In the UK, it's public transport / council owned flats and, previously , football matches- shows what a haphazard job both countries' neo-liberalism seems to do (for such overall rich countries) in very different ways.
