After 7/7: How Did The London Underground Respond To The Terrorist Attack? | The Tube

  • The unprecedented 7/7 bombing and evacuation of the underground system was devastating. Police had to take control of the affected stations. Tube bosses then faced a massive recovery and repair operation, not only for the railway equipment but also their own staff.
For the first time in its history, London Underground has opened its doors to record the day-to-day life of its 16,500 staff who work across a network of 275 stations and 507 trains running on over 300 miles of track. Every year more than one billion people use The Tube that's 3 million journeys a day; commuters, holiday-makers, day-trippers, businessmen and women, students, overseas visitors.
This series goes behind the scenes to tell the story of some of the dedicated and colourful characters who work for LU, doing a difficult job under often challenging and stressful circumstances.

I remember this day well because my mother missed one of the trains by seconds because she'd stopped to put her ticket away. I dread to think what would've happened if she'd rushed and gotten on that train. I remember being in school and seeing it all unfold, panicking because I know my mother takes one of those routes, my teacher allowing me to have my phone on so I can try and contact her but I couldn't because the lines were all busy. Then getting a message through my school's reception and a teacher bringing me a scribbled message on a sticky note.
"I'm ok, I missed the train. Going to be home late tonight, please order food and I will pay you back when I get home. - Mum"
I still have that note in my scrapbook.

I particularly feel for Muhammed Jamil who ran into the tunnel to help rescue the public, knowing that the perpetrators did their deed in the name of his religion. You can see in his face the despondency he feels. I wonder if he suffered any abuse because of his beliefs. I would hope most people would appreciate the difference between the extremist terrorists and those like Muhammed who are people of peace and go above and beyond to help others in distress.

Osama Bin Laden was still releasing videos. There was a real feeling of inevitability that there was going to be a big terrorist attack in the UK soon, committed by Muslims. Some terrorists blew up 3 tube trains in the morning, and then a double decker bus an hour later.
They were supporters of Al Qaeda, who carried out the attacks because, to paraphrase "the democratically elected British government continuously carries out horrific atrocities towards innocent people in the Middle East, and seeing as you support the democratically elected British government, you deserve to be punished".

something is not right with all of this: why were the CCTV's not working on that day ? Why was there a controlled demolition van near the bus that exploded ? the trains from leeds to london were cancelled or delayed, so they could not have done this at the time it did.

Gencturk92 I didn’t know that. Dealing with my own (possible) disaster at the time I was removed from anything else for a long time. Just coming round to finding out what went on it seems “What Bush can do we can do better” is coming to mind, using the populous as pawns in a “We’re bigger than you” Parliamentary battle and excuse to create War in Iraq.

I now work on the underground but 7/7 I worked for the NHS and we had about 25 walking wounded come in. We lost one of our colleagues from Great Ormond Street in the Kings Cross bomb. Horrific time and not one I’ll ever forget
