  • When I first heard about the Insta360 One X2 and saw some of the footage that other runners were filming, I wasn’t really sure what all the fuss was about, and I didn't think that it was something that I'd ever use in my films. But I think I was looking at the camera in the wrong way.

    When you said you were sent the camera from the company, I was like "oh no not another so called review". But I was wrong. This is a highly intelligent, balanced, and thorough review. Just as there is no one size fits all training plan, there is no camera that fits all use cases. You somehow are able to bring out the camera's beauty by bringing out it limitations, and then showing how best to use the camera to achieve different goals. It is as if I was fed wisdom - not just knowledge - that could only be accrued from a wealth of experience and suite of tools that I do not have the luxury to acquire. Thanks for helping me make my decision Jeff!

    I agree with you about the resolution; I have the insta360 one x and then moved to the one R. But I haven't bought the one x2 because all three have the same 5.7k and frame rates. The insta360 one R2, or X3 will need to address this and give us all the bump in resolution we've all been craving.
    A sunny day tip:
    rotate the pole in your hand to roughly align an edge with the sun - If you can see it's shadow on the ground this can help with the alignment, but it doesn't have to be uper accurate. This allows both front and back sensors to expose evenly = better image stitching.
    As a self-confessed geek, I love the opportunity re-framing brings. It has opened the door to so much more possibilities and shots that a gopro simply wouldn't be capable of doing. I also like the ability to be in the shot, as a post to outside shooting other people having fun! The fact that you don't need to worry about maintaining the shot, means you can get on with what you're there to do - action sports first, then put your directors hat on later 😉
    This last point is a big reason why I sold my gopros and took a deep dive into the world of 360. A 360 camera allows the opportunity to hand off the camera to someone else in your group, even if they are a novice at filming.
    I have taken my 360 cameras skiing, and there's simply night and day difference, compared to the hours of footage from my gopros that have ended up on the cutting room floor.
    A 360 camera is kick-ass technology, which is slowly getting better - bring it on I say!

    About 35 years ago i shot film in 16mm, and could not imagine having equipment like this. That 360 camera is just wonderful, you have great artistry in how you use it and in the days I was a runner I could not imagine running with a selfie stick, but it looks like a number of your fellow runners do this and do it well. The editing is pretty exciting as well and a lot of work but with great results...

    Wow this is the most useful video I’ve ever watched about the ONE X2! Thanks for putting so much thought, detail and organization into this video! I totally agree with your comparison between 360 footage and drone footage. That both can add a great deal of visual interest and unique perspective to a video, as long as they’re used sparingly.

    Thank you Jeff, I have the same experience as you but did went away from my insta360 one X in favor for the GoProMax, mostly because the red dot issue on the insta camera's (lenses at the same position behind each other). And I like the proTune options of the Max. What I am missing is the unbelievable great Insta studio options in the GoPro software. So sometimes a still use the insta studio software to track my shot (not available in GoPro software). Next I also combine the camera range you use to tell my Mountainbike stories. Thanks and keep up with your great interesting video stories!

    I have used the 360 for several years now and learned everything you say here the hard way. I wish I could have watched this two years ago. You pretty much nailed it, excellent review. Your pros and cons are exactly what I have found and I have come to the same conclusion that it adds perspective but should be used in moderation. I have yet to find any software that can remove all the fisheye distortion correctly in an Insta360 video, there is no equivalent of linear mode in a gopro. I think if they included that option in the post processing it would increase the usability dramatically. Although resolution would still be limited.

    Great review Jeff.
    I found immediate that the X2, should not be used as your main vlogging camera. I made the mistake of taking one continuous clip that was about 50 mins long. Then once you import it into the insta360 software, it does not provide enough tools to split the videos into multiple clips which I find very strange and disappointing. And as you mentioned it'll also take a very long time to process and export.

    Great info!
    I've had various Gopros in the past and have the Insta360 Go 2 just because it's super lightweight and good for mounting on RC. I've used the Go 2 for running as well and think it's good enough, but wind noise is a real problem.
    Been curious about the "real" Insta360 cameras, but not convinced because of the additional work at post and too wide a view for generic filming. Thanks for cementing these concerns, now I know it's not for me.
    Do love the shots you use it for and I am glad that you take the effort to use that speciality tool!

    • @rhettauthement3493
      @rhettauthement3493 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Go2 also, was looking at this because I'd love a 360 camera but frankly it's got a really good field of view, up to 1440p, and the fact of how crazy small it is and easy to just pop on your chest with the necklace thing or on your hat with the clip.
      My main problem is battery life and heat. If you film in max resolution and fps in pro mode the most I got was a 6 min video before I guess it over heated cause it would stop recording and when re starting it would barely hit 1 min.
      I've now dropped the resolution to 1080p because of space issues and TikTok is only 1080 or less and won't let you post anything higher. I've also made sure to shoot in short burst rather than filming everything.

    I owned a GoPro. My plan was to film my training and family activities, maybe not to put on TH-cam for monetization. After a couple of months I realized that the most important skill to deliver good looking videos is post production, of course the narrative and storytelling is even more important. Cameras and lenses are just tools for a brilliant film maker. The interesting part of this video was hearing you talk about how you use the different cameras and how you plan your films.
    I sold my GoPro camera and I'm not looking back. Taking photos is enough for me.

    I agree with you on the work load, just trying to piece together our current Puerto Rico trip has definitely added another step in our production which would lead to delays in completing videos.

    Hey Jeff, Great perspective on using the One X2 like another lens on a DSLR. That hadn't occurred to me. I've got their Go 2 and am struggling with something you mentioned briefly in post production using their software, and this will apply to the One X2 as well. Their app on the iphone or iPad is much more functional than the Mac version, so I'd rather edit with it on my iPad. But once their files are downloaded to a hard drive or cloud account, I don't see any way to get them back into the iPhone or iPad based editing software. Any thoughts on a solution here? Thanks again for your great, thoughtful commentary.

      I haven’t used their software but have used many other video editing tools, so I have two ways that might work for you: 1) if you can copy your file to your iCloud account, you can then access it on your Apple device via the iOS “Files” folder app. Most of my apps can then open/save files to that location. 2) Otherwise, I use a small “Lexar” microSD card reader that has the Apple “Lightning” interface and the Lexar app to copy files back and forth to my iPhone’s Photo app. Again these two methods work for all my transfer needs. If you need more details, just ask.

      Thanks! It will depend on whether you’re filming the entire time it’s on, and at what frame rate. Insta360 claims, “one fully charged battery can continuously shoot for roughly 80 minutes at 5.7K@30fps.”

    Excellent review of the One X2. I was just weighing the pros, cons and use cases of bringing the One X2 along with my Hero 10 on my next trip. I want to reduce my gear load and was thinking of the scenarios where one would be better than the other. Your video helped me organize my thoughts. The point you made about the added processing required by the One X2 is important and something I forgot to consider. So far, I've only used my One X2 for short, long weekend trips so the added step of rendering files in Insta360 Studio hasn't been too onerous. But for a 7+ day trip in a faraway location (where I'm more likely to record more content) that intermediate processing step will become painful if I use the OneX2 as my primary camera.

    I use it quite often as my primary action camera. Probably 75% of the footage from my Rim to the Unknown adventure was shot with it. I agree close up shots are much better with somthing like a gopro or sony cam but the 360 camera can take some amazing shots and could be used solely if you don't mind the quality of it.

    If someone was just going to have one camera, for filming runs and stuff (with a stick) which would you recommend between the one x2 or the hero 10?
    I'm a total novice to cameras and video editing wanting to get shots of myself running on and off trails, sometimes with a selfie stick sometimes mounted on me. Thanks!

      Hey Stephen, they’re both great options. For me I’d lean towards the GoPro if I could only have one, but I know lots of people who shoot just for fun using only a 360 camera.

  • @Ulrich.Bierwisch

    Same with me. But I use the One X2 as action cam on the bicycle and as "poor man's drone". I just got the new 3m selfie stick that works great as "drone" including in a lot of situations where a real drone is not allowed. Mounted on the bike I also get the hands free shots, so so only other camera I need it my GH5.

    Great review, your long wait shows in your research and working knowledge of the camera and workflow. I still have the OneX and on the fence because the OneX 2 was released in 2020 so we are likely going to see another new OneX version in 2022 so the $450 investment is something I am considering for the next version. The OneX is good enough for now IMHO.

      I don’t have much experience with the GoPro Max, but most people seem to prefer the Insta360 One X2 because of its smaller size and weight.

    How long can you record for? I need about an hour of recording time without overheating, memory card fouls, and I need the ability to connect an external mic..

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you need reliability and the ability to use an external mic, you may want to look at a larger mirrorless camera instead. A GoPro would allow you to use an external mic but not without potential overheating issues. These little cameras really are meant for filming ‘action’ in short bursts.

  • @zachmac
    @zachmac ปีที่แล้ว

    So you ever use external power? and if so, any issues with LONG recording sessions?

    • @JeffPelletier
      @JeffPelletier  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t tried that, so I can’t report on how it performs for longer sessions. I typically just record for up a minute or so at a time. Sorry!

    On scratching the lenses, the lens protectors available for the One X2 really are a good plan, if you want to extend the life of the camera.

    Salut Jeff! I have to shoot a 360 degrees video this summer, flying my M3 over the islands of Sorel, Qc. - this video will be showased to be watched with Oculus Quest googles (or equivalent). 360 degrees FOV is not necessary, but at least 270 degrees FOV will be.
    I planned to attach the Insta 360 ONE X2 to the bottom of the drone, using a DJI Mount piece. But, before that, I did some tests on the ground and was unimpressed with the resolution of the Insta although it was a 5.7K.
    Of course the Mavic 3's camera is a lot better, I didn't expect to get a matching result, but I was surprised that the image was low-res and also that the exposure was a big puzzle to solve. Your vid showed me why the 5,7K was so "ordinary" after post editing.
    Thanks a lot for helping me understand this. Now I'm not sure which way the real shooting will go from now. Attach a GoPro instead of the Insta ? (we need a little FPV sensation) or maybe just use the Hasselblad on the M3... Or tell my client to hire a pro team equipped with better cameras.
    Thanks again. You definitively pinpointed the weak spot in this project.
