I love this camera. I use this camera specifically for riding on my motorcycle to be able to catch EVERYTHING. The beauty of this camera is that you don't have to point it in any direction. Obviously you would want to have it face a certain direction most of the time, but it isn't dependent upon you making sure it is always facing the "right" direction. The only other "con" (you didn't mention it) is that you have to edit the 360 footage and export it so you can add it to your video editing software. It's a necessary step, but totally worth it, but it IS an extra step in your process.
I have had the X3 for some 8 months now, like you pleased with it. My only gripe is the issue of battery drain due to Bluetooth connectivity being permanently on, meaning you have to remove the battery if it’s left for a number of days.
Thanks for doing this. Gave me a way better understanding of the camera function and features than the manufacturer videos. As someone who owns a DJI drone too, this camera seems like a better purchase than a drone. Draws less attention, basically no restrictions, you get some very similar, if not better angles. Seems like best investment for explorers everywhere. Thanks again.
I have the one x2. Love it. It's well worth the money! I honestly ( for me ) didn't see a reason at the moment to get the x3. But it is still a good camera!
I have one - fantastic camera, but I dropped it while riding the motorcycle, both lenses were damaged but not the camera. I bought 2 new lenses from ebay and replaced them myself. Now it's back to business!
@@rogerbaidon with insta 3x the hardest part was to remove the ring around old lens, because it was glued to the base. So I made a tiny cut with dremel, and removed ring with the screw driver. Then I reused same ring to tighten new lens in place, then a drop of glue again. Rest was relatively easy. Obviously I had to disassemble the camera and take both optical blocks out. Took about 3 hours, result is: like new lens. Good luck!
Agree that the X3 is the way to go, and i also use it all the time. Unfortunate the new diving case is extremely expensive with 114 euro and shipping of 15 euro. That's just crazy. Also when i sold my X2 and bought the X3 i had to buy new batteries, case, new microphone adapter etc. So i am very afraid if next year's X4 will be launched you again have to buy all new accessories. To me this is extremely customer unfriendly

However when you come out of the water, and you are still filming how is the result with the mounted dive case outside the water? Still however the case is extremely expensive, and for those people who have the x2 dive case or old x3 dive case, they again have to purchase a new one. There is not even an attractive discount from insta ! And again price in europe 114 euro and 15 euro for shipping. Totally crazy!
Its good, good aaaand goood! I just done 3 turtle dives, found mr.Frank and his family. The reframing like always is a game changer, and now even underwater 🤙
Nice video!🙂 Looking forward for the divecase video, looking into the X3 but one of the times I will use it the most is for snorkeling/diving and heard alot of problem with the merging for the back and front lense when it go under water, so if the new case fixes that I'll be really happy and will consider it or maby still go with the action 4 🙂👍🏻
The temperature issue is not well tested indoors where the ambient temp is often in the low 70's F. I have experience some issues with overheating when in full sun and 90+ degree weather. So consider both the ambient temp and the shade factor when using the X2 or X3. If you need to get footage you may have to plan for some cooling stops or other cooling methods.
Thank you for the detailed review. I’m toying between getting the X3 or X4. With what our local COSTCO has in price for the X3 with the related accessories, the X4 would be around $200 more. I currently use my iPhone 14 Pro to shoot inside the kitchen. Coming up on a long trip and want a good video camera for that purpose. For the future, can I also use the Insta360 to record cooking shows at home too? Should I go with the Insta360?
I tried an X3 next to my X2 and personally didnt see much difference to reframed footage, X4 hopefully better image quality, but agree they are alot of fun!
newbie, first time action cam buyer here. Such a helpful video for me - I have seen a bunch of weird arse videos taken with Insta360 and it let me thinking that this camera is just a gimmicky, trick shot thing and that I would get tired of this VERY quickly. The footage you have captured are totally different and given me a totally different perspective on this. I am grateful 😊
I just picked up one of these.. I had a false start vlogging a few years ago, Dropping an action cam.. walking back on the trail, walking into the shot.. picking it up again, finding out later it didn't' quite work.. Not being able to do good vehicle shots solo.. Being worried that my nicer camera will get stolen as I drive past it down the road etc. I am hoping this solves a lot of that.
@@trycrlos It works great. It is hard to tell if it adds to my editing time, but the freedom to just pick whatever shot you want is great. The audio pickup with the internal mic is 'good' if not great, setting up the external works well, but I have not used that so much, because it adds to the fumble time. I did have one issue, and that was with a video I had to dump because for whatever reason the camera didn't record. This was a pretty cold day, -25c so maybe that is why.
I just got it not long ago... Yes, the framing is very important thing. I currently go around cosplay events with my Pikachu suit and someone follows me around to guide the pikachu. Having it just mounted up high and not worrying about framing is super awesome
Great video! I appreciate the honest opinion on the X3. Like many, I'm on the fence about which camera to get. I'm in no way a professional but I always want to get the best for my money. After watching this, I am leaning more on the X3 for the same reasons you mentioned...it's 360! Pretty sure that down the line, there will be a 360 camera with better video quality but this seems it will hold up for a while.
I have two X2s with 5 batteries and many other accessories so the incremental improvements of the X3 doesn't justify an upgrade. Will have to see what the X4 brings. Too bad they don't have an upgrade program.
Thank you for you amazing video. I am in dillema between oneRS twin edition and X3 for motorcycle, travelling and sometimes diving. Based on the specs, oneRS seems to be smarter buy since you get almost the same 360 video quality, but when you switch to single lens mode(4K lens on oneRS) you get better quality than with single lens mode on X3. What do you think?

Just bought one today. I've been seeing a lot of videos on TH-cam using them. I'm super excited to get to know how to use this camera. I do construction work and have tried to make video of my work, but setting up the camera over and over for different shots left me with a bunch of time wasted and videos I have yet to edit. I think this could help
Wonderful video, thank you. I'm thinking of getting the next three. I didn't understand the 30-minute limitation or the SD card. So, when you're out in the field how do you use it all day? Do you have extra battery packs, do you have extra SD cards, do you stop and download the content from the camera into a computer so that you can reuse the camera again? Thanks.
It does the same thing the Gopro does except the Gopro will split files up into 5min 20sec files. So it will shoot more than 30mins at a time but it breaks the file into smaller more manageable size to work with. Honestly this isn't a con at all when you consider other action cams file limits are much lower.
My first one lasted 2 months, died, replaced after i sent it to HongKong. Bought a second one. The replacement developed an SD card not found error, after 1 month, other new one had same issue same day, first use. Waiting on 2 more replacements. Love the functions, reliability is crap.
I realized the same the most important thing !! after the two last updates they improved a lot or unbloked the real full quality image of the X3 recording in 360 5,7k 30fps probably the same sowftware update parameters that use in X4 recording in 5,7k 360 30fps and before was worst still setting everything perfect in manual , and i think this is a "comercial marketing" now that people buy X4 "not all people will do videos in 8k 360 too much memory space" Insta360 decided touching the software raise the image quality in the X3, now is amazing in X3 and everything looks cleaner and looks spectacular.
Hi Rob, how is your experience with the remote? I had one with my One R (from which I scratched the lenses and sold it) but only had connection failures so I returned the remote. I'm thinking about buying a new X2 or X3. Any thoughts?

I have a question: I'm only wanting a camera for recording myself working on technical skills on a bike. So having extreme quality isn't as important to me as durability and ease of use. So what would you recommend? Thanks!
With the X3, you don´t have to worry about the framing tho, you can just place it in the middle of the room or have it hanging top down from a beam or so and then later just frame the things you want... so yeah, maybe the x3 👍
How about lens protection? Using it on harsh enviroment like on your motorbike, dealing with air and dust at high velocity, will polish hard the lens quite fast.

At the 2:55 mark the sun looks huge. Was there a Nova event...and I missed it? Actually the distortion effect of the fisheye lens is a selling feature. My engineering brain didn't get it . We don't want reality we want fantasy...so its okay to have some distortion. It's a story.
Really informative and awesome! But Sir, what's the max. file size it supports? Hope it is more than mere 4 GB? And if you keep down the Video Bitrate , what would be the file size / minute?
Just for some balance, I returned mine after a few days, the resolution and quality of the video is dreadful, and 360 videos don't work underwater at all without an expensive dive housing.
I feel your pain. I recently bought a Lotus Esprit S1 and I can attest that it does NOT work anything like it does in the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me". I think MI5 must have added some sort of expensive dive housing. Oh well, at least I have something interesting to look at while scuba diving in my Lagoon.
Was your Lotus marketed as an action car with a depth rating of 10m, and did it have lots of pictures in the marketing material and on the box of the car being used in water? If so you were misled, like I was.@@madblackeye

it´s good, just like a gopro, or action 3. But you´ll always get the best low-light if you go by manual settings and dial in that way to keep the iso/shutter from changing. I will have a video on this in a month, from Honolulu city, so if you can, stay tuned ^^:D

One con for me. The GoPro 9 has build in gps. With the X3 you need the gps-remote or your Phone. Your phone has to have the app open witch will drain your battery.
After a year of using x3, gopro12 and osmo, pocket 3 doesnt even impress me. The invisible dive case made it even more preferrable. If x4 has gopro like quality then it will be the perfect camera.

Can you watch the videos you take in a VR headset? I was wondering about this for travelling and also recording objects to look at later in a valve index?
@@adamsmith933A Google search says yes, you can record while charging. Keep in mind there are various reports if overheating I've read...and charging adds heat. So pay attention to temperature if you're not in an environment with lots of cooling.
superb video. (not affiliated). totally agree. it's different to GP, and ActionCam.. darn... it's way easier to shoot... and the post in the app is really easy to learn. Yep, i still use my ActionCam.. but TBH, way less than I thought I would. All in all, a complete change in how I capture footage. ( 3 month opinion). I will use this as the go to cam on my channel for the foreseeable future. Solid kit, great app, what's not to like.
Hi Rob, ive started creating YT content and wanted to know whether this would work as a talking head selfie camera. I am after the bokeh effect and wondered if this can be done post? I currently use a iphone 14 pro to do A and B rolls, and it works great however i am a windows user and find it frustrating getting footage off and I'm constantly running low on space. This was on my list of things to buy as i intend to strap it on my car but I would rather avoid buying another camera to do the A and B rolls.
I find the editing to be a bit more confusing with this camera. Do you usually export reframed videos? I have found that trying to export a 360 video is hard and wondering what software you use to accomplish this. I would think its sorta why you get a 360 camera.
Yes, it's a fun camera! I have to learn to stop using keyframes like kids use zoom. (look over here, no over here , wait check this out). My biggest gripe is that I can't upload as a 360 video or cardboard to my personal Google Photos account. It will work once but once I send a link to a friend, it will revert to a splayed panorama (or Mercator-like projection) for them and me. I'm not ready for TH-cam and I don't/won't do Facebook. Haven't tried uploading to my domain yet but a link back to photos would suffice. Otherwise I'm quite happy but wondering what the next camera-of-the-day is going to be.
If motorcycle make you feel that good, consider trying an Electric unicycle , i had over 40 motorcycles in the last 12 years, it's like discovering a whole new universe and they are awesome offroad too !
Good review, I love my insta360x3 but how about as cons : low light performance and the fact that the lens are hard to change if scratched? Nice touch with the microphone protections 😁👍
The cons i have is the quality, the lenses are obvious even before buying, its not a regular action camera even if it has single lens mod. Its the same for all 360 cams. But wish quality was better tho😊
I have not been able to get this to work as well as a single lense camera in lower light. I'm not talking darkness. I did the 8k day time lapse and the Gopro 10 whooped it's butt
No, most of the editing features are actually just n the mobile version, with tons of AI based thing you can use which can’t be done on the computer. I hope its coming to the studio version tho! But i would say the mobile app owns 95% of what you can do with the X3👍

Make it a habit, I remove the battery on mine after every use.

Mine just arrived and i wanted something to be able to record me while im riding my One Wheel. Its amazing. I havent had any issues so far.

The lack of upward compatibility kept me using my two X2s and not upgrading to the X3. I'll have to see what the X4 and X5 brings.

The only action cam I will replace it with is x4. I have gp11 and the only advantage of it over x3 is the quality.

Id love to get an X3 for hiking and hunting. How do you mount it to your backpack? Thats one thing I want to get figured out before I make a purchase.

Hi Rob, how is your experience with the remote? I had one with my One R (from which I scratched the lenses and sold it) but only had connection failures so I returned the remote. I'm thinking about buying a new X2 or X3. Any thoughts?
If you could only buy one of the X3 or the Go3, which would you get? It'd be for travel and hiking with my dog (who usually needs one hand to kep control of with his leash)

With the X3, you don´t have to worry about the framing tho, you can just place it in the middle of the room or have it hanging top down from a beam or so and then later just frame the things you want... so yeah, maybe the x3 👍

How about lens protection? Using it on harsh enviroment like on your motorbike, dealing with air and dust at high velocity, will polish hard the lens quite fast.

How is the audio quality? I realize this is mostly for outdoor use, but I am thinking about using it for interviews with two people talking (maybe opposite sides of a table, etc.)
I'm planning on purchasing an X3 in the very near future. My primary use will be for motorcycle rides. I've heard on some other reviews that the lens's are susceptible to damage. Yes, you can export as a raw 360 video if you prefer that
At the 2:55 mark the sun looks huge. Was there a Nova event...and I missed it? Actually the distortion effect of the fisheye lens is a selling feature. My engineering brain didn't get it . We don't want reality we want fantasy...so its okay to have some distortion. It's a story.
Really informative and awesome! But Sir, what's the max. file size it supports? Hope it is more than mere 4 GB? And if you keep down the Video Bitrate , what would be the file size / minute?
Just for some balance, I returned mine after a few days, the resolution and quality of the video is dreadful, and 360 videos don't work underwater at all without an expensive dive housing.
I feel your pain. I recently bought a Lotus Esprit S1 and I can attest that it does NOT work anything like it does in the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me". I think MI5 must have added some sort of expensive dive housing. Oh well, at least I have something interesting to look at while scuba diving in my Lagoon.

Do you have any indoor shots on insta360 X3? How is it on low light?
it´s good, just like a gopro, or action 3. But you´ll always get the best low-light if you go by manual settings and dial in that way to keep the iso/shutter from changing. I will have a video on this in a month, from Honolulu city, so if you can, stay tuned ^^:D

One con for me. The GoPro 9 has build in gps. With the X3 you need the gps-remote or your Phone. Your phone has to have the app open witch will drain your battery.

From the cycles, there’s at least 8 months to a release of the x4. Might not even be a huge upgrade over the x3 either 🤷

Does using 360 ccamera on HARSH SUN LIGHT damage the censor🤔?
After a year of using x3, gopro12 and osmo, pocket 3 doesnt even impress me. The invisible dive case made it even more preferrable. If x4 has gopro like quality then it will be the perfect camera.

Hi, I just want to know which Micro SD card you using? What setting for the viedo recording? I got my X3 2023 April, I just used it for a few times, but now my X3 video recording doesn't work, it freeze all the time while recording😢, what l can do was press and hold the power button to force it shut it down😢
Format the SD card usually helps 👍

Keep in mind there are various reports if overheating I've read...and charging adds heat. So pay attention to temperature if you're not in an environment with lots of cooling.

You need the insta360 app for 360 video, single lens mode no app is needed
superb video. (not affiliated). totally agree. it's different to GP, and ActionCam.. darn... it's way easier to shoot... and the post in the app is really easy to learn. Yep, i still use my ActionCam.. but TBH, way less than I thought I would. All in all, a complete change in how I capture footage. ( 3 month opinion). I will use this as the go to cam on my channel for the foreseeable future. Solid kit, great app, what's not to like.

Hi Rob, ive started creating YT content and wanted to know whether this would work as a talking head selfie camera. I am after the bokeh effect and wondered if this can be done post? I currently use a iphone 14 pro to do A and B rolls, and it works great however i am a windows user and find it frustrating getting footage off and I'm constantly running low on space. This was on my list of things to buy as i intend to strap it on my car but I would rather avoid buying another camera to do the A and B rolls.
Isn’t x3 actually waterproof itself? Or you need that case just for dives below 10m?
It is, but quality will suffer if you use it without a case… don’t know why but thats how it is
I find the editing to be a bit more confusing with this camera. Do you usually export reframed videos? I have found that trying to export a 360 video is hard and wondering what software you use to accomplish this. I would think its sorta why you get a 360 camera.

Yes, it's a fun camera! I have to learn to stop using keyframes like kids use zoom. (look over here, no over here , wait check this out).
My biggest gripe is that I can't upload as a 360 video or cardboard to my personal Google Photos account. It will work once but once I send a link to a friend, it will revert to a splayed panorama (or Mercator-like projection) for them and me. I'm not ready for TH-cam and I don't/won't do Facebook.
Haven't tried uploading to my domain yet but a link back to photos would suffice. Otherwise I'm quite happy but wondering what the next camera-of-the-day is going to be.

If motorcycle make you feel that good, consider trying an Electric unicycle , i had over 40 motorcycles in the last 12 years, it's like discovering a whole new universe and they are awesome offroad too !
Quite the learning curve for these. It will be a while before zooming around safely and comfortably.

Yes, but videos are saved as 30min clips so there is a gap in the video. This is fixed on the x4 tho

Good review, I love my insta360x3 but how about as cons : low light performance and the fact that the lens are hard to change if scratched? Nice touch with the microphone protections 😁👍
The cons i have is the quality, the lenses are obvious even before buying, its not a regular action camera even if it has single lens mod. Its the same for all 360 cams.
But wish quality was better tho😊

I have not been able to get this to work as well as a single lense camera in lower light. I'm not talking darkness. I did the 8k day time lapse and the Gopro 10 whooped it's butt
I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a iPad Pro. Will I be missing key edit functions by not having a laptop?
The edit features are more extensive on the phone and iPad. The desktop app has fewer features than the phone and iPad app.
No, most of the editing features are actually just n the mobile version, with tons of AI based thing you can use which can’t be done on the computer. I hope its coming to the studio version tho!
But i would say the mobile app owns 95% of what you can do with the X3👍
