Hello Physics Girl, we in the holography community are so happy you made this video! There are so many false claims nowadays about what a hologram is. It´s just perfect to see somebody actually knows what it´s about!
I just went to the Sphere in Las Vegas, and while the U2 Immersive show was mind blowing, I was very disappointed of the "hologram" they have in the atrium. I was so confused, so I came here, to watch this video which reinforced my understanding of a hologram from back when I was in college.
And understand... As are most topics involving Quantum Mechanics, QFT, QCD, Theoretical Physics, etc...The reason being that they are counterintuitive. They fly in the face of everything most of us were taught from elementary thru Highschool & in some cases college...
It is a very good introduction to the topic, though of course, a much longer video would be required to fully explain how the diffraction properties of waves ends up producing a 3D image that rotates in the correct way when we change angle we look at it from.
+Physics Girl I'd like to see a series of 4min videos as well. Or maybe a 8min video (or a few 8min videos), depending on what's best to really explain this!
Which by my estimates should put out two wavelengths that are fluctuating in and out of each other bouncing in and out of each other which is the infinity machine. As a kid in the 80's I always wondered how the holograms for stickers like Lisa Frank and on toy lines like the Visionaries & Supernaturals were created, they appeared to be sculptures photographed in 3D. Thank you for a brief look into the creation of those images and if you don't know about the figures I am referring to, check them out, esp. the Visionaries line, some amazingly articulated 1980's nostalgia right there !!!

First i's a nice prisetation thanks. To understand how we can see the entire image/picture in bouth in the entire hologram as-well as in eahc fragment of the hologram we must undrestant that a hologram is not a picture but an Optical phenominan/media and in this case work's like a window. Lets say if we cover at entire window whit a black sheet of paper with a hole in somewhere and if we take a look through this hole no matter where it is plased, we'll find that we'll see the whole room/landscape/image only our veawing angle is slithly deferint depending where the hole is plased in the paper, again as we remove the entire paper we'll naturaly still see the entire room/landscape/image. Erros: Erro in this prisentation: be aveair its chrutioul that both the reference and objeckt beam is coherent to make a inteferince pattern/hologram. Coretion: The deference is not about coherentce but the vawe-front/vawe-pattern. the referance wave pattern is regular where the opject pattern is destorted/formed by the shape of the opject theo still coherent whit the reference beam/pattern when they mede and form the inteference pattern on the film and are recorted. Thats why we carefuly messoure the lenghts of all our optical rails/trains when recort a hologram. Spelling Erros: Pardon my many lag of propper english spelling skills :-)
Because so many people think they are holograms, I always refer to peppers ghost as "holograms" with full air quotes. Most of my high school friends hate physics and don't want another long winded explanation from me. But I LOVE holograms and optics. I want to minor in physics and I think I could do a lot of research there.
Weak. hand-drawn teaching elements with an abundant scarcity in technical detail. Great for 3rd graders. So much for physics, girl. All the same, cheers for the effort.

Reminds me of the pictures we'd draw in school by folding a paper in zigzag so when the paper is open the image would change depending on where you looked at it from.
I was slowly getting lost until "C-A=B". I'm sure somebody'll say it's an oversimplification, but I think that's exactly what I needed. Keep up the great work! (I really hope these more frequent videos become a regular schedule.)
How cool that you can cut a holographic film apart and still see the whole object. Like what a cool idea for a family gathering- take a big hologram, show it off, and cut it into as many pieces as there are people in front of everyone. You'd have to pass them out and tell everyone to look closely before they'd get it.
Thank you so much for stating the fact that for holograms like this; for each division of the whole, that the whole is contained within each division. This fact is one of the rarest things demonstrable, about some very special things, such as a single member of a species still has all the information about that species. Or a single instance of an electron, still has all the properties of all electrons. Possibly there is such a relationship with many other intangible relationships that may or do exist all through the universe....and teaching about things like this really does inspire one to wonder about all the other types which exist in this, or similar beautiful ways. +Amit H use different surfaces for each color and then combine the output digitally. you can display it on a regular 3D screen with motion tracking. it's a bit of a cheat, but possible nevertheless. maybe you could somehow use a layered surface to do it without cheating, but it would be hard to do it for non-static scenes.

+James Craver Yes you can! You can also do this at home with Holograms kits (around 200$). 3 different lasers of 3 different color are used, in a 3 steps exposure on the same film.
Great video. But it needs a minor correction: Just because each point on the holographic film contains information about the complete object, does not mean when cutting a piece from the film, you still can reconstruct the object. It just means that each point on the film contains information in the form of an amplitude that is derived from the sum of all amplitudes of light of various phase being reflected off all points of the object.
+isethoriginal The small fragment would show you the whole scene but it would be very blurry. The whole holographic film shows the same scene but much more clearly.
Because the interference pattern on the holographic film spreads out the information on it with no correspondence to space. In other terms, if you take a single ray of light, its "presence" will alter the whole interference pattern, therefore each single piece of holographic film holds information about all the light rays reflected by the object.
Once went to a hologram museum in Indiana (don't think it'a there anymore), and they had a hologram of Ronald Reagan. Those things are awesome but creepy looking. They're not just 3 dimensional. You can see all kinds of detail that just isn't there on a regular photograph: moisture on the eyes, light glinting off the hair on the skin. Of course there's no way to show this in a video, but it's pretty striking when you see them in person.
Thanks for this video - in addition to a great source of info on holograms, you've answered a question that's been bugging me for some time, namely, why certain sci-fi machines are said to be holographic if you can cut a piece off the machine and have that piece function just like a tiny copy of the whole machine. This always puzzled me, but now I know, so thanks.

Thanks for including the link to Pepper's Ghost tutorial, I've always wanted to know how it's done! I couldn't replicate the result with a flashlight, bucket, two mirrors and a brick of cheese like Old Man Smitheers used when he was masquerading as a ghost haunting the fireworks factory. Darn you Scooby Doo and your bad science!

Excellent introduction to holograms! It occurred to me while watching that the analogy of people all walking the same speed, but with different stride lengths can be very useful in explaining a lot of light wave phenomena! Way to go, Physics Girl!
At 2 minutes 9 seconds you show 2 laser beams meeting and creating an interference pattern. I tried the experiment and did not get an interference pattern. Please provide more details. Would like to create the interference pattern.
If you had a filter that only let through one wavelength of light, could that work to take a hologram in broad daylight, as long as you know the wavelength for the filter? Or better, put the filter behind the holographic film so you can hold it in your hand!

It records the phase of the wave, So you playback a recording of a coherent standing wave giving it depth that a photograph wouldnt have... Better?
