Hi Mazzy - thanks for the info regarding Little Richard’s later releases. I had no idea but listened to Rill Thing and really enjoyed it. Your musical knowledge is so vast - we are not worthy!!!!

Glad you finally got round to these reissues - I kept pushing for you to get them whenever Omnivore was mentioned on the RG Show. I think you're right, Southern Child is the hidden gem in these sets. I doubt it would have sold at the time, but it's a great album nonetheless. The Fats Domino albums for Reprise, made around the same time, are also worth a listen.

Little Richard remains one of the Kings of Rock n’ Roll influenced by Country Blues and Gospel.

Psychedelic Swamp Music may be a new genre of music that Little Richard gifted us! Love the song titles on the reissued Little Richard Reprise Records! Great overview Mazzy!

Hey Mazz - thanks for exposing this later-era Little Richard to me. Ordered Rill Thing on your recommendation.

I bought Southern Child. On rsd 2020, and you're correct its excellent. on another note I saw him perform in Ann Arbor about 20 years ago, he came on stage pushing a stroller, but when he sat down and played he was 25 again phenomenal. Unfortunately he played way to many cover songs(well) we came here to hear LR hits.

The true King of Rock and Roll. He never really stopped rocking unlike Elvis who only rocked for a few years here and there!

No one has mentioned it on here, so I will. Have you heard Canned Heats version of King Of Rock And Roll? It is amazing. I thought it was a Canned Heat original featuring Little Richard. Until now, I thought he just vanished; that Canned Heat asked him on their song as a tribute I was totally wrong! I wasn't aware of any of these records but will keep an eye open for them. Great informative video here.

Another great one from Mazzy. But Lennon part of the "God Squad" movement of the late-60's/early 70's, preaching the Gospel? Hardly! "Imagine there's no Heaven, it's easy if you try. No Hell below us, above us only sky." Don't you remember how Lennon reacted to Dylan's Slow Train Coming album? Vicious!

  • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893

Hey! I love this run of Reprise albums. I humbly disagree with you about Richard's preaching on The King Of Rock And Roll, I feckin' love it. It's so funny when he's throwing shade on the johnny-come-lately James Brown.
It took me a while to get hold of Southern Child. It was first released on vinyl as a US only RSD release, and far too expensive over here. I waited it out and finally there was a European release. It goes without saying that I love it. The opening with him screaming "I was born in the country!..." goes down as perhaps my favourite album opening of all time.
John was very kind to give me a copy of The Rill Thing a couple of years ago. That's a fine record.
    Cheers - Hedley

Jimi Hendrix played with Little Richard and the Isley Brothers in the early 1960’s before Chas Chandler found him and made him a star. Check out “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” with Hendrix on guitar!

Little Richard is a bit like Jerry Lee. Both of them had deeper(?) roots than rock to draw on as they got older. Jerry had country and gospel; Mr.Penniman had gospel.
