Woman vinyl collector here with a husband who supports my habit. For me, I notice it when we are shopping together at a record store or show and I am the one flipping though and holding the records, men will go up to my husband and start a conversation about the records that I picked out and are holding. They assume he is the one that is buying and collecting the records. Thanks for the video, always appreciate your content!

Hi Melinda! You are so articulate and I love your point of view and your channel. The thought that vinyl collecting is for men only is so ridiculous! I’m a 65 year old widow and I’ve collected records ever since I can remember. 45s, Albums, 8-tracks, cassettes and CDs. It’s the music stupid as Mazzy says!
Why does vinyl need to be divided between male and female? That is creating devision where it doesn't belong. It's seriously don't understand how audio love can be a gender thing.

Funny my girlfriend and I were talking about this 2 days ago. As a vinyl collector, my girlfriend has been asked why is she so into vinyl, which is seen as a "manly hobby." Amazingly enough, you mentioned you were accused of using your husband's salary in collecting your vinyl. My girlfriend has been accused of that as well, but hey, she's worked hard for her needs first, and her collection next. Never gifted her a vinyl yet (but thanks for the idea lol). Melinda, you're such a breath of fresh air for women who are often misunderstood just cause they collect vinyl. Isn't good music, and appreciation for the "art" in music for literally everyone? Kudos! I'll let her watch this video.
The funny thing is, if wanted to buy music before the 80s, you had to buy vinyl. It wasn't looked down upon for anyone to buy records because everyone had to if you wanted music. Now all of sudden it's expected that women only stream music and only men can buy vinyl? So weird.

I’m actually the Program Director now, on a station that only had men on it forever! LoI I also collect records and yes, I’ve run into guys looking at me like I’m an alien when I talk about pressings and such! There is still a ton of misogyny we have to deal with and probably always will. Keep up the good work and know that girls collect too! 😊
Firstly I want to say I initially started watching your channel because I was glad to see another woman record collector but what keeps me watching is how open, honest and real you are and the passion you have for music comes across loud and clear. I wish there were more women interested in hi-fi and record collecting, too, but alas, we are in the minority. Music is as important to me as eating, it's food for my soul. For the most part I haven't had any negative comments from men but my daughter's father-in-law looked shocked when I mentioned that I had been listening to Boston (their debut album is one of my favourite albums) and a local man who works on my make of turntable (he was changing my cart) wanted to know if it was my pride and joy as he hadn't met another female LP12 owner. He wasn't being nasty, though. He was genuinely interested. Love your channel and look forward to the next video.

I'm female and have been actively buying vinyl since the '70s. I also love equipment and reading up on turntables ect. I remember going to concerts in the '70s and '80s (we're in LA, CA, so lots of shows come through here). There were very few girls at Prog, Alternative concerts. I was one of a very limited number. At least until Punk Rock. I opened 3 record stores and was a promoter. Guys would come in and direct their conversations to my boyfriend/partner. Rude n ignorant. Recently I was at a local record store and said I had to hurry because I had an impatient husband waiting outside. Clerk laughed and said that was backwards and he never that before. This is all ridiculous to me. It's my money I'm spending and my interest. Partner couldn't be less interested. He thinks they well fall through the floor, lol. Carry on. Ignore stupid. Thanks for bringing this up.

Great haul you got there! That Sinatra 4 LP set looks really nice. My sister collects records like me and she is my vinyl buddy. Anyone can collect anything they want....boy the nerve of some people! We so often face a double standard. When I started collecting again (6 or 7 years ago) I was usually the only woman in the store. When I was a kid and collecting in the 70’s and 80’s my friends would maybe have a couple of records, but none of my female friends had any kind of collection beyond that. In thinking about the Black Friday RSD line this past Nov, I think I was one of two women in a line of about 40 people. Of course you’ll see many more women when there is a Taylor or Olivia release. I do feel women are more welcomed into the hobby these days, but I see some responses on this video that mention your looks. You don’t often (if ever) see a comment on a male TH-camr channel that says ‘you’re so handsome, I really enjoy watching your channel’. Thanks for making this video. It is important to keep voicing these things. Change doesn’t happen overnight. 😀
Women are definitely still in the minority even though we love music equally. I thankfully do see more women as we go along.. 🤗♥️ Men rarely if ever get comments based on their looks but I do know of some that have been bullied for weight and other issues which is really sad. Hi Melinda! Thanks for your channel and sharing your knowledge. I’m a woman and love vinyl collecting. Love spending hours sifting through bins checking out covers and reminiscing down memory lane. My husband is also interested in rummaging through record stores, vintage stores, record rooms and book stores looking for albums. We do a lot of road trippin and incorporate searching for unique record stores along the way. It’s been lots of fun!

As a woman who loves music and vinyl, I think time pressures keep me from getting as involved as I’d like to be. But I love your channel, Melinda, and I live vicariously through your videos! ❤❤I have a smallish collection but I’ll never get rid of my precious records!
One thing that I learned after all these years, is that this world is full of every type of person imaginable. You'll always have those few people that think "this is only for boys" or "this is only for girls", or worse, more hateful ways to express their personal feelings. But by taking the overwhelming minority viewpoint and shining a public spotlight on it, it makes it seem much larger and more important than it ever should've been. This is true today more than ever (with social media and our news media that is hyper focused on negative stories and division - as that sells very well).
I agree. I don't want to make this a big topic because in general, I have been treated very well. I do receive comments that guys would never receive and after 6 years of making videos, I thought I should bring this up to ask the question about why more women aren't into vinyl. I remember Beatlefests of the 80s-90s and the tsunami of women buying vinyl in the flea market. Thing is, after the conventions ended, they disappeared into the sunset and I wouldn’t see them until the following year. Through said Beatlefests, I made female friends who collect vinyl, I think your channel is phenomenal and hope you continue on just as you are. I love seeing your collection behind you and I always find myself trying to name all the albums by the color of the spine or box set etc. Fun! I look forward to checking in and seeing a fellow collector sharing the same passion. By the way, my Norwegian wife thinks I’m insane with collecting but that’s in a fun and positive way. We constantly crack jokes and laugh about it. She supports me just as I support her passion for making crafts, knitting etc (she’s extremely talented). I'm a retired musician and years ago they said girls were not drummers, bass players, guitar players, tuba players, trombone players. Now look at the musicians out there. Record collecting is for all men and women!! Love your channel. Keep up the good work!!
Hey Melinda, Beth here (Same me, different channel name😀), still making vinyl videos since 2017. I have always felt very welcome by those in the "vinyl community." I do remember many years ago, there was the controversy about women in the VC getting more VCLT. But other than that, I really have not dealt with much negativity. I make the videos I want to make. It keeps my creative juices flowing and I enjoy sharing my love and movies & music. You keep being your awesome self!
Hi Beth! I remember when it was basically you, Hannah and me. I started to say we were all treated fairly back then but remembered that drama regarding Hannah and receiving records. That's why I changed my comment to saying "my" experience was positive. What happened to her was very unfair. I rarely even feel the need to bring up the fact that I am a woman in a (mostly) men's hobby but a few comments have come up from time to time that I wanted to address. Like you said, this has been a great experience and most men are extremely cool. It's great to hear from you and I look back at our early years with fondness. 🥰Take care.
@MelindaMurphy it's neat to go to the record store now, and there are more women shoppers. I have a friend in the movie/Blu-ray community and he feels that women in general do not "collect" as much as men do (IE physical media). Which maybe the case in the film world. But I collect movies as well. I think it's more about the love of the hunt, no matter what it is. I love going to antique stores, flea markets, garage sales, and look for many things I collect including vinyl.
The number of your subscribers says it all and I`m seeing more and more woman getting on board. This is where I come to see and learn about the trade of music in all formats and as Abbey Devoe says about comments on the Internet ( your opinion matters ) Keep it up.👍
Melinda, I am SOOOO sorry you had to deal with that this week - my wife Kim is always getting the same kind of flack from "Star Wars" , heavy metal, and pro wrestling fans, most of whom are not even half her age and haven't been watching or listening nearly as long - heck, most of the Star Wars fans weren't even BORN when the original trilogy came out. I never understand people who act that way - it gives ALL men a bad name. It's good that you can just deflect it the way you do. You are one of the best, most knowledgable people in the VC - the fact that you're female doesn't even come into the conversation. Honestly...some people can be utter BOOBS. On the other topic, I took advantage of the UMusic 50% sale over the holdays, snagged some great under $20 bargains there - glad you had the same kind of luck with SOV! I have been a vinyl collector for 30 years, since I was 15, and I went from being basically totally on my own (in my peer group) as a teenager in the 90’s to it becoming a popular thing again, and one of the best changes I have seen over the years is more people getting involved. People of all shapes, sizes, preferences, ages, musical taste, male, female, or whatever. The one reason I was basically on my own (in my area) in the 90’s is that I couldn’t stand the extremely homogeneous dude fest that record collecting was at the time. I for one am very glad you are part of scene and I think you are remarkably positive force in this community, as are other creators that bring a fresh and unique perspective.
Mean people stink. Your channel is my favorite because of your taste in music, your enthusiasm and your welcoming demeanor. It's like sharing vinyl experiences with a friend instead of attending a lecture. Personally, I try to turn negative comments into a positive. Like recently, at work, I got to brag that I got a 4.0 in college. Granted, it was from girls rating me on a scale of 1-10, but still...
My husband and I love watching your channel. We have always loved your energy. Him and I will often go to record stores together and share vinyl we find with each other. It's become a great way for him and I to bond. I don't recall seeing any record that has said "for men only." I think it's for everyone that loves music. You keep doing what you do Melinda. Melinda, your channel is one of the best out there on vinyl period. I think about a lot of the “male” audiophile channels out there and they’re dominated by loud-mouthed narcissistic fools. Always love to hear your perspective! People who say those things are jealous and ignorant.
Hey Melinda, first off I love your shirt, there's a lot of ignorant people out there. I think you are popular because you are friendly, kind and a genuine person and you make these videos to connect with people with similar interests. I don't know anyone besides myself that listens to a physical medium of music anymore, most people listen to music in their car or on a little crappy sounding Bluetooth speaker. So I watch people like you men or women that I can relate to and feel a connection with. Keep doing what you enjoy doing and you make a lot of people happy.

Internet trolls are out there and there are all degrees of them. I’m a member of several online groups (a very active Springsteen group-Spring-Nuts), and a wheelchair users group-the Wheelies-I have PPMS so I’m a recent user-I’ve seen the best and worst of the trolls…ignore them, there’s so much positive energy out there. Your site and posts are so positive and filled with light. Please don’t be discouraged by the trolls and keep up your good work!
This topic really hits home. I've collected vinyl since I received my first LP for Christmas in 1964, Meet The Beatles. Please don't apologize for your love of vinyl Melinda! I collect every genre. And yes, there are people who respond negatively to my comments in the vinyl community but by and large people respond to me in a positive way. This topic can bring out the ugly in people.

I still miss the scent of taking a brand new record out of it's sleeve and putting it on the turntable for the first time. It's a very sensual experience, not to mention the beautiful cover art & the liner notes.

Hello Melinda, my daughter is an avid collecter, I brought her into the vinyl world many years ago. She has over 2000 at this time. I am down below 1000 having purged over the last few years. Still enjoy the hunt and finding the sales on line for new vinyl. As you well know the good used vinyl is not out there like it use to be, and prices are ridiculous. I am a child of the sixties and enjoy most all genres, not a fan of Hip Hop or Rap. I know you seem to like Jazz but I just can't get into it. I have tried but to no avail. Still a fan of CD'S have hundreds. Oh well, I enjoy your Channel and love seeing your husband from time to time. Y'all make a wonderful couple. I love music... PERIOD..So when I find a youtube channel that shares that same love for music as me, Im all in, male or female doesnt matter. When I first found your channel, I was like wow, what a breath of fresh air...My wife loves music, but is just not into the collecting aspect of it.

Everyone has a hobby or interest, so why shouldnt ladies collect records. I live alone so i have noone to argue with about my record collection. I please myself, im retired so just me to please and i buy what i want to buy, collect what i want to collect. Some comments are wrong, badly researched (if at all). Hello Melinda. I am subscribed to only two vinyl collecting channels, yours and Mazzy's. I am no longer very active in buying vinyl but I have a substantial collection. I also have a plentiful CD collection and only buy when something interesting intrigues me, like Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete did recently. I enjoy watching to see what records are grabbing attention. I grew up addicted to record buying and hanging out in record stores but now that I live in a small remote town I don't have any access to record stores so I like to watch videos of the people who carry a strong passion for the interest I have had. My ex-wife shared my enthusiasm for vinyl collecting and most of her friends just didn't get it being more interested in clothes and appearance - so I see why women just don't collect records like the rest of us - I'm always impressed with your knowledge and your entertainment Melinda - it's always heartfelt, honest and great to watch❤

We absolutely need more women in the Vinyl Community! I see a lot of young women showing off their vinyl hauls and suitcase turntables, but what about Rachel’s Ghost? I hear her channel is no more now, which means others will have to take up the mantle…But then, there’s The Omaha Introvert and young ladies who are also into the equipment side like Geraldine Hi Fi…I still see women in the record shops and at the record shows, but I absolutely wouldn’t mind seeing more of them come on board in our hobby…It’s just more fun to get different takes and opinions on record collecting from all ages, genders, races, etc. The more, the merrier, I say! The question is…How do we encourage that with the younger generation of females and just the younger generation in general? Maybe you have thoughts about that? Perfect for another video! In any case, your channel is must-watch viewing for me, Melinda, and partly because you’ve broached a lot of issues that other collectors are hesitant to dive into…And I have no problem spreading the word about a trusted voice in the Vinyl Community like yourself…At the same time, I wish there were more women as deep into the hobby as yourself…Still, maybe with you opening the door, other women will be encouraged to start their own channels like you did…One can only hope…
A lot of young women would do very well making videos. They grew up in this era of TH-cam so they would be a natural fit. My best guess is that this is such a niche hobby and a lot of TH-camrs that are young want to make a living doing this. Being a vinyl collector on TH-cam won't pay the bills. Lol. Trust me. I’m a female record collector from the UK and I recorded my first ever TH-cam video as part of the vinyl tag a month ago and have been hesitating putting it up because Im nervous about putting myself out there but you’ve inspired me to finish the minor edits and finally put it out there this week. With regards to female record collectors, I’m 42 and whenever I go to fairs, shops etc it’s so encouraging to see younger women ie late teens/early twenties taking it up as the largest female demographic of collectors., something I see reflected on You Tube My husband and I share a collection but I buy significantly more, perhaps because my taste is broader than us and I buy more second hand which is obviously for the most part cheaper. Anyway, I love your content and keep doing what you do so well x

Hi, first off I love your channel and keep up the good work. Secondly, this is my second round of collecting vinyl records due to my son becoming interested and I gave him a turntable for his 12th birthday. He is much older now so I have been hunting for vinyl records for the past 11 years. During that time I have seen a huge uptick in women / young females seeking out their grails to take home. I believe this is in part to artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Ray, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa to name a few. I hope they continue to buy vinyl records because we need as many people (both men and women) purchasing and enjoying records to keep the hobby thriving.

Hi Melinda! I'm female and have been collecting vinyl since the early 80s. I've only ever received positive comments from men about it. So if I were you, I wouldn't get upset about posts like that ;-) Even as a child, I loved going to record shops and stayed there for hours. Unfortunately, there are no such shops here anymore and I'm more or less dependent on ordering from Discogs or online shops. You have a great collection and I'm a bit jealous of your McIntosh in the background ;-) I also really enjoy exchanging ideas about vinyl. But they're only male collectors, so I was very surprised and happy when I discovered your channel here a few months ago. Since then, I've been a subscriber and I keep checking to see if there are any new videos from you :-) I saw a photo of you on Facebook recently when you were in Eric's shop ;-) Best wishes!

I can't find my previous comment so I will add that I think fewer women get into vinyl collecting due to having kids and being so busy. I'm female and I get it. I enjoy collecting records and have been collecting for over 50 years now. I had an issue with Sound of Vinyl where they held my money almost 2 months, then told me there was a delay then said that they could not send me the record I ordered. By that time it was out of print. I was so mad about that. I won't use them again. Glad you had good luck with them and got some great deals! ~ Nicola
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I did have to wait three weeks to receive my records but I knew they were probably covered up with orders. I don't normally buy from them and was a little reluctant. I wish it had worked out better for you! I agree that women have other interests and are very involved with their children. Hi Melinda, it is an important subject and approached it in a very classy way. I do see a lot of what you say, and I think it reflects a certain degree of of ignorance, lack of perspective and gatekeeping behavior from this type of people. You are right, there are not too many women running channels, but at the same time I see them as very successful, perhaps for being more authentic, less repetitive and not pretending to be who they are not. That is key for me. In the area where I live, I go to record shops every weekend for hours, and I'd say the crowd is almost half and half. Perhaps women are more into actually appreciating, listening, enjoying. Unlike men, who I perceive as being focused on accumulating records and comparing their trophies. Keep the great work. F

I'm glad you're in the vinyl community Melinda because I enjoy your videos and your friendly and positive personality too. In fact, and like your channel, some of the best VC videos being made are being made by females who love vinyl. I can think of at least a dozen channels in the VC I'm subscribed to that are female created. So please don't let some fool's comment or maybe some instigator's comment make you feel any different. There are way too many of those people out there in the VC that just want to rain on somebody else's enjoyment. Keep up the great work and happy hunting. Women that love music are the best. My favorite thing is actually relaxing just to your talking and really love the history and information you include with the albums.
It’s funny you bring it up because me and my wife went to a record show in CO and as we were walking around I told here “there sure seems to be a lot of women here” didn’t mean it in a negative way just not something you usually see. Then I went to two record stores in the same town the next day and they both had women working there too. Apparently CO kept most of the lady record collectors for themselves

Really sorry to hear about some of those awful comments Melinda. Looking back I subscribed to your channel because I really enjoyed your content and enthusiasm, not because you were a woman. I think more younger women are getting into vinyl these days and I think its a good thing. To answer your question, my girlfriend isn't interested in vinyl, thinking it is by and large a waste of money, but its mainly because she doesn't see the value in collecting things overrall. I am a woman vinyl and all physical media collector. I have a lot of CDs and I even love cassettes. I have always been into things that women were "not supposed" to do. I played sports as a kid, I majored in computer engineering in college, I went into the IT field to work and I also play drums. My husband is very supportive of my hobbies when he's not complaining about how loud the drums are! The comments that you are getting frankly don't surprise me at all. I would love to have a regular channel about music and drumming to share my passions. Keep it up!

I think a reason more men are involved in vinyl is the audio/electronic components involved. Stereotypically, over the decades women have been taught less about electronics than men. This is true for myself as a woman. My husband is not as interested in vinyl as myself, but supports my interest in the hobby. With this being said, to put together a system I was happy with listening to, it took me a significant amount of research and learning of that aspect of the hobby. In reality, I'm not as interested in the audio/electronic side of the hobby as much as the music/vinyl. If women were taught more about electronics as younger individuals just as men stereotypically are, women may be more interested in the hobby in general.
I'll put it this way, every time I watch your videos, I learn something; for example, I wouldn't have sought out my first Impex one-step without watching your reviews. Abigail Devoe is another channel I follow, for the same reason. Whether it's records or gear I seek out many sources. My wife doesn't love the physical part of collecting, poring over crates of dusty records, but she does love the music I find. Keep up the great channel!

Record collecting is for everyone absolutely including females of any age. Honestly, I don't know why men outnumber females collecting and listening to records. Though, as I already said, collecting and listening to records is for everyone including females. It's really great that you have stereo equipment as well Melinda. I really like your Black Sabbath shirt that you were wearing in this video. 👍 One other thing that I want to mention, even though it's not related to the Vinyl community. Great message....I've been collecting Elvis since 1960, a fan since I was 8 in 56....I've got them all right up to the last ones when cds came into effect.....I got into the cd world so have stuck with that....I have so many Elvis vinyl bootlegs too...got them all when they came out......got all the 45s and EPs too....also in my collection are hundreds of rock and roll vinyl singles and albums.....

Before my wife and I met, during our high school and college years, we both collected vinyl and my wife actually had more albums than I did. After we got married and had kids, we both slowed down, but did collect the occasional cassettes or CD’s. Since our kids are now out of the house and we are older, I have gone back to vinyl, but my wife has stayed with CD’s and now my vinyl collection dwarfs hers. I think the reason for that is I like to sit and make music listening an experience, while she is more likely to listen while she is in the car or doing other things, so vinyl is less conducive to that. Just one person’s experience.
My wife and I are 53 and 52 and have been married 2.5 decades. It it her passion and love of music that ignited my interest in being a serious vinyl collector. Many years ago I started collecting and restoring HiFi gear and over a few years we had a vintage stereo systems in every room and area of our Home except the bathrooms 😎. She totally encouraged it. About 10 years ago she said if we are going to have all these high end vintage systems we needed an equally impressive collection. She often if not usually with me on hunts and digs and just as often as I order online, she has regular deliveries to our door to add to our collection. We usually come straight in from our businesses and immediately start spinning. We have even taken vinyl “sick days” where we spent the entire day playing hooky from being dual business owners and playing records all day. Keep up the great work on your channel. I’ve never really thought about this, My partner is into fashion and sewing / creating dresses (and swing dancing). She loves music but doesn’t understand vinyl collecting. She’s good with tidal or Spotify. But she totally supports me, as do I support her. I will say I promised not to get above 1,000 records due to space constraints. I’m at 750, but I’ve been building up my tape collection in secret as we didn’t agree on a tape limit and they fit nicely in those Napa racks! I will say I do see lots more women at my local record shops over the past 5 years. TBH I don’t see people based on gender / race, but as humans, and it took this video to even think about this as being an ‘issue’.

We grew up in a generation where all we had was vinyl, 8-track and cassette tape. later on we got into CDs. I just want you to keep up the good work and I will always support your channel when you asked about spouses and collecting I am the only one that collects physical media. I have several vinyl, but I have more CD and DVD in my collection. That is what I collect. my wife sort of supports me most of the time she just rolls her eyes, but she’s never stopped me from collecting so I commend you and your husband just also wanna say don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing
I'm watching you from Greece. You don't need to apologize to anyone, there are malicious people everywhere. Probably the person who wrote the comment is bothered by the diversity in your musical preferences. Most of us men are usually stuck with one or two genres of music and some can't stomach a woman (with such kindness) presenting this diversity - and knowledge in music. It's our pleasure to have women with hobbies in our company, even if we differ in tastes, we all learn something new (if we have an open mind of course)! For me, I notice it when we are shopping together at a record store or show and I am the one flipping though and holding the records, men will go up to my husband and start a conversation about the records that I picked out and are holding. They assume he is the one that is buying and collecting the records. Thanks for the video, always appreciate your content!

Funny my girlfriend and I were talking about this 2 days ago. As a vinyl collector, my girlfriend has been asked why is she so into vinyl, which is seen as a "manly hobby." Amazingly enough, you mentioned you were accused of using your husband's salary in collecting your vinyl. My girlfriend has been accused of that as well, but hey, she's worked hard for her needs first, and her collection next. Never gifted her a vinyl yet (but thanks for the idea lol). Melinda, you're such a breath of fresh air for women who are often misunderstood just cause they collect vinyl. Isn't good music, and appreciation for the "art" in music for literally everyone?

The funny thing is, if wanted to buy music before the 80s, you had to buy vinyl. It wasn't looked down upon for anyone to buy records because everyone had to if you wanted music. Now all of sudden it's expected that women only stream music and only men can buy vinyl? So weird.

Firstly I want to say I initially started watching your channel because I was glad to see another woman record collector but what keeps me watching is how open, honest and real you are and the passion you have for music comes across loud and clear. I wish there were more women interested in hi-fi and record collecting, too, but alas, we are in the minority. Music is as important to me as eating, it's food for my soul. For the most part I haven't had any negative comments from men but my daughter's father-in-law looked shocked when I mentioned that I had been listening to Boston (their debut album is one of my favourite albums) and a local man who works on my make of turntable (he was changing my cart) wanted to know if it was my pride and joy as he hadn't met another female LP12 owner. He wasn't being nasty, though. He was genuinely interested. Love your channel and look forward to the next video.

I'm female and have been actively buying vinyl since the '70s. I also love equipment and reading up on turntables ect.
I remember going to concerts in the '70s and '80s (we're in LA, CA, so lots of shows come through here). There were very few girls at Prog, Alternative concerts. I was one of a very limited number. At least until Punk Rock.
I opened 3 record stores and was a promoter. Guys would come in and direct their conversations to my boyfriend/partner. Rude n ignorant.
Recently I was at a local record store and said I had to hurry because I had an impatient husband waiting outside. Clerk laughed and said that was backwards and he never that before.
This is all ridiculous to me. It's my money I'm spending and my interest. Partner couldn't be less interested. He thinks they well fall through the floor, lol.

We so often face a double standard. When I started collecting again (6 or 7 years ago) I was usually the only woman in the store.
When I was a kid and collecting in the 70’s and 80’s my friends would maybe have a couple of records, but none of my female friends had any kind of collection beyond that.
In thinking about the Black Friday RSD line this past Nov, I think I was one of two women in a line of about 40 people. Of course you’ll see many more women when there is a Taylor or Olivia release.
I do feel women are more welcomed into the hobby these days, but I see some responses on this video that mention your looks. You don’t often (if ever) see a comment on a male TH-camr channel that says ‘you’re so handsome, I really enjoy watching your channel’.

Women are definitely still in the minority even though we love music equally. I thankfully do see more women as we go along.. 🤗♥️ Men rarely if ever get comments based on their looks but I do know of some that have been bullied for weight and other issues which is really sad. Hi Melinda! Thanks for your channel and sharing your knowledge. I’m a woman and love vinyl collecting. Love spending hours sifting through bins checking out covers and reminiscing down memory lane. My husband is also interested in rummaging through record stores, vintage stores, record rooms and book stores looking for albums. We do a lot of road trippin and incorporate searching for unique record stores along the way. It’s been lots of fun!

As a woman who loves music and vinyl, I think time pressures keep me from getting as involved as I’d like to be. But I love your channel, Melinda, and I live vicariously through your videos! ❤❤I have a smallish collection but I’ll never get rid of my precious records!

One thing that I learned after all these years, is that this world is full of every type of person imaginable. You'll always have those few people that think "this is only for boys" or "this is only for girls", or worse, more hateful ways to express their personal feelings. But by taking the overwhelming minority viewpoint and shining a public spotlight on it, it makes it seem much larger and more important than it ever should've been. This is true today more than ever (with social media and our news media that is hyper focused on negative stories and division - as that sells very well).
I agree. I don't want to make this a big topic because in general, I have been treated very well. I do receive comments that guys would never receive and after 6 years of making videos, I thought I should bring this up to ask the question about why more women aren't into vinyl. I remember Beatlefests of the 80s-90s and the tsunami of women buying vinyl in the flea market. Thing is, after the conventions ended, they disappeared into the sunset and I wouldn’t see them until the following year. Through said Beatlefests, I made female friends who collect vinyl,
I think your channel is phenomenal and hope you continue on just as you are. I love seeing your collection behind you and I always find myself trying to name all the albums by the color of the spine or box set etc. Fun! I look forward to checking in and seeing a fellow collector sharing the same passion.
By the way, my Norwegian wife thinks I’m insane with collecting but that’s in a fun and positive way. We constantly crack jokes and laugh about it. She supports me just as I support her passion for making crafts, knitting etc (she’s extremely talented).

Hey Melinda, Beth here (Same me, different channel name😀), still making vinyl videos since 2017. I have always felt very welcome by those in the "vinyl community." I do remember many years ago, there was the controversy about women in the VC getting more VCLT. But other than that, I really have not dealt with much negativity. I make the videos I want to make. It keeps my creative juices flowing and I enjoy sharing my love and movies & music. You keep being your awesome self!
Hi Beth! I remember when it was basically you, Hannah and me. I started to say we were all treated fairly back then but remembered that drama regarding Hannah and receiving records. That's why I changed my comment to saying "my" experience was positive. What happened to her was very unfair.
I rarely even feel the need to bring up the fact that I am a woman in a (mostly) men's hobby but a few comments have come up from time to time that I wanted to address. Like you said, this has been a great experience and most men are extremely cool. It's great to hear from you and I look back at our early years with fondness. 🥰Take care.
@MelindaMurphy it's neat to go to the record store now, and there are more women shoppers. I have a friend in the movie/Blu-ray community and he feels that women in general do not "collect" as much as men do (IE physical media). Which maybe the case in the film world. But I collect movies as well. I think it's more about the love of the hunt, no matter what it is. I love going to antique stores, flea markets, garage sales, and look for many things I collect including vinyl.
The number of your subscribers says it all and I`m seeing more and more woman getting on board. This is where I come to see and learn about the trade of music in all formats and as Abbey Devoe says about comments on the Internet ( your opinion matters ) Keep it up.👍

Melinda, I am SOOOO sorry you had to deal with that this week - my wife Kim is always getting the same kind of flack from "Star Wars" , heavy metal, and pro wrestling fans, most of whom are not even half her age and haven't been watching or listening nearly as long - heck, most of the Star Wars fans weren't even BORN when the original trilogy came out. I never understand people who act that way - it gives ALL men a bad name. It's good that you can just deflect it the way you do. You are one of the best, most knowledgable people in the VC - the fact that you're female doesn't even come into the conversation. Honestly...some people can be utter BOOBS. On the other topic, I took advantage of the UMusic 50% sale over the holdays, snagged some great under $20 bargains there - glad you had the same kind of luck with SOV! I have been a vinyl collector for 30 years, since I was 15, and I went from being basically totally on my own (in my peer group) as a teenager in the 90’s to it becoming a popular thing again, and one of the best changes I have seen over the years is more people getting involved. People of all shapes, sizes, preferences, ages, musical taste, male, female, or whatever. The one reason I was basically on my own (in my area) in the 90’s is that I couldn’t stand the extremely homogeneous dude fest that record collecting was at the time. I for one am very glad you are part of scene and I think you are remarkably positive force in this community, as are other creators that bring a fresh and unique perspective.
Mean people stink. Your channel is my favorite because of your taste in music, your enthusiasm and your welcoming demeanor. It's like sharing vinyl experiences with a friend instead of attending a lecture. Personally, I try to turn negative comments into a positive. Like recently, at work, I got to brag that I got a 4.0 in college. Granted, it was from girls rating me on a scale of 1-10, but still...

Hey Melinda, first off I love your shirt, there's a lot of ignorant people out there. I think you are popular because you are friendly, kind and a genuine person and you make these videos to connect with people with similar interests. I don't know anyone besides myself that listens to a physical medium of music anymore, most people listen to music in their car or on a little crappy sounding Bluetooth speaker. So I watch people like you men or women that I can relate to and feel a connection with. Keep doing what you enjoy doing and you make a lot of people happy.

Internet trolls are out there and there are all degrees of them. I’m a member of several online groups (a very active Springsteen group-Spring-Nuts), and a wheelchair users group-the Wheelies-I have PPMS so I’m a recent user-I’ve seen the best and worst of the trolls…ignore them, there’s so much positive energy out there. Your site and posts are so positive and filled with light. Please don’t be discouraged by the trolls and keep up your good work!

This topic really hits home. I've collected vinyl since I received my first LP for Christmas in 1964, Meet The Beatles.
Please don't apologize for your love of vinyl Melinda! I collect every genre. And yes, there are people who respond negatively to my comments in the vinyl community but by and large people respond to me in a positive way. This topic can bring out the ugly in people.

I still miss the scent of taking a brand new record out of it's sleeve and putting it on the turntable for the first time. It's a very sensual experience, not to mention the beautiful cover art & the liner notes.

Hello Melinda, my daughter is an avid collecter, I brought her into the vinyl world many years ago. She has over 2000 at this time. I am down below 1000 having purged over the last few years. Still enjoy the hunt and finding the sales on line for new vinyl. As you well know the good used vinyl is not out there like it use to be, and prices are ridiculous. I am a child of the sixties and enjoy most all genres, not a fan of Hip Hop or Rap. I know you seem to like Jazz but I just can't get into it. I have tried but to no avail. Still a fan of CD'S have hundreds. Oh well, I enjoy your Channel and love seeing your husband from time to time. Y'all make a wonderful couple. I have 25 Sinatra records on vinyl, in addition to several CDs and flac files. One of my all-time favorite artists for sure. His voice is so familiar to me having listened to him all my life since the 1960's.

Everyone has a hobby or interest, so why shouldnt ladies collect records. I live alone so i have noone to argue with about my record collection. I please myself, im retired so just me to please and i buy what i want to buy, collect what i want to collect. Some comments are wrong, badly researched (if at all). Hello Melinda. I am subscribed to only two vinyl collecting channels, yours and Mazzy's. I am no longer very active in buying vinyl but I have a substantial collection. I also have a plentiful CD collection and only buy when something interesting intrigues me, like Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete did recently. I enjoy watching to see what records are grabbing attention. I grew up addicted to record buying and hanging out in record stores but now that I live in a small remote town I don't have any access to record stores so I like to watch videos of the people who carry a strong passion for the interest I have had. Wow, I’ve always admired your enthusiasm in vinyl collecting. In the early 80’s I was a major vinyl collector and can totally relate to you love for it. I never had anyone truly understand the feeling of collecting and finding treasures now and then. I am really surprised someone would say that to you.

We absolutely need more women in the Vinyl Community! I see a lot of young women showing off their vinyl hauls and suitcase turntables, but what about Rachel’s Ghost? I hear her channel is no more now, which means others will have to take up the mantle…But then, there’s The Omaha Introvert and young ladies who are also into the equipment side like Geraldine Hi Fi…I still see women in the record shops and at the record shows, but I absolutely wouldn’t mind seeing more of them come on board in our hobby…It’s just more fun to get different takes and opinions on record collecting from all ages, genders, races, etc. The more, the merrier, I say! The question is…How do we encourage that with the younger generation of females and just the younger generation in general? Maybe you have thoughts about that? Perfect for another video! In any case, your channel is must-watch viewing for me, Melinda, and partly because you’ve broached a lot of issues that other collectors are hesitant to dive into…And I have no problem spreading the word about a trusted voice in the Vinyl Community like yourself…At the same time, I wish there were more women as deep into the hobby as yourself…Still, maybe with you opening the door, other women will be encouraged to start their own channels like you did…One can only hope…
A lot of young women would do very well making videos. They grew up in this era of TH-cam so they would be a natural fit. My best guess is that this is such a niche hobby and a lot of TH-camrs that are young want to make a living doing this. Being a vinyl collector on TH-cam won't pay the bills. Lol. Trust me. I’m a female record collector from the UK and I recorded my first ever TH-cam video as part of the vinyl tag a month ago and have been hesitating putting it up because Im nervous about putting myself out there but you’ve inspired me to finish the minor edits and finally put it out there this week.
With regards to female record collectors, I’m 42 and whenever I go to fairs, shops etc it’s so encouraging to see younger women ie late teens/early twenties taking it up as the largest female demographic of collectors., something I see reflected on You Tube
My husband and I share a collection but I buy significantly more, perhaps because my taste is broader than us and I buy more second hand which is obviously for the most part cheaper.

Hi, first off I love your channel and keep up the good work.
Secondly, this is my second round of collecting vinyl records due to my son becoming interested and I gave him a turntable for his 12th birthday. He is much older now so I have been hunting for vinyl records for the past 11 years. During that time I have seen a huge uptick in women / young females seeking out their grails to take home. I believe this is in part to artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Ray, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa to name a few. I hope they continue to buy vinyl records because we need as many people (both men and women) purchasing and enjoying records to keep the hobby thriving.

Hi Melinda! I'm female and have been collecting vinyl since the early 80s. I've only ever received positive comments from men about it. So if I were you, I wouldn't get upset about posts like that ;-) Even as a child, I loved going to record shops and stayed there for hours. Unfortunately, there are no such shops here anymore and I'm more or less dependent on ordering from Discogs or online shops. You have a great collection and I'm a bit jealous of your McIntosh in the background ;-) I also really enjoy exchanging ideas about vinyl. But they're only male collectors, so I was very surprised and happy when I discovered your channel here a few months ago. Since then, I've been a subscriber and I keep checking to see if there are any new videos from you :-) I saw a photo of you on Facebook recently when you were in Eric's shop ;-) Best wishes!

I can't find my previous comment so I will add that I think fewer women get into vinyl collecting due to having kids and being so busy. I'm female and I get it. I enjoy collecting records and have been collecting for over 50 years now.
I had an issue with Sound of Vinyl where they held my money almost 2 months, then told me there was a delay then said that they could not send me the record I ordered. By that time it was out of print. I was so mad about that. I won't use them again. Glad you had good luck with them and got some great deals! ~ Nicola
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I did have to wait three weeks to receive my records but I knew they were probably covered up with orders. I don't normally buy from them and was a little reluctant. I wish it had worked out better for you!

Hi Melinda, it is an important subject and approached it in a very classy way. I do see a lot of what you say, and I think it reflects a certain degree of of ignorance, lack of perspective and gatekeeping behavior from this type of people. You are right, there are not too many women running channels, but at the same time I see them as very successful, perhaps for being more authentic, less repetitive and not pretending to be who they are not. That is key for me. In the area where I live, I go to record shops every weekend for hours, and I'd say the crowd is almost half and half. Perhaps women are more into actually appreciating, listening, enjoying. Unlike men, who I perceive as being focused on accumulating records and comparing their trophies. Keep the great work. F

I'm glad you're in the vinyl community Melinda because I enjoy your videos and your friendly and positive personality too. In fact, and like your channel, some of the best VC videos being made are being made by females who love vinyl. I can think of at least a dozen channels in the VC I'm subscribed to that are female created. So please don't let some fool's comment or maybe some instigator's comment make you feel any different. It’s funny you bring it up because me and my wife went to a record show in CO and as we were walking around I told here “there sure seems to be a lot of women here” didn’t mean it in a negative way just not something you usually see. Then I went to two record stores in the same town the next day and they both had women working there too. Apparently CO kept most of the lady record collectors for themselves

Really sorry to hear about some of those awful comments Melinda. Looking back I subscribed to your channel because I really enjoyed your content and enthusiasm, not because you were a woman. I think more younger women are getting into vinyl these days and I think its a good thing. To answer your question, my girlfriend isn't interested in vinyl, thinking it is by and large a waste of money, but its mainly because she doesn't see the value in collecting things overrall. I am a woman vinyl and all physical media collector. I have a lot of CDs and I even love cassettes. I have always been into things that women were "not supposed" to do. I played sports as a kid, I majored in computer engineering in college, I went into the IT field to work and I also play drums. My husband is very supportive of my hobbies when he's not complaining about how loud the drums are! The comments that you are getting frankly don't surprise me at all. I would love to have a regular channel about music and drumming to share my passions. Keep it up!

I think a reason more men are involved in vinyl is the audio/electronic components involved. Stereotypically, over the decades women have been taught less about electronics than men. This is true for myself as a woman. My husband is not as interested in vinyl as myself, but supports my interest in the hobby. With this being said, to put together a system I was happy with listening to, it took me a significant amount of research and learning of that aspect of the hobby. In reality, I'm not as interested in the audio/electronic side of the hobby as much as the music/vinyl. If women were taught more about electronics as younger individuals just as men stereotypically are, women may be more interested in the hobby in general.

I'll put it this way, every time I watch your videos, I learn something; for example, I wouldn't have sought out my first Impex one-step without watching your reviews. Abigail Devoe is another channel I follow, for the same reason. Whether it's records or gear I seek out many sources. My wife doesn't love the physical part of collecting, poring over crates of dusty records, but she does love the music I find. Keep up the great channel!

Record collecting is for everyone absolutely including females of any age. Honestly, I don't know why men outnumber females collecting and listening to records. Though, as I already said, collecting and listening to records is for everyone including females. It's really great that you have stereo equipment as well Melinda. I really like your Black Sabbath shirt that you were wearing in this video. 👍 One other thing that I want to mention, even though it's not related to the Vinyl community. Great message....I've been collecting Elvis since 1960, a fan since I was 8 in 56....I've got them all right up to the last ones when cds came into effect.....I got into the cd world so have stuck with that....I have so many Elvis vinyl bootlegs too...got them all when they came out......got all the 45s and EPs too....also in my collection are hundreds of rock and roll vinyl singles and albums.....

Before my wife and I met, during our high school and college years, we both collected vinyl and my wife actually had more albums than I did. After we got married and had kids, we both slowed down, but did collect the occasional cassettes or CD’s. Since our kids are now out of the house and we are older, I have gone back to vinyl, but my wife has stayed with CD’s and now my vinyl collection dwarfs hers. I think the reason for that is I like to sit and make music listening an experience, while she is more likely to listen while she is in the car or doing other things, so vinyl is less conducive to that. Just one person’s experience.
My wife and I are 53 and 52 and have been married 2.5 decades. It it her passion and love of music that ignited my interest in being a serious vinyl collector. Many years ago I started collecting and restoring HiFi gear and over a few years we had a vintage stereo systems in every room and area of our Home except the bathrooms 😎. She totally encouraged it. About 10 years ago she said if we are going to have all these high end vintage systems we needed an equally impressive collection. She often if not usually with me on hunts and digs and just as often as I order online, she has regular deliveries to our door to add to our collection. We usually come straight in from our businesses and immediately start spinning. We have even taken vinyl “sick days” where we spent the entire day playing hooky from being dual business owners and playing records all day.

I’ve never really thought about this, My partner is into fashion and sewing / creating dresses (and swing dancing). She loves music but doesn’t understand vinyl collecting. She’s good with tidal or Spotify. But she totally supports me, as do I support her. I will say I promised not to get above 1,000 records due to space constraints. I’m at 750, but I’ve been building up my tape collection in secret as we didn’t agree on a tape limit and they fit nicely in those Napa racks! I will say I do see lots more women at my local record shops over the past 5 years. TBH I don’t see people based on gender / race, but as humans, and it took this video to even think about this as being an ‘issue’.
Hello Melinda, I just wanna say I love your videos who cares what others think about you collecting vinyl because you’re a woman I think it’s amazing. We grew up in a generation where all we had was vinyl, 8-track and cassette tape. later on we got into CDs. I just want you to keep up the good work and I will always support your channel when you asked about spouses and collecting I am the only one that collects physical media. I have several vinyl, but I have more CD and DVD in my collection. That is what I collect. my wife sort of supports me most of the time she just rolls her eyes, but she’s never stopped me from collecting so I commend you and your husband just also wanna say don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing

You don't need to apologize to anyone, there are malicious people everywhere. Probably the person who wrote the comment is bothered by the diversity in your musical preferences. Most of us men are usually stuck with one or two genres of music and some can't stomach a woman (with such kindness) presenting this diversity - and knowledge in music. It's our pleasure to have women with hobbies in our company, even if we differ in tastes, we all learn something new (if we have an open mind of course)!
