It may be pointless for the big boy to roll in hopes of getting restored to operation and not getting rust welded to the rails but i give the museum props for exercising the equipment. Glad to see it can still move!

4018 is the nearest big boy to me, my dad has tried every summer to take me to see this one but never has, I hope to see 4014 on its fall excursion through Hempstead
I took my teen daughter to see 4014 in hempstead..(took her out of school early to go lol) We live in Magnolia texas. It was life changing. You cannot describe to someone how the earth literally shakes like an earthquake when it gets close to you. We will be going again to see it in the fall again

If it's UP's, I wonder if 4014 might pass thru, and we could get a side-by-side of the two Big Boys when he visits later this month. Something we haven't seen in a while. @@Pinboy50 It’s been undergoing overhaul, as well as federally mandated maintenance. Ed did say recently that it passed its boiler certification, and it seems that they’re planning to bring it back out next year.
While it would be pretty cool if they did, I highly doubt that that no. 4018 will return to operational status due to the fact that the rods connecting the drivers to the cylinders have been cut, as well as the fact that this locomotive has been out of service since the 1960’s

Is there a plan to restore 4018 to operation? We have Big Boy 4006 in static unsheltered display at the National Transportation Museum in STL. I first saw him there almost 70 years ago when I was a kid. So sad to see him slowly rusting away.
There are no plans to restore any big boy to operation. The last boy one running is 4014. The 4006 in St. Louis just got a cosmetic restoration and looks pretty good

Knowing I was born in 1999, I never got to see steam locomotives run the rails except when I lived in Colorado until 2004 and went on Durango and silverton and when I went to Thomas thing and rode the express ride of him. Ik diesels are more efficient and all but I would’ve loved to see way more steam locomotives run the rails before diesels took over
If you look at the crosshead on the leading set of drivers, you can see part of the piston rod sticking out. My heart sank a bit; it looks as though they just cut through the rod, so they could get the wheels to turn. Do correct me if I’m wrong, but if they did butcher it, that’s unfortunate.
B.B. 4017 is in the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin in Ashwaubenon since July 4 1961. When the large McCormick Pavillion was built in 1972 BB 4017 was pushed inside for the winter then pulled in front for the summer. But sadly since 2001 when the newest managers built the New Lenfestey Reception Center the 4017 was repainted Bkack with white wall drivers; but shoved inside and the rest of the Lenfestey Center was built up around 4017, and the British A4 60008 Eisenhower 4-6-2 Pacific, and GG1 P.RR. 4800, and others; but sadly the Front tracks are ripped off, with the new Gift shop and offices built in front of 4017.....thus sadly 4017 is Trapped inside!!!!!...until somebody else can ripp out the walls, and set 4017 FREE AGAIN AT LAST!!!!! My heart was beating fast. My blood pressure was high. Then i started to lose my energy. When i try to walk my legs felt heavy and my stamina went very bad also. Then i started losing my sleep. Eventually i crashed a little into the road and asked God and Jesus to help. Finally I started to run in the toilet all the time too. Then the very awful thing came. I lost fastly almost all my ability to sleep and I started to loose my weight. Blood came out of my nose and I started to lost my hairs too. I visit hospitals and private hospitals too but they couldn't help me. They gave me beta blockers to my heart and finally medicine to my high blood pressure too. I wanted to get inside the hospital but they refused to take me in. In private hospitals they couldn't understand why they dont take me in the main hospital. Finally I contact to other country and I asked can you take me in the hospital. Then they asked where are you here? I told im in the other country and I need a help. But they told me we cant take you in because you dont live here. So I can tell you money didnt help me. Later I told my family im gonna die very soon because I felt completely awful. Finally I asked again God to help me. Then finally my Mother saw one Angel vision and three Jesus vision. After that it took few days and my health came back. I got my sleeping back and my heart started to calm down. I started to gain weight. Blood pressure went back to normal and finally I got all my hairs back. For the boy/girl discussion, complex machinery is traditionally referred to in the feminine form. The only items I know of not referred to in this way are Russian ships for some reason. They are referred to as masculine. Planes, trains, automobiles, ships, generators, grills, stoves….if it’s complex, it’s referred to as she. It’s a sign of affection as well as tradition. We all love our mothers after all.
I love the "whitewall" wheels, I personally think they make the locomotive much more aesthetically pleasing and wish they'd do it with 4014.

I can't imagine that any rods have been "cut". All 4 eccentric rods have been disconnected to prevent valve movement, however.
