It's an awkward possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. Dark thought, but it also may explain why nothing could be found out about him in later years and he never resurfaced
Not to mention that prior to Tokyo a few years ago, this was the first Summer Olympics to take place in a common year, instead of a leap year. And that Great Britain was the only other nation besides host France to have a roster of athletes in the triple digits. Even the United States, Austria and Germany only had between 75 and 78 athletes in their respective rosters. This edition was also the first Olympics to feature competitors from Asia, even though there was only one athlete who was a sprinter from British India, and one fencer from Iran (known then as Persia). The former of these nations wouldn't appear at the Olympics again until the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, while it would be 48 years before Iran would appear again at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Which was also the first Summer Olympics since before World War II.
Would be interesting if the cars were basically front-engine versions of modern F1 or Indy cars, which, depending on chassis and suspension, could run a wide variety of tracks and surfaces (circuits, paved ovals, dirt ovals, off-road tracks, rally stages, hillclimbs, dragstrips, etc.). The thought of Kyle Larson and Max Verstappen racing against each other in a motorsport omnium of sorts would be an interesting thought, to say the least.
The scheduling of a preliminary race on a Sunday was a pivotal event in the movie Chariots of Fire. One of the two top competitors was a devout Christian and he wouldn't run on a Sunday. If he didn't run he wouldn't qualify for the Olympic race.
Another weird thing about the 1900 Paris Olympics was that the "running track" (more like a path in a field with trees than an actual running track) was 500 meters long (every other Olympic running track was/is 400 meters long).
The 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens, that nowadays IOC does not recoginize as official Olympic event, were much more like the Olympic Games as we currently know than the official 1900, 1904 and 1908 Games: they had an Olympic Village, a Closing Ceremony, country flags were raised at medal ceremonies, the athletes were registred to participate through their NOC and they only lasted 10 days.
There was cannon shooting events in 1900, life-saving events (a fire-fighting one, a surface water rescue one, and one meant to imitate war-time conditions, where people had to carry a stretcher as smoothly as possible on an obstacle course), pigeon-racing events (which were apparently really popular with the public, so they organised Olympic events in the early mornings, so that the birds could fly long distances before dusk, and some just for fun in the afternoon, when there were the most visitors, with local birds who were promptly home)...
i really don't get why obstacle swimming isn't olympic anymore. they do it in military pentathlon and at the lifesaving championships and it's a pretty good spectator sport
Absolutely, it's one of those ones they took out because it didn't work at one games at one point in time, but I feel like it should be revisited because it could be fantastic
Was the first time women were allowed to compete but as exibition sports like gymnastics to convince men even Pierre!!!! One fun fact nobody knows this is the first time ever that México won its first medal a bronze in polo!!! 🎉🇲🇽
The modern Olympics didn’t start until 1896. Why would it be surprising that they didn’t know they were competing in they Olympics when the Olympics were at the World’s Fair? No many people knew what the modern Olympics were compared to the World’s Fair which was well known at the time.
Yes, that's exactly the point I'm making in the video, the Olympics were so overshadowed by the events around them that folks didn't know they were in the Olympics. That seems remarkable in hindsight, hence it's inclusion in the video as being something of note
Ok, so: I just comented on another video about the 10 Inscredible sports, no longer in the Olympic Games, joking about the Olympic Croquet players along with the score keeper and the single paying visitor just kinda akwardly going their seperate ways after the medals where handed, not knowing where to go from there: You wanna tell me there is a fair chance that might as well could have happened, since all 10 athletes just found out they where competing in the Olympics AFTER the event was done?! And they also where just handed some price money too (because honestly: There's no way someone actually made a trophy for that specific event) to make it even more akward? That's hilarious. Just like the (I assume) very posh Equatrianists(?) are literally being gifted art works for winning as well as having FUCKING BALLOONING? Dude, I wish I could travel back to 1900's paris for 5 months to see the absolut insanity unfold in front of me. Honestly, words can't descripe how much this video made me just frolock from the madness man and it always one upped itself the longer I watched this video, this was pure entertainment
I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! And I'd be right there with you, time traveling back to watch the insanity that was these Olympic games would be a dream come true. Or nightmare, depending on how you look at it lol
Given that the 1900 Olympics were only the second Olympiad of the Modern Era, and still a "young" event, the derogative comments comparing them to what we are used to with the Olympic games of today are not only uninformed, they are simply stupid. Bits of illustrative information here and there but still a terrible video.
The whole point of the video is to compare the 1900 Olympics to the modern Olympics, I don't see how making that comparison is uninformed. Quite the opposite, I had to inform myself of both the 1900 games and the modern games and their differences in order to make the comparison. You even say it has bits of illustrative information, so it has to be at least partially informed by your own admission. So I think when you say it's uninformed, you actually mean to say that you just disagree with me. Which is fine, lots of room for debate here. So is it a terrible video because of bad production quality? Poor scripting? Visuals not on point? Or is it just that it's terrible because you disagree with my point of view?
Wasn't dissing it at all, Sunday is important to many, but unimportant to many others. I said "I guess" because a) I am not these athletes, so I can't confirm or deny what is important or not to them, and b) because it's been completely forgotten about in modern times as the you never hear about these objections anymore from Olympic athletes. But you are entitled to your opinion and I respect your choice, I appreciate you checking out the videos and leaving your thoughts
1900 was also the only Olympics to date to have included Cricket. Only the French and British had teams there, and the Brits unsurprisingly won.
Shocker lol
But looks like cricket is finally coming back to the Olympics, long overdue!
The French team was basically made up of ex-pat Brits any way.
It is coming back to in LA 2028.
Now with more countries: GBR, IND, AUS, PAK, NZL, SRI.
Good amount of countries.
I can't help but think that a 7 to 10 year old French boy in 1900 is likely to have ended up in a muddy trench of WWI.
It's an awkward possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. Dark thought, but it also may explain why nothing could be found out about him in later years and he never resurfaced
There's a non-zero chance that he's buried under the Arc de Triomphe as the Unknown Soldier.

At those 1948 olympics México won its first gold medals in equestrian both team and invidual 🎉🇲🇽

BRING MOTOR RACING BACK TO THE OLYMPICS
A few F1 folks have brought that up. I don't think the IOC are fans of motorized events unfortunately

I forgot all about that in Chariots of Fire!
@@voxathleticaMaybe because it was in 1924 and not in 1900 ?
BUT THAT'S because there was NO TV.
The Olympics today are a media event.
Totally agree, they very much are. More entertainment than sport at times if you ask me

LOL yup, that's pretty much on brand for these games
it'd be nice if you made a series of this and did videos on all the olympics up to the present.
I've certainly done a few already, specifically a few of the oldest ones. Great idea on the series, I think I can make that happen!

Totally agree and great point. In fact, you must be a mind reader because I'm working on a video about it now :)
There are some events now that seem really weird to me. I'd rather have ballooning.
Imagine ballooning with modern tech, it would be wild. Forget the Olympics, that should be its own stand-alone spectator sport

Son: Hey Dad, that archery competition you won in Paris in 1900 was an Olympic event!
Dad (on deathbed): It was?! Oh, my God, I can't believe-- *dies*
LOLOLOLOL there's a non-zero chance that happened

Breakdancing was a stupid addition this year. I hope they never do that again.
Word is it won't be coming back in LA 2028, but that's a long way away, so who knows
Okay, you gotta do the 1906 “Olympic” Intercalated Games.
