It sounds like an excuse but this kinda writing really does just sound better in Japanese, coming from someone who speaks it. It doesn't help that the translation work and the voice acting are both very clumsy.

Nomura actually had no writing credit on this game, if you can believe it. The voices and the timing really throw things off further too, make the already sort of disconnected dialogue there seem even more so.
I feel like most of the dumb bullshit in the Compilation of FF7 that people tend to blame on Nomura probably came from Kazushige Nojima. Nomura was more of an idea and general concepts guy, but Nojima was the scenario writer in charge of the execution which is where a lot of it fell on its face.
@FenixSeraph Both of them are masters at making the most basic interactions awkward and the most simple of plots convoluted as all hell. Put them together and you get FFVII Remake, the pinnacle of throwing just the _most_ into a story without thinking about the endeavor wholistically.

Went back and rewatched Vinny react to this scene in the OG version and... yeah, the voice acting does sound better there than here, despite Angeal's monotonous delivery (which might have been what they were going for, he's so dry to compare to Zack's overzealous "puppy-like" nature/delivery).

I have like 1k hours in XIV and about halfway though I couldn't fucking take it anymore, and just turned on the Japanese voices and wallowed in my ignorance for the quality of the voice acting and just started speed reading text boxes, and yes there is some of this in XIV (although not anywhere as pronounced this) also they have English accents instead.

It creates this bizarre dissonance that's weirdly fascinating to listen to. Like with the Star Wars Prequels, it doesn't matter how good of an actor you are, sufficiently bad dialog can never be saved.

Makes no sense to me why its just the English cast that got a complete recast.

I mean, I think I get what they were trying to go for. It ties back to Angeal's constant preaching about dreams and honor, him not using his family's sword symbolizing those beliefs, the existential question of whether only humans are capable of having goals and dreams, Angeal forcing Zack to kill him to ultimately pass on his sword/dreams to Zack. Even all the angel talk actually amounts to something pretty emotional by the very last scene in the game with Zack reaching out. But man, I have to agree that those lines are so melodramatic in how they're written and delivered that the whole thing feels more like an impromptu theater play by first year philosophy students.
I think the original voice actor presented the original script far better. Yeah it can be cheesy at times but who cares it’s a Japanese video game from 2007 just have fun with it. I personally loved this story and how they built Zack as a character and how they explored more into the lore from the FF7 universe.
I just adore the combination of melodramatic jrpg writing with English voice actors who are just there for the money. Always works. Flawlessly. Never a wet fart.

Most bad voice acting comes down to direction. I can almost guarantee the actors were told to speak this way to convey that 2000s cheese

I mean, I think I get what they were trying to go for. It ties back to Angeal's constant preaching about dreams and honor, him not using his family's sword symbolizing those beliefs, the existential question of whether only humans are capable of having goals and dreams, Angeal forcing Zack to kill him to ultimately pass on his sword/dreams to Zack. Even all the angel talk actually amounts to something pretty emotional by the very last scene in the game with Zack reaching out.
But man, I have to agree that those lines are so melodramatic in how they're written and delivered that the whole thing feels more like an impromptu theater play by first year philosophy students.

I think the original voice actor presented the original script far better. Yeah it can be cheesy at times but who cares it’s a Japanese video game from 2007 just have fun with it. I personally loved this story and how they built Zack as a character and how they explored more into the lore from the FF7 universe.
