- We're moving back home after 10 years in NYC to fix up a 1914 schoolhouse and turn it into a modern home! You can see more photos + story over on our IG. :) / schoolhousehomestead
You most definitely need a dumbwaiter for your groceries. I’m 57 an can tell you, there isn’t anything much worse than trying to carry groceries out of you trunk, up the stairs, over and over again. Did I expect to be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis? Nope, but this is the kind of things that life throws your way. Do yourselves a favor…where ever you can plan for your old age…do it!
100% this. I'm 43 and I've been diagnosed with RA for ten years. The last 12months my body has been in constant pain and moving groceries is one of the biggest challenges.
I was diagnosed with RA at 24 and I def agree, anything you can do to make bringing in groceries easier will be a blessing!
I believe building codes don't allow those anymore, because in a fire they act as a flue and the fire spreads faster.
But I can totally see investing in one of those indoor elevators for homes.
Great idea! In South Africa, where I was born, they had them there in the old buildings, and they were very handy. So kudos to you for suggesting one!! One thing I would do with so much space, is build in secret doors to secret rooms and slides and staircases into rooms for the kids and grandkids to have fun with.
64 here and I’m selling my house because of a full 2 story house. I cannot do it by myself anymore!
I love it!
Instead of knocking down old homes and schools they should be updated and restored!
I agree!!! I’d love to buy an old church or school to make into our home!
Y’all have to have money or already be a construction . Worker
I have updated and saved 5 homes that needed love. Banks had issues lending on each one - Last one was done and passed for a VA loan. The VA loans are tough on the approval process for the property too.
There are SO many homeless people in the U.S.A. and Canada. It is SO sad that the Government doesn't make ANY effort to find homes and shelter for them. We should be helping our OWN country before helping others overseas. Old schools can become apartments for the homeless after being renovated. I am not talking about your school but others that are just sitting and being abandoned.
My parents live about 3 minutes from you. We were so excited that someone bought it who would restore it!!! I cant wait to see it all finished. Good luck!!!
The elementary school I attended was recently torn down. When I visit the area and drive by where it was, it always saddens me. Thank you restoring this one.
I would love to see a floor plan of what it looked like before and what it is like now. This is amazing!
I love your comments calling the Indiana landscape beautiful. I meet so many people that think this state is boring but I love the view of Indiana fields and farmland ❤
Indiana sunsets are the best! After being away for so long you really realize how special it is.
That is until the land gets developed! We “had” so many open agricultural fields and land in our state and then tourism and greed happens. Now many, many of those open landscapes of beauty are being sold off to developers who are building homes, condos or apartments!! Such a sad thing to see. I hope the citizens of Indiana push against this nonsense….. good luck and you have a beautiful piece of property!
That's because it IS kind of boring there lol. But after you move away to a huge city (NYC in their case, Seattle in mine) you come to realize that's a blessing. Boring is also very peaceful; and comes with a lack of gunshots, police sirens, high crime, and homeless encampments. I am looking forward to moving back home and being able to sit on a porch and have a quiet evening and watch the lightning bugs and the gentle sway of the corn and enjoy the fresh air.
What a beautiful place, you should get yourself a metal detector and find out where the old playground used to be..if the place opened in 1913 or 14, you can bet there's some coins from the 1800's era lost there... That would probably be a good hobby for your dad...
That place is gorgeous and I'm really excited for you to have a place like that.. it's going to be a beautiful place when you're done...
I too live in Indiana. Thank you for preserving its quaintness!
I just read an article about this, and I needed to know more! I am so excited you have this on TH-cam. We just started renting an old, approx 8,000 sq ft farmhouse (total sq ft), which also was split into two homes. The original 'bones' (whatever part that is exactly), was used as a makeshift hospital during the Civil War. This has given me this brand new interest. I am like a kid with excitement over seeing the process of your wonderful renovation lol. You must be thrilled. I'm looking forward to watching the current videos and hope you continue the updates. Have FUN!
Thank you so much!! Your house sounds so fascinating too, especially the hospital part!!
I a bit surprised that there is no gym. I grew up in Indiana in a small farming town. We had a school similar to yours that had a gym. Basketball is king in Indiana. Our old school was destroyed by a tornado. I was caught in it and survived along with all the other kids. Good luck and look forward to watching the progress!
Thank you! And the old school I went to (built in 1930s) had a huge gym! This school, we're not even sure it had bathrooms originally. But they did play basketball, found tons of newspaper clips talking about the games!
Please post updates on your progress. Yours is such an interesting project and you do such a good job of narrating. I just love it and wish you well!
Thank you so much!! I've been working on an update and will post soon- between work and two little kids it's been difficult to make a longer edit. :) I do post more updates on my Instagram @schoolhousehomestead though!
@@Schoolhousehomestead I'll go peek at your Instagram! Thanks so much for your note

That's pretty neat about the historic plaques on the trees from when the students planted them years ago. We did that in the 6th grade in front of our Baltimore elementary school back in 1962. Unfortunately, the school has been substantially renovated twice since then and our trees are long gone from checking on Google Maps street view. Glad these trees have survived.
We live just a couple miles west of your schoolhouse…every time we drive by , I look to see your changes.
Looking forward to watching your progress
Thank you so much!!
Wow! What a beautiful piece of land and then your dreams of the renovation sound wonderful as well. What a LOT of work that is going to be. I hope you enjoy the journey and I am SO glad you are sharing it with us on You Tube. I just found you yesterday. I am looking forward to each video. I am a way behind but they are contagious.
After watching more updates of your schoolhouse, i went back and watched how it used to look, you guys did An AWESOME job with the renovating! I’m so excited when the school is finished!
What a project! I’ve just “met” you but y’all look very capable of turning this gem into another gem that is your family’s home. Best of luck and sending only good wishes.
Thank you!!
Lol taking homeschooling to a new level.
Very ambitious project. All I see $$$$$$$. Good luck
Good luck I love it when old buildings are saved.
I am excited to have just discovered you and catching up with your progress!
In my childhood in Rhode Island, I had a big, potted passion flower. It was gorgeous!
My husband and I live at Central Indiana and go to Franklin almost every month for an antique show. Cannot wait to see how this turns out!!!
I don't know how it happened but I saw your first video...about your parents thinking y'all could do this project..and I saw you're in Indiana, so I thought I'd take a look. And then I saw you're in Franklin and I figured that would be somewhere far away from me (I'm in Hartford City) and you're, like, only half an hour away from me on a BUSY day!!! I'm so excited!! I'm a HUGE restoration fan so this is going to be so enjoyable for me. If you have an Open House when you're done, or something like that, I'd love to come and take a look around. But you have to promise me that whatever left that snakeskin behind is loooooong gone!! I don't mind picking up garters around here but that's a bit "tall" for my liking. ROFL!
It was fun hearing you talk about the beautiful Indiana farmland. I grew up in central Illinois, which is nearly identical. After living in a bunch of different states, I, too, was happy to move back to the landscape that spells home to me.
Please consider about growing a big garden for your kids to learn and be excited to see the things that grew.
Oh yes!! I even had a big garden on my balcony in NYC, love gardening. 🥰
@@Schoolhousehomestead this comment made me laugh. Are you old enough to know of the old sitcom Green Acres? Oliver Wendell Douglas had a farm on his balcony in NYC.
@@farmerbill6855 LOL oh yes!! We pretty much only watched TV land growing up. 😂
@@Schoolhousehomestead I couldn't help but laugh. "Fresh air!, Times Square!". Yep, that's you.
I’m so excited for yall and can’t wait for the finish. Its so funny you bring up about the passion fruits I growing up eating that in the woods and food out when I was a teenager it was in the market stores I couldn’t believe it !!When it turn yellow it’s so sweet and good !And this is in the 90’s lol .
They’re so good in cocktails too!!
Just found you guys and I'm so stoked to subscribe and see how many others catch this great content and watch the channel expand from the current 18.6 subscribers.
Wow, what an adventure I look forward to following you to its completion❤️☮️
It’s beautiful, it would be really nice to just put a big porch that spans the whole back with a roof if you could swing it, it would give you a lovely outdoor living space.
Just started watching, can't wait.
That's pretty cool! I look forward to seeing this finished. I'm familiar with your area. I live in Muncie, a little over an hour North of you. I used to commute to Camp Atterbury, back when I was in the National Guard. Beautiful area indeed!
You really had a vision and it has turned out to be spectacular!
Can’t wait to see the outcome, good luck.
This is going to be an amazing project.
Good luck!
Those doors turned out beautiful.. I love the looks of antique wood.. thx for bringing us along on another adventure, the place is really taking shape.. Take care and God Bless...
Thank you so much Gary!!
You are brave and courageous souls for taking on this project!! It's turning out wonderfully! Good job! I had a hundred year old house that I did a teeny weeny bit of renos on, so I can appreciate the time and money this huge project would take! I do love seeing old things become new again! Well done, fam!
FWIW: I was born and raised in Florida, but both my parents were originally from Indiana: Mom was from Williams and Dad was from Bedford.
My parents would return to Indiana for summer vacations {with me -- their only kid -- in tow}, and stay with relatives in Mitchell.
Also: Subbed...👍
Just happened to see that there was a 6 min video about renovating a school into a home -- I didn't watch it but was intrigued and came to your channel -- and am now looking forward to watching from the beginning to the end. This first video you posted makes it look like a huge and daunting challenge but also very exciting.
Nice!
We are definitely cheering you on. My husband and I do renovations too.
He's "Master Carpenter " and retarded Steel Worker. My father had a construction company in Pittsburgh. So I grew up in sawdust!
My sister lives in Greensburg Indiana.
Best wishes
Ohio😊
I believe you meant "retired" steelworker. Gotta love auto correct. 🤦♀️
My parents live about 2 minutes from the schoolhouse. We were so happy to see that someone bought it who would restore it! Good luck!!
The roof first, the foundation second, the ceilings next, the walls, the floors, strip the doors and wood doors to expose the great wood beneath. The Garage for storage, then this area done last.
Can’t wait to see it progress more!
What an undertaking!
Hi Stacie. Can you PLEEEEASE show a video of your school house final video. I'm DYING to see the end result and I can't find anything on the actual end result. PLEEEEASE. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR DECORATION IDEAS. OH THE ROCK NECKLACES ARE BEAUTIFUL.
This is gorgeous, I can’t wait to watch more videos!
Blackford county here. I just found this so I'll be spending sometime here. But, Felines, you need Felines for all those sunny windows. I personally have two.
I am so jealous, I would just love to have this project ❤
I love all of your color choices. Just love the boldness of everthing. Best of lu😅ck.
Awesome building ❤and restoration
My favourite part was Sean’s contribution 😂
Good luck on your future home.
@14:22 Beautiful passion flower bush, it looks like 'passiflora incarnata'. I've seen similar in northern California.
I just discovered your Channel, i will be bing watching this amazing adventure,, I will TRY not to jump ahead!! So very Cool!!
Tornado proofing? Will your windows be a plexi-glass combo? Will you invest in geothermo? And/or Solar energy? Just found you guys and REALLY interested in this. And praise you and your team (Mom/Dad, friends, family etc, contractors) on this incredible journey you're sharing with us. I've subbed!!!
I just found you today. Saw on db & was happy to see on TH-cam. I've got 2 years to catch up on. Can't wait
How exciting. 😊 we have a shool nearby, my husband went till the 6th grade, 1972. Their has been many ppl in & out. In the entry way was their gym.. someone went in & somehow caught mattresses on fire.😢 to say the least, it's alo o damage.
Just found your channel. I am so excited to see the progress as it happens. What an exciting project. Are you going to incorporate solar energy to help cut costs with your electrics? I would imagine a house that size would cost a lot to power. Can't wait to see more.
What a beautiful place. Will you be sharing the cost of the renovation and your home value with us?
this is very cool.
Good luck on your journey restoring‼
so sad i don't see many original design features-----ie- blackboards. but i am sure this fabulous building will turn into a lovely home
Amazing...
Great project !
Very cool
Amazing !!
Indiana will always be home, though i live in Florida now
Just starting the series ❤😁
I just discovered you. I find it interesting as a retired teacher.
Hey can we get a story on the old stove in the basement its cool 😂
That is a lot of space
I subscribed just to see what you guys are going to do with this. very interesting.
If you want chalk board check with Main Street Salvage there in Franklin.
Oh yeah!! I've already gotten some things from there- Danny, who started mad. street has been helping us make renderings for the schoolhouse!
Love it I’m jealous
❤😊this is so cool 😎
What is the square footage of this school? It looks enormous, but I just watched your two most recent videos and it doesn't look as though you have that many rooms.
Good for you. Flaunt your wealth. I hope it makes you happy.
Man you guys could have an indoor pool, a home gym…
Probably was a office in there originally
I went to college at Franklin College
How long will it take you think to finish?
Hope the trees planted by the students are able to be left if not at least find out more about the students named on the plaques.
I have only seen 3 videos so far but look forward to following your progress in the correct order
Maypop is a native plant.
Amazing project and accomplishment! Beautiful site for the children to roam as well, other than closeness to road. I am very disappointed, however in the finishes chosen for the kitchen. The styles don't match and play well with each other or existing architecture. The colors are dated but in the wrong decade and do not flatter the bricks, millwork or each other. Clearly a kitchen designer was not involved or if there was, they did not offer anything to the process. Floors and doors are gorgeous. there are so many building available that can be rehabbed for housing, beuatiful and historic achitecture that must be saved.
To each their own
Were there classrooms downstairs? Were there different stairs or did the kids take those creepy stairs? Loo
I don't believe there were any classrooms downstairs, but I'm not 100% sure. I am pretty sure from the records at the museum that there were only 4 classrooms upstairs!
Could you turn the pot belly stove into an outdoor pizza oven...? Just an idea 💡
And you can incorporate some of those old bricks with it.
How much did you buy it for ?
175k
New follower how much it cost if i may ask
175k
Omygosh!! that's so cheap! Can't wait to see it finished!
The best construction in towns were the old churches and schools.
Just thinking, but with all the school shootings that have taken place over the years, wouldn’t it be good if all schools had secret rooms or secret doors in the floors to escape to the basement for safety?
The shooters are usually students, they go through the same drills as all the other students…
Are you keeping all the interior brick walls behind the plaster?
Yup, we found a plasterer to do it. But anything exposed we will keep exposed.
Good afternoon
How big is the property?
Please share your process of obtaining a property like this from from what i assume is government owned
It's been privately owned since the 1930s! It was a barn after it was a school, and then another family owned it from 1956-2021.
@@Schoolhousehomestead Thank you so much for replying!!!! What type of realtor, website, or keywords, did you use/search to find a school for sell (even if privately owned)
@@oman4229 We found it just the regular way! It was just listed like a normal house. But I have seen a ton pop up on places like Cheap Old Houses!
@@Schoolhousehomestead thank you so much!!!!! & may God continue to bless you & your family greatly ❤
I like the idea of raising the ceilings, but I don't like how many interesting characteristic walls you want to knock down
How many Sq ft is it?
What kind of school was this before
an elementary school until 1934!
@@Schoolhousehomestead looks awesome can't wait to see the end result!
Did ya'll check with a priest yet?...... to do a exorcism first! 👻
If you build it they will come....
That's Iowa, not Indiana.
