Duncan is one of my favorites because he isn't mean, just blunt and honest.
He also seems very smart and quickly finds out the true worth of a business.

It's not doing well and It's not making any money. The deal did go through. James Caan was made a director on the 3rd of August 2009 but resigned shortly after, on the 1st December 2009. Shame, she came across as a nice person.
@@vegn_brit5176 Deal DIDNT go ahead. she went alone. BBC did a follow up on it. she rejected their offer after the Den and had no complaints. Theo even remained friends and continued to help her. Sadly, it looks like she failed as Slinks site is gone !

Why was Duncan writing down her projections for what she intended to spend the investment on, when he was already out?
It's called editing. And I'm afraid it's not always done properly...
Duncan is very good on financials and based on the previous episodes, other dragons have stuffed up and Duncan has come back at them proving that they are wrong.
There is no way that the average woman buys 400-something shoes in their lifetime. That's crazy.

I hope that she does well. I'm really pleased that Theo and James backed her.
Theo and James were initially allocated shares and the latter also became a Director but only for three months before resigning. This was because they converted their investment into a mortgage loan, registered at Companies House as a Charge/Debenture on 18 Sep 2009. It remains outstanding.
what does that mean in layman's terms?

Initially, dragons were investing for shares in a company, I give you 50-100k for 20% or whatever, in your shoe company. We are in business together and want to make money.
You then decide your mum sick so your going to mug the business off for a bit, or you got pregnant and want to keep the baby and take time off, or your not making as much as you thought so just packed it in. Investment wise you owe me nothing, even though I invested a bunch of money.
Investment is like gambling, if it doesn't work for any reason you don't get the money back. I could try and sue but I would never get anywhere, I invested in you, and you just decided to pack it in.
This happened alot to the dragons over the first few seasons, and so they started offering loan agreements where basically they invested the money, as a loan, which you have to pay back after a set amount of years, in return for thier help.
Now the tables have turned, if you try to mug me off, I CAN sue you to get the money back. In reality if the business fails, the dragons would just take it on the chin, it would be unimaginably bad press if they ever went after someone after the business failed, but it just gives the dragon a safety net for if the entrepreneur just totally mugs them off.
This type of investment got some stick in a lot of investment follow ups, but the people who moaned about it were always super inexperienced terrible business people and were only thinking about themselves, and not that a total stranger (a dragon) has shown belief in them and decided to lend them 50-100k, that should come with some kind of agreement that you can't just mugg the dragons off 😄
What likely happened was they invested, turned it into a charge on the business, the business went genuinely badly (as it was clearly going to, this lady had no idea what she was doing or talking about) and so its just left as a charge against her business which they would not have chased her for, because she likely tried her best and just didn't get anywhere.

I don’t see how she’ll make money based on her figures. She claims she pays 45 pounds for the package but sells them to the boutique for $60 pounds. Those margins are terrible.
I love the idea though. If they were comfy to walk in I’d definitely buy a pair.

Double the equity she wanted to give away but two dragon investors seems like a good deal.
That’s the problem with many who enter the den, better to give away 40% to a dragon than worry it’s 30% more than they wanted to give away…. Better to own 60% with a dragon than 100% if nothing on your own.
In the long run, she can negotiate different equity terms but, for the moment, that's two investors with connections & motivation to help her business succeed & guide her with business advice.
@@ashleybrooke2087 true, although I just saw the followup video and turns out she didn't want to give away double the equity so the deal fell through. Kind of annoys me when they don't show the full picture because a lot of it is not what it seems.

As a woman who LOVES sandals and wears them year round because I'm in a warmer climate, I wouldn't want these. I don't want to have to construct my sandals, look for the differing uppers, the bottom portion doesn't look cushioned or supportive like nope I'm out. Lol

They really went in so high in the earlier ones. 40% take it or leave it. Oof!
They weren't as experienced in dealing with it, so they were not sure how much they'd lose, and how much work it would be...plus they thought they could be more greedy. Once they got a few businesses in, they were more charitable because they could afford the losses.

Here in the Philippines we have a town where sandals are manufactured with high quality and fashonable. They sell their pairs for around GBP 5 which is PHP 300 or even less. The town is in Liliw, Laguna.
450 pairs of shoes and spend on average £32,000. I own 1 pair of shoes that go with everything. So if I was a Dragon I’d have to say it’s not an investment for me.
That’s fair enough but plenty of people buy lots of shoes and you aren’t the only potential customer. It’s about thinking of the potential target market and potential money that could be made from it.

These are simply too pricey for flat, thong-style sandals. Not sure when this was filmed, but in 2021, £120/$150 is too much. By the time you buy one base and 2 different tops/straps, you could have easily purchased 3 individual pairs of nice quality sandals.
