I coached HS and college hoops for 30 years (Women's). You're the only freaking guy out there who breaks this shit down from the ground up. Yes, yes, yes to all you say. I'd love your take on the dynamics created in the locker room of big time programs where top level kids are making cash and have their coaches by the nuts because of the ease with which they can transfer out if things are not to their liking and mid and lower level kids, WHO FORM THE GLUE OF PROGRAMS, who can't even scrap up money for a cab ride and have to scratch and fight every day to keep their scholarships. Recruiting has always been a mercenary game. But once you got kids into your program there was enough stability in place to build a team and program and keep all of your kids accountable and on even ground. That's all gone now. I agree with you.....this is not sustainable.
Whitlock is apparently hosting an event with Favre, Sage Steele, Seth Joyner, Warren Sapp. I say is a perfect opportunity for you to show up and to do a remote show, interview some of these legends.
I agree JB, especially about only wanting to recruit grad transfers, if any transfer. Why would you want a kid that’s transferred multiple times? 9 times out of 10 there’s something going on. Great rant!
I have been said that this man deserves a shot at D-1 Level. Give this man a school with resources and I think he would shock College Football! I was hoping my school (Cincinnati) would have thought outside the box and take a look at this man before hiring who they had hired! Shoutout to Coach JB!
Thanks coach for this rant. I learned a lot. I would say that a large portion of college football fans do not know about all of the impacts of the portal. I for one did not know that it impacted high school and juco players. Sounds like someone needs to do a in depth documentary on this.
Coach, how do u feel about G5 to P5 transfers? I get what your saying but what about the dudes out there that are from an over recruited area (Atl/Sfla) and maybe didn’t get a serious look from some bigger programs but killed it in G5 and are looking for step in competition etc?

JB I feel like some people would try to label you as a “narcissist” when ur just clearly telling the truth. I don’t know how narcissism and honesty the same thing but I know this is HONESTY!!
The portal is good for the game and the players under certain circumstances, but some things need to be addressed. Players should be locked into the contract they signed with a school for 2 calendar years unless they drop down from a “power 5” school to a “group of 5” school or their HC or position coach leaves or a family member gets sick. Caleb Williams had the right to follow Lincoln Riley to USC after 1 year since Lincoln Riley is who he committed to out of HS. Now if a P5 freshman gets on campus and just isn’t getting any playing time he shouldn’t be allowed to transfer out from a school like Alabama unless he goes somewhere like Memphis or Central Florida. That at least keeps players locked into a school for 2 seasons and gives graduates the opportunity to transfer also. The Arik Gilberts and Jawaun Mitchells of the world shouldn’t be allowed to go to 3-4 schools over 4-5 years though. Because Gilbert started out at LSU then actually committed to Florida out of the portal then went to Georgia and then Nebraska. Juwaun Mitchell started his career at Texas then transferred to Tennessee and tested the portal waters in the 2022 offseason. Then actually left Tennessee this past fall and is back in the portal again before the season even started
Compare the number of kids who get to leave school debt free vs coaches who actually make a livable wage. People like to bash coaches. I’m not against kids being able to make some coin off name, image and likeness, but you have coaches well into their 30’s and 40s before they make a liveable wage. Some never make a livable wage, they toil at the lower levels for the love of the work and do millions of dollars worth of work for Pennies and can lose it all for so many reasons beyond their control. Most of those coaches that do get a bag get one shot at that money and never see it again. You can’t make players and coaches equal because the stress that comes along with the coaching profession would crush most young people. It crushes most coaches
