I always love seeing you show up on reactions. The downside of commenting on a huge channel like Elizabeth's is that your comment may go unnoticed (I'm only the 3rd like after 3 hours). Hopefully more notice so that it comes to Elizabeth's attention. I think getting an interview with Elizabeth may be the next best thing to Oprah. 😉 I'm sure she would love to do it since she regularly does interviews. @FrankGroo ปีที่แล้ว +32

To me one of the points of the story is that abuse, violence, alcoholism and so on always have a huge impact on the next generation, and very often history repeats itself. So Jenny coped with life like her mother and grandmother did (stay silent), while Screech acted the same as his dad and granddad (abusive, violent). So I don't know if I agree with you that they both really 'chose' to behave the way they did.

What impresses me most is how quickly Ren can switch between characters, unique vocal stylings, and guitar motifs that paint such a vibrant picture. He is such a storyteller. Bardcore at its finest!
And you are right, the story itself is powerful. This was a Greek and/or Shakespearean Tragedy. Ren was inspired to write the Tale of Jenny and Screech after seeing an article buried on page 6 or 7 of a 14 year old boy who killed a prostitute with a knife. The police officer was shaken and remarked “it’s such a shame.” But by adding the layer and backstory from Violet’s Tale that Ren released 3 years later, it adds so much more. But the generational trauma and cycles of violence happen every day 😿
Your excitement with the intro to Screech’s Tale was fantastic! I love that he incorporates classical guitar into his performance. And my favorite is Violet’s Tale, especially using the tall stairwell for acoustical depth.
It’s a one-man 3-act play! And his buddy Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it is fantastic! You should also check out “Chalk Outlines” and “How To Be Me,” both featuring Chinchilla. They were also filmed live and will give you goosebumps!

I kind of feel that Ren doesn't really process different types of music as different styles, but more variations in his mode of expression.
It's less like he "mixes styles" and more that he tells a story using the breadth of the musical palette as his language.
He fits the styles together so well because he is usually the style that part of the story speaks in.
This of course only comes from a masterful knowledge of music.
So much of his music feels so freeflowing and yet you know every element is intentional.

Also, I LOVE how much you go into his deliberate "imperfections" as an expression of heightened emotion. It's not smooth and it's not MEANT to be. We often think of them as mistakes because people want the smooth feel, but Ren shows his genius here by "breaking" those rules deliberately. GREAT analysis!

  • @theodesselas157

The way the 'cycle' motif and repeating patterns are worked into this trilogy, all to support the idea that abuse and violence is a cycle... It's unparalleled genius.
First there is the epanaleptic structures, where the starts and end are _mirrored_ :
Jenny's part: "It was a quiet dark night in the empty street..." + "Can you blame"/"Such a shame" (...)
Screech's part: "Our story it _starts_ right at the _end_ " + "Our story it _ends_ right at the _start_ "
Violet's part: "London city far from pretty..." + the rewinding sound effect at the guitar
The whole: starting with Jenny and Screech's death and ending with their birth (...)
Then there are tons of reference to the lexical field of cycles and repeating patterns:
Jenny: "She walked it about a 1000 times before" / she's compared to a clock / "a symphony of the night that _echoes_ crime on London streets"
Screech: "Can I _swing_ ..." he says to his girlfriend
Violet: "Every night he tucked her tight..." / "Packing shelves at Tesco, stacking jars like pickled bricks" so repetitive work, and repetition builds a prison / "History repeats itself"
I'm sure I'm missing a ton. And I'm not knowledgeable enough in music, rapping, and directing structures but I'm sure these patterns are present there as well.
I pray all the Jenny's get to escape these cycles, all the James's manage to stop knocking, and Violets manage to not stay silent...
*_Ren, your genius is staggering_* .

Yep. Thankfully none of the antidepressants I was ever on made me feel like a floating chalk outline, but some days when I have a particularly bad day I do feel like that, I think it's a minor form of disassociation to try to escape the pain I feel. It's so shitty, because usually people are sad for a reason, and so you can do something about it, try to fix it, but what do you do when you feel like utter crap, every breath feels like inhaling fire, your heart physically hurts as if a ghost hand is crushing it, you can't stop crying, and yet there is nothing wrong? There is no reason for you to feel that way? Just a chemical imbalance in your brain. It's horrible to feel so helpless. So I just cry and cry cause it does feel a bit better to get it all out, but the main thing is just to survive the day until I manage to fall asleep, because almost never I have days like that twice in a row, thankfully. I do sit in bed all day though, because it's where I feel safe, so the first line really hits me deep, "I'm still here in this bed that I crawled in, hope that I'm someone else in the morning". (Sorry for talking so much about myself and my issues, I was trying to say why I resonate with the song but I feel like I just turned the whole thing into me me me me me. Sorry.)

This is a sobering tale of the unconscious cycle of abuse and violence. In the east they call it the wheel of samsara, endlessly playing out the same karmic scenarios until someone has the guts to end the flow of the wheel for good. In the story Jenny blindly inherits the silence and freeze of her mother and Screech the psychopathic anger of his father. Their inherited traits both result in their demise. I suppose one of the ways to end the cycle is awareness, and this is what Ren is doing. Bringing the unconscious into consciousness. It's not pretty, but it is definitely real. It's almost Shakespearian. What a talent this man is....

    • @martinrobinson936
      @martinrobinson936 ปีที่แล้ว +15

And one theory about Jenny, the Rosie on her cheeks - heavy makeup, walking these streets - working girl? Heavy makeup so possibly prostitution at an early age. Also Screech’s mate Patrick is not home, and Screech’s girl is ‘busy’ - busy with Patrick cheating on Screech as he is volatile and violent so she is going to gravitate to someone caring.

    • @RatingsFor
      @RatingsFor ปีที่แล้ว +12

I think it's important (and very hard) for people to recognize and break this cycle. I grew up with young parents who made a lot of mistakes and a dad who had anger issues. I decided early in my life I didn't want to be like that and, thankfully, can say I'm not. My brother internalized their problems and while he can recognize them now, he's going through hell because of them and breaking the cycle in some ways has broken him (he's getting better). As corny as it is, be the change you want to see.

@@martinrobinson936 I don't know for sure, and obviously not trying to speak for anyone else, but I have been surprised to see this theory floating round because I did not perceive the character of Jenny in that way at all.
To me the descriptions of Jenny just seemed like a regular teenager who's been hanging out with friends or round one of her friends houses after school or something, but now it's getting on and she needs to go home.
Perhaps I am just relating it to my own experiences of adolesence in England, albeit many years before Jenny would have been in secondary school - I'd have been at school a few years before Violet! But for the girls it was common to wear heeled shoes. Not like ridiculous, probably max 3 inch heel, and the fashion of the time was the chunkier style heels. Trainers were not allowed, so most of the girls basically wore black leather women's office workwear type sensible shoes, but heeled. Also adding to my theory, at age 14, in the English school system, depending when in the year the birthday falls, would put that student at year 9 or year 10 (age 13-14, and 14-15 respectively), so in the 3rd or 4th year of secondary school. And even accounting for school holidays etc, for the average teenager who walks to/from school would have walked that route around a thousand times or more. Also, a "cold dark night" in London, if it was winter it can be dark before 4pm, so even when it's not super late, it feels late because it's already been dark and cold so long! And when people are out in the cold they'll often have 'rosy cheeks'.
So in my opinion, and it is only my opinion, it makes more sense to me that she's just a teenager, a schholgirl.
as for the idea of Screeches girlfriend cheating on him and that being why she was busy, I simply interpreted that as being she was busy because she's probably also a teensger living at her parents house who likely wouldn't be impressed for him to randomly go round, especially if it was getting late. And Patrick must surely be older to have his own place, presumably? Idk, just my thoughts!

I'd like to have seen Elizabeth listen to some his more singy stuff - How to Be Me is a stand out for me

I disagree with the replies here, the studio version is just better. Chalk outlines is great live but how to be me was a touch disappointing. The modifications they made, especially chinchilla's, just don't really fit imo.

Absolutely. Especially seeing Ren's emotions, like he really looks lost when he sings "I forgot how to be me" and he looks so angry and desperate at "Where is my God where are you?" I must have watched that video 50 times (I've also just heard it, but it's so much more impactful with the visual, Chinchilla looking at him while he sings like she's trying to understand, and the fact they're on the same bridge where Brian allegedly jumped from), and I still feel my stomach drop and a grip on my heart. It's so moving.

Am I crazy but this makes me think of Bertolt Brecht "The threepenny opera". Raw and reflective of the life in the more difficult part of town.

This is my favourite reaction/review of this tragic tale (and I've watched alot!). So many new insights that others haven't commented on.

What gets me about Ren is that unlike most artists he is not at all afraid to have his voice be heard with almost no accompaniment of other instruments save his acoustic. Where rap vocalists are covered and protected by the bass and the beat and the fancy production of the audio, but Ren is almost stark alone. It's like admiring a single tree in a field versus a tree in a forest. He is not bashful in the slightest and I think that sort of subconsciously boosts the interest and connection of his audience.

Many have come close, but finally you madam have finally done justice to this piece of art from a modern day minstrel.
