    Great video Destin. You're the man.
    Though I feel compelled to note just one thing; this is the first SED that I have seen where I might know more about what is going on in the video than even Destin. Solely because I have worked with glass for 15 years.
    A few things that might be worth mentioning: both varieties of glass that he tested (because that is what auto makes typically use) are soda-lime glass. That means that in the manufacturing process they start with a typical silica base, and add primarily sodium carbonate, lime, typically small amounts of aluminum and a few other things, melt it, and drag the molten glass out on long conveyors. Interestingly, for annealed glass, the furnace is constantly producing glass, and the belts are usually very long, to give the glass time to cool and anneal. They pour it continuously out of the furnace and it hardens as the pressure from pouring it all pushes the whole thing forward. We're talking typically a quarter mile (402 meters) with some minimal friction coefficient. Imagine the pressure pouring it gives you, to push 402 meters of glass along at an even rate.
    Anyway, there are two ways of making that raw soda lime glass into tempered glass. One is, as Destin described, a separate pour rig which forces air onto the surface of the molten plane, in order to cool the exterior to build up internal surface tension. The other way is to take an already cut piece of annealed and put it into a cooler oven and melt the surface and innards to do the same thing, or just melt the surface and cool it immediately. All three give the same basic result. You can also adjust the variables to change the effect, such as using less heat and cooling a bit more slowly to heat strengthen the glass, so it is in between tempered and annealed. It is strong because of the surface tension, but when it breaks it breaks in bigger chunks than does tempered, and is lighter.
    The surface tension for tempered glass is so high that you can actually just barely tap an edge and cause it to burst. It takes almost no pressure. If Destin had just niked the edge instead of dropping his tempered sample, it would have easily broken. It was actually an amazing fluke that he dropped it on the edge and corner and it did not break. How I wish I had that luck, because i have slightly tapped tempered pieces on the edge while installing them and broken them.
    Anyway, as he noted tempered is useful in the side windows because they're strong, but if they break they wont send huge chunks of glass at your face should you get in an accident. For the exact same reason, Federal code in the US (and almost certainly everywhere else, I just don't know any specific details about how jurisdictions outside the US work) states that glass with a high likely hood to break from normal use has to be safety glass, like in doors and near floor drains and low tot he ground. All automotive windows have to also be safteyglass. The windshield specifically, as Destin mentioned, is actually laminated annealed glass. Typically they're DS glass sandwiching a chunk of .080 plastic, heat fused so that they all adhere to one another. That makes the glass much much stronger, but also makes it so that the chunks don't fly into the vab to any great degree. Tempered glass is still stronger, but if that shattered you'd have tons of tiny shards flying towards your eyes, or it would wholly obscure your vision so a rock hitting your windshield would effectively blind you, which of course is not good when moving around at high speed in a giant chunk of metal.
    Lastly, there are a ton of other kinds of glass. From high aluminum content to borosilicate like old Pyrex (incidentally, modern kitchenware "pyrxs" is actually just tempered soda-lime glass) to fancy stuff like LAS (Lithium, Aluminum, Silicate) for high temp applications like oventops and fireplaces. Some are MUCH stronger than anything you'd find in a typical automobile, but they re also so expensive that the car would cost twice as much as it already does with that one little change.
    That was kind of long and sort of rambling, but since Destin made a vid about something I actually know a bit about, I thought I might as well just ramble on. If anyone bothered to read it, I hope we all learned something today.

      maybe. I work as an engineer bending and tenpering glass for cars like the kind they're breaking. unless you have a hammer or something you're not going to break that glass if the Windows up. he didn't mention that part. it's also much easier to break if you just apply a point load anywhere in the surface, that's how they do ece tests to make sure the number of particles it breaks into is within specification and it's much easier.

    Hi, great video! Speaking of cars and slow motion videos I have a video idea. I would love to see in slow motion how tires on my car react when I drive through a hole in the street. I want to know if it's better to take it slow or fast. I think is not a good idea to hit the brake in the last minute while the wheel is in the hole. Is it better to accelerate through the hole? Always wondered. Thanks

      one time i went over a ditch for a water line or something while braking and sometime during the process my brake pad got scuffed pretty bad. This happened right before inspection so luckily when i took the car in and told my mechanic about it i got to take a look at how messed up my brakes got from what i assume was this ditch.
      In short, i would like to see not only the effects on tires but also brakes :D

    You are the best!
    An advice: The technical part about the differences between tempered and non-tempered glass were overrun a bit quickly this time and were hard to follow. One does not get the feeling that everything is perfectly understood. I mean, how the cooling process affects the molecular structure that confers the glass its mechanical properties? And how does this affect exactly the breaking progress?
    I know they are complex subjects to make fully clear in a 7 minute video but still, thanks for the great job!
    The slo-mo sequences were awesome, though I'd have loved to see it in even slower progression... Now that's gonna take an indecent amount of fps, LOL :D

I know most of what you guys do is from sponsor related media and the adds and to have views here, let's be honest, it's not that hard. But to produce such a high quality content in a manner so full of fun, curiosity and, to the fullest of sincerity, pleasure, it is no little accomplishment. You turn a complicated part of the world, that is, the internet, a better place. Thanks, Destin. This is the real deal.

      It's extremely difficult to open your doors when your car drives into a lake and is submerged in water. The water pressure is immense and you will almost certainly die if you wait until the pressure equalizes once the car fully fills with water, as your car will be at the bottom of said lake.

    I might be a bit late 4 years later - and it might have been said in the comments already (and I just didn't find it): Destin is absolutely right about the attributes of the glass - still, the advice on how to break out from a car through the windows is still to go through the wind shield - not through the side doors: The windshield is built in in a way that when you lay back in the front seat and push the wind shield with your feet the whole wind shield will pop out. It is not about breaking it but about pushing it out of its ancors!

    If you have tint on your window, the glass shatters but is held in place

    • @withyouforyou6214
      @withyouforyou6214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's not true. I fabricate automobile windows in a factory. Some glass is laminated. The glass you're thinking of that stays in place is laminated glass. That's why windshields don't bust out when they're hit where-as side lites and back lites do. Some more expensive cars or specific models have all laminated glass but that increases the cost of the car and the only advantage for that is noise reduction. The vast majority of glass is regular tempered glass but it's made with different coloring. We have dark glass, light blue glass and light green glass. AS2 means non-tinted, AS3 means tinted. You'll see it on every window you look at. You're thinking of laminated glass which is just two pieces of glass with a laminate layer between the plates. Tempered glass can be broken by stress on the edge or a puncture.

    • @FrostMonolith
      @FrostMonolith 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      which window?

    • @withyouforyou6214
      @withyouforyou6214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What do you mean by which window? Every plate in an automobile has a trademark o_o..

    • @withyouforyou6214
      @withyouforyou6214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I want to edit my comment and clarify something. If the tinting is done post-fabrication, as in it doesn't ship from the factory as tinted glass (the composition of the glass is darker), then the tinting process is basically a lamination process. Tempered glass will also stay in place if you wrap it in saran wrap before you pop it with a punch, so...yeah...Point being factory made tinted glass acts like normal tempered glass. Post-fabrication tinting makes the tempered glass act like it's laminated, because, hint, it is.
