I'm gonna say, the rover is so much bigger than I thought it was

+Gerald P Yeah I was quite surprised. I was kind of thinking "golf card". It was more like a volkswagon or hatchback. I wish I could have gotten into the mechanics of the wheels etc. There's so much to learn about it. I shot some video, but for the sake of not making a 30 minute video I decided to leave it out. Perhaps I'll upload it separately to the second channel.

The internet is the future of entertainment and kinda already is. Television has soooooo many flaws for so many reasons
unstopableguy1 Technically, as it is, more people still watch live TV and/or Netflix than TH-cam or similar social media sites. Although that is changing, yeah. But just think of the exposure Destin would get? He might also get a higher budget and, potentially, a bigger bang for his buck. Like I said though, I feel like his creativity and childish interest in everything he talks about should be his priority, as that's one of his most appealing qualities.

Yes indeed, i never saw a picture of the rover with a reference (like a person). I kinda expected something of the size of Sojourner (the rover from Pathfinder Mark salvages in the Martian).

Ayep! The pictures make it look small because there isn't anything you can really scale it to.
Most people think it's maybe the size of a desk, or a coffee table.
It's really fun to see peoples reactions when they realize it's actually the size of an SUV.
My favorite part is that NASA said JPL could not make a mould on the tires that would stamp JPL on the surface of Mars. JPL fixed this by writing JPL in Morse code on the tires.

He does that with every expert he talks to. They explain off camera and he summarizes. I can see the contradiction in how he said that she'd explain it and then she didn't, but it's a simple mistake with him forgetting the style of his own videos for a second. No big, really.

Drilling is incredibly interesting. The mechanical processes and designing for drilling all depends on what you are trying to do.
Pulverizing the rock is perfect for analyzing the chemistry make up of the rock AND it happens to be the easiest way to but a hole in rock. But if you want to analyze the lithology and the geologic processes or drill a deeper hole, this method is insufficient.

Also, you can speed it up by clicking on that gear icon and changing the play speed. If the speakers are articulate enough, as they are here, you have no problem hearing it in time saving speeds. 1.5 usually works for me.

Yea, that was one of the major achievements of the Curiosity mission; landing a 2000 lb car-sized robotic vehicle on another planet, the biggest ever. I watched the stream of the landing from JPL. It was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen.

It is amazing how complex we can make a procedure as simple as drilling into a rock. It actually, legitimately is. I want to meet the guy that designed that procedure, it's a thing of beauty and he needs more recognition.
+Teth47 It's an incredibly ingenious solution. It's a drill-meets-vacuum-cleaner with barely any moving parts that can go without maintenance for a really long time. By using gravity and the shaking of the drill (which is needed for drilling anyway) to move the dust around, you can pretty much guarantee that it cannot break down. If you can drill, you can move the dust around. It's such an elegant solution when you take a closer look.

He confirmed soggy soil which is water but just moisture. We are currently on the hunt for standing liquid water. We know for sure that the planet mars has H20 in some forms at the surface and we have known that for a while, even in 2008 the Phoenix lander took pictures of snow falling from clouds about 5km above the surface but the snow evaporated before it hit the ground, which is called virga.

I imagine much debate went into the drill-bit design characteristics...with an emphasis on weight, and tungsten is heavy.
Is the bit itself (cutting tip only):
SOLID carbide?
...because to me, it looks just like a masonry bit for concrete but at such a weight cost! I'm sure plating atop lighter, yet stiff materials was also an option for a cutting edge...(I sure would have liked to be a fly on the wall during that phase of design discussion)

If you could clarify for me a little further. How do you get the dust to go up the drill? I understand the process of using gravity to transfer the sample but how do you get the dust to go up into the "chamber"? Thanks!!
+xXTHELEECHXx good question, sorry that wasn't clear. At 7:16 you can see that the bit shaft is "fluted" - see the spiral inclined plane that looks similar to a normal wood cutting bit? Unlike a wood bit, these flutes are not sharp for cutting, rather they're for auguring the powder up through the stem and into the first chamber.

Thank you so much, Destin for being one of the highlights of my TH-cam subscription box. I'd love to move to the U.S. and work for NASA, even though that's probably not gonna happen due to the whole export control issue thing. They've inspired me since I was a child, and I'm now an Aerospace Engineer for it. Your space videos are a constant reminder to me that NASA continues to inspire and do amazing things, despite funding shortfalls and often public indifference

Well I think both *‘briansmobile1’* and *‘Ryan Z’* got it right in different ways. Lucky events can fall upon one from time to time out of the blue. Though the most rewarding of ‘lucks’ can be those you make for yourself and there is a definition of this kind of luck: “When Preparation Meets Opportunity”. But these self-made ‘lucks’ are different for everyone in degree and path. My path was geology and it took me to many amazing locations and I saw fundamental and awe-inspiring examples of the geologic processes of the Earth. And when I’m in one of my grandiose moods I feel I can grasp the workings of the Earth in toto. However, the reality is that I really don’t know enough to know what I don’t know. And, although I consider myself lucky to be alive and to have done and seen the things I have, I can’t do everything, and so I do envy (think they are lucky) those who have also made their own ‘lucks’ along some different, interesting, fun, path. I have lived through the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo eras and I regret not witnessing, and envy thoughts who did, a Saturn V launch. Finally, I think this is why we watch these types of TH-cam videos; to vicariously experience the different self-made ‘lucks’ of these individuals and to share in their joy. I certainly did when Destin did his over-head-arm monkey dance after his hokey pokey ditty.

You can see this earthbound rover out in the yard on Google Earth if you look at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The rover is located in the dirt area at the northeastern side of the campus. The rover is a white rectangle just left of a smallish building with a tan roof. That building is the one in the video that the rover is kept in. If you zoom in on the rover you can see the 6 wheels.

+Daan de Jong Blurred compared to what? It's a photo taken from a satellite that's in orbit over four hundred kilometers up. Did you expect clarity like a wedding photographer would get at 3 meters? I found it very exciting that the satellite got a shot with the rover outside! What are the odds of that happening?
No of course not. I know how a satellite works -,-. Its blurred compared to the surrounding area, perhaps it is blurred by purpose, like they do at military basis. Perhaps Google shows me different pictures because I'm in another country or something.

I can also very clearly see a blue sedan and a white pickup truck in the road next to it. So clearly in fact that you can see a bed extender in the back of the truck

I think the 5 min TH-cam rule is out dated now. This was back in the 2000's when TH-cam was starting, and I think this is applicable most to personal vlogs.

I'm surprised this expensive, highly advanced rover is just sitting in a garage like this. Like, oh, just walk around this corner, take a peek in the garage over ere, and wow, there's the rover! I don't know what I was expecting, but I was expecting something like a clean room environment, not something you can just walk up to from outside like this. Pretty incredible stuff. Love it.

+paulczar Well, mars isnt a clean room and there are no people there to fix it. so i guess its a bit more sturdy than we are used to when talking about spacecraft.
+fakiirification good point. It's very well built and durable rover, even though the wheels are getting torn to bits on Mars. But still, Earths environment is in many ways more damaging to the rover than Mars. In my opinion, the presence of oxygen and water moisture in the atmosphere mean components on the Earth twin rover can oxidize (rust) while on Mars, I'm not sure this is really possible. I guess there are other oxidizing agents, but I'm still surprised how the rover is stored like this. But it does make sense. Either way, I love everything about the rover and Mars.

Wow, the "space exploration deniers" will have a hard time to think about a strategy to explain that all of this is just a made up scene to pretend that the Mars mission is real. They even invented drill engineers with fake prototypes, robots and very nice engineering to trick SmarterEveryDay in his tour. These NASA actors are really convincing. Great.

Your point is good, but not entirely sufficient. I am mostly convinced that the drill engineer from this video is certain that his model is truly being used on Mars, and I wouldn't blame him for thinking that because NASA is sure to provide evidence to support its claims - even when the evidence could have been made up - and I think that the drill is probably exactly the kind of drill that one would use to most effectively (to our present engineering knowledge) collect samples from Mars' surface (according to whatever evidence, true or not [because yes, obviously some of what NASA claims is indeed true] has to say about the assumed surface of Mars). And when I say "assumed" surface, I'm not implying that I don't think Mars exists. I just know of NASA's tendency to portray discrepancies, and not the kind of discrepencies you get from innocent, random chance.
Sorry for the ramble, but with the people in control having been in control for so long and so deeply - behind the scenes, of course - it is not too difficult to imagine how such a group could achieve such dupery to an extent that even most of NASA's employees, even the ones relatively "high up," are not aware that their honest work is being mediated by deception.
I don't think most of these people are lying. They are seeing what they are seeing and that is what they are reporting back, it's just that what they are seeing is what has already been manipulated.

You aught to get a nice camcorder for on-the-fly video recording. It's a LOT easier to keep it steady, zoom in, and maintain focus. A DSLR is clunky to manage if you don't set it up ahead and of time or you don't have another camera operator.

I was pondering the same. There's giant dust storms etc. on Mars aswell. It's not like you can just hose it down. Maybe one of the arms has compressed air? Probably not that simple, but a very interesting question regardless.

It is an amazing engineering feat. These are amazing people who have put their time and energy into producing an independent intergrated system like the Mars Rover. Makes me wonder how life would have ever come about without such foresight and foreknowledge.

The rover is much bigger than i have been imagining it. I've never seen it next to a person as a size comparison. I've been assuming it was about 3-4 feet long, and not the about 10 feet it actually is.
