How the Lighthouse of Alexandria Still (Sorta) Exists

  • Ah, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the 7 things every tourist had on their bucket list 2000 years ago. You’ve probably heard that all of them are gone, except for the pyramids of Giza, which are ironically the oldest of them by far, but what if I told you that the other wonder in Egypt, the lighthouse of Alexandria, still (sorta) exists?
And I don’t just mean that a few blocks from it are still sitting around somewhere, I mean that it’s still standing and you ca still climb up it… in a way. The only thing is, this lighthouse isn’t the original. But it’s pretty much a scale model, so just like how you can still technically call the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas, “the Eiffel Tower” even though it isn’t the original, you can technically, sorta call this mini-lighthouse of Alexandria the lighthouse of Alexandria.
But before we delve into the mini-lighthouse, we’ve gotta look into what made the OG lighthouse so special, what eventually happened to. And since this video is all about how the lighthouse of Alexandria sort of still exists, we’ll be looking into what tantalizing traces of the actual Pharos still survive.
I will try to list my many sources down here after uploading the video

You can't help but wonder if the tomb beneath the Abusir Pharos might be that of the original architect of the actual Pharos of Alexandria.
It would be a fitting monument, and would definitely explain the odd placement.
Probably no way to prove or disprove that theory, but it feels right to me.

I had a similar thought.. When they discovered the tomb of Arsinoe, ( Cleopatra's murdered sister) in Turkey it was an octagonal shape. They believed it was a harkening back to her Egyptian homeland of Alexandria's lighthouse. Apparently the shape has roots in ancient Greek burials as well. My thought was that it may have been the final burial place of Cleopatra and Antony, possibly even Alexander.. Although the early accts say he was buried in the center of Alexandria.. either way, I don't think they (all three) are under water, since the majority of what sank was the palace, and I doubt they were living with all the dead pharaoh's. It would be amazing to find any of those tombs!!

You can't call it a "scale model" if it doesn't look anything like the original.

It had to be the funerary tomb of the original architect Sostradus of Cnidos. Who else would want to memorialise himself in such a building with such an obvious significance ? If I was to hazard a guess, that's my best one 😁 Great video btw, very well researched, i thoroughly enjoyed it 👌

The minaret of the 9th century Mosque of Ibn Tulun in Cairo looks similar to the Pharos. Although some claim it was added in the 13th century and not original to the mosque, it would still have been designed well before the Pharos collapsed. Many of the modern minarets in Alexandria bear a (likely intentional) resemblance to the Pharos.

Could you add the sources you used in this video to the description? You said in the video you were going to do it, but it doesn't seem like you ever got around to it.
Never knew the Lighthouse might have been a bit north of the current fort, I always assumed it was the same site. That graphic mapping the surviving debris is also *very* useful, never seen that before.

Really great video! That 'mini lighthouse' is very interesting and enigmatic building - I hope that someday new informations (in some text or whatever) about its purpose will be found.
Also, wheter or not Kathleen is right about Cleopatra's tomb in Taposiris Magna, I can't help but understand her reasoning when I think about 'lighthouse' there. If it Cleopatra's burial site, then it would be very symbolic and metaphoric that she is buried in temple that is very close to mini replica of tower that stands over her capital. The Queen viewed herself as incarnation of Isis - her being buried in temple of Isis's husband AND with Pharos Lighthouse sort-of-replica... that's very tempting vision. Even if Kathleen won't find her, I can certainly see why she has been inspired to excavate this place.
