Yes, British era bridge, ,but built by locals (Sinhalese) because Brits gave up construction due to lack of steel. Locals built it without steel and the Brits were astonished.
Tamil labor done nothing
Storm Woods So the credit for providing labour goes to Tamils and the engineering marvel is from the brains of Sinhalese 👍
@Storm Woods In 1923, majority of the locals in those areas were Sinhalese. Even today Ella and Bandarawela have more Sinhalese than Tamils. Thanks.
Love the laid back style of your vlog, & have enjoyed this Lankan series. I think you should give some credit to the locals , instead of just calling the Nine Arch bridge as a British bridge. "The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, P. K. Appuhami, in consultation with British engineers. The chief designer and project manager of the 'upcountry railway line of Ceylon' project was D. J. Wimalasurendra, a distinguished Ceylonese engineer and inventor. The designer of the viaduct was Harold Cuthbert Marwood of Railway Construction Department of Ceylon Government Railway. The 1923 report titled "Construction of a Concrete Railway Viaduct in Ceylon" published by the Engineering Association of Ceylon has details of all the records including the plans and drawings. Popular rumours suggest that when construction work commenced on the bridge, the Great War began between the empires of Europe and the steel assigned for this site was reallocated to Britain's War related projects at the battlefront. As a result, the work came to a standstill, leading the locals build the bridge with stone bricks and cement, but without steel." (wiki)

We head over in July for 2 weeks...Sao Paulo, Iguazu Falls then Rio. Have watched your vids but any tips on where to stay in Rio? Have looked at Copacabana and Botafogo areas :)
Yeah I am originally from Manchester but I left there 12 years ago when I was 19 and lived in Rio for 6 years and then Houston Texas for 4 years so my accent has changed quite a lot. Usually people from England can still hear something northern in my voice though even if they find it confusing lol
I always stayed in the copacabana region as it is right next to the beach. Botafogo has some really cool bars though and still very close to the beach

I found the Sri Lanka videos and Little Adam's Peak. I tried that but in 2015 there were no stairs and I was in my 60's and with no people about was too scared to get across a broken gap in the path so didn't make it to the top. Now I have seen the view and wish I had.

"British bridge" lol, if Sri Lankans build a bridge in England then it would be a Sri Lankan bridge I guess 🤔
Sujeewa Lakmal maybe they are called that because of the design and architect.
Yeah it’s because of the architecture, probably in the majority of the places that have colonial buildings it was the locals that actually built it. But you still wouldn’t say it’s a local building. For example many countries have China town but mainly built by locals, you would still call it Chinese

I'm from England and this bridge is typical of many bridges built for railways across valleys in the times of Queen Victoria. Considering Sri Lanka was a British Colony between 1815 and 1948, I'm guessing it was probably designed/built by the British. I'd like to think the relationship between Britian and Sri Lanka is still a strong one.

Still not allowed as far as I understand, before I went I noticed all the vloggers are still flying theirs after the ban so I decided to still fly mine, just fly far away from anyone and nobody ever notices 👍

Are tuk tuks readily available anywhere in Kandy and Ella? The prices they give is what you agree to or bargain? I wonder if we can do the little Adams peak with our 5 years old child. Someone told me Ella is not for you if you are not hiking up the hills
The 2 places in this video are great places to take your 5 year old I think 👍 yeah tuk tuks are literally all over the place!
They usually shoot 100-200 higher but sometimes we would just accept their first price if we can’t be bothered with the haggling game

They are all way too far from Chicago but Asia is always too far and countless hours of sitting in plane. From all the so Lanka videos I watched on TH-cam , Kandy Ella and Galle are the ones I like and we may go there in august
