Houseki definitely seems like something I would take inspiration from if I was an artist, Ichikawa's use of shading and paneling is gorgeous. Although I think you have an amazing style of your own so I look forward to seeing more from you!

Changing his/her appearance to resemble Antarc. Even the attitude and taking the duty for the whole winter just not to disappoint Antarc. Spoiler . . . . . . . If there will be a second season, Phos will have a partner who looks like Antarc, which will make him/her go nuts. Phos will go over protective over that gem, Even leads him/her to go self destruct not to harm the gem.

He asked Prince Aechema to make him look like Antarc (I respected Cairngorm a lot that chapter for trying to make Phos happy) then Aechema refused and said that Cairngorm is a two quartz something or whatever I forgot. Aechema told Cairngorm that he look very pretty or whatever he said (I think he was basically flirting with Cairngorm). Then Cairngorm falls in love with Aechema and became bitchy all of the sudden. (and there is very I lost all my respect for him) Then they got married. Here’s some bonus stuff that I did not get to say: I miss Ghost (aka the true Cairngorm) I am sad that Antarc can’t be restored This all happen on the moon Phos appearance became pretty disturbing Phos want to shatter everyone on earth (including sensei) Phos change his head Aechema is a Lunarian After reading this I don’t think you can read the manga anymore cuz I spoiled the entire half of the series (that are published)
There will be spoilers of anime, not the manga. Antarc was the person who actually forced Phos to work and showed her that she didn't have to be the hardest to be strong or useful. Both were very lonely, even if Phos could talk to others (everyone treated her like garbage, except maybe Master Kongo and some older gems who knew that the young pebbles are like it, but were too busy to spend quality time with Phos) Because Antarc was never able to establish a deeper relationship with others, she was a bit strange and sometimes behaved rude, but that's nothing, because she got attached very quickly. She had that soft side, and even not that deep in her as Cinnabar had - she got very attached to her companion after about TWO MONTHS - she didn't hesitate to jump into dangerous water and then even cried because Phos' memories were lost. We see how much Antarc values even the smallest memories in the fight scene with Lunarians, so Phos was certainly an important person for her. Not to mention the depression in which a small, cheerful little pebble has fallen into, wanting to devote her whole life to finding Antarc. And her hallucinations, anxiety, loneliness.. Honestly? I think they had at least a very deep bond, although I have a feeling it could have been more than that. In Japan, the concept of friendship is indeed very important, but still, what they did for each other in such a short time seems to be a romantic interest. Stones can probably feel it, because it was a bit of a talk about it at first, but in the Cinnabar situation. I'm sorry I used "she", but my English is not very good and I prefer not to make a bigger mess in my comment with "they".
I guess that her flaws in the beginning are what set me off with Phos. But she's still fantastic, especially for a main character, as main characters are rarely as well developed. Props to the writers/manga author for having the guts to change her so much throughout the series
For purely aesthetic reasons, Bort is one of my big favorites. Watching her move... Is just incredible, especially with the work the animators put into the drag and flow of her hair
@@GiGitteru Cairn may be a total, y'know. But they're a pretty well written character. Like I geniunely hate their guts and how they treat Phos you but I kinda feel sad for them for having to be stuck with Ghost for years. So basicly, I don't think it's a "bad" preference, not my type, but not bad
disappointed Morga didn't even get a mention. Love how haughty and self assured she is even though she fucked up big in episode 1. Love her banter with Phos. Love Euclase, to me she feels like one of the older more mature gems. The way she handles the younger gems like Phos and Jade, Euc comes off as very knowing in a parental sort of way. The Dia/Bort dynamic is very interesting. You can approach it from so many different angles. Bort never wants to lose another gem, and has put this massive burden on themself of being the most powerful. Bort pities Dias weakness but is so frustrated they have given up completely on helping Dia improve, and instead infantilizes her, but at the same time Bort looks up to Dia as a mentor and older sibling. That's just a small slice of 1/4 of this relationship dynamic. I could literally write pages about everything going on between them. I could actually probably write at least 1 full page on every character in the series.. That's how you know a series has good characters
I do regret not mentioning Morga, her banter with Phos in the first episode is part of the reason that I fell in love with the characters and interactions right off the bat, I hope she gets more screentime going forward. And yeah the Dia/Bort relationship is so complex to analyze, that's part of the reason why I wanted to write an entire video on the subject just because they're so goddamn interesting.
So I'm not the only one that finds Euclase attractive. Good to know. The anime really made me appreciate Jade and Euclase a lot more. I'm not exactly sure why, but it just did. Probably the voice-acting sold me on their personalities.
I didn't like Bort from the beginning because of how they treated Phos as a waste of space, and continued to say so until Phos' legs/arms changed and they were able to help in the fight against Lunarians, but what do you like about Bort? I know they're protective of all the Lustrous which is very noble of them.
Euclase is in my top ten mostly because of her relation to Jade and she is super sweet and kind (and I agree she’s pretty as heck. Love her design.) Sensei is best gem dad! Glad to see him on your list! I agree with all your sentiments on Jade
Out of all the gems who don't get enough screentime I would easily give all of it to Jade, I just want to see more of her she's so goddamn precious. Agree on all of your sentiments, especially on seeing where Phos goes from here, it's going to be so interesting to see where they take her next. I'm glad you enjoyed my list!
i just noticed about this vid. My favorite is Antarticite, and then Phos. Because antarticite is probably the main caused of phos's actions even in the latest story in the manga.

And I know that was the whole idea. But that made her worse than dead weight almost every single time and the end, made her into, personally, something creepy. She was really likeable in the beginning but almost looked like everything was planned to stop that.

I never used to care about Euc, but after the anime and rereading the manga they’re one of my favorites. When you do your manga review, keep Euclases relationship to Dia in your mind, it’s pretty goddamn sweet. SO GLAD you’re giving Jaujau the love they deserve too!

I know Gems are gender-neutral, but I always saw most of them as female/feminine too. Calling them by male/masculine pronouns just feels...off, somehow. Anybody else with me?
I call them females too, although I think it's alright for people to refer to them however they want, there's a lot of confusion regarding it since they a) appear feminine b) the manga translations refer to them as he c) but they're actually genderless So it's like, just refer to them however you want, most people don't care either way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was the whole anime waiting to see the interaction between the mercury of cinnabar and the gold of phos (when they touch the mercury absorbs the gold making an amalgame) but i didn't get anything

my favourite scene of jade is chapter 91 it really makes me put thought into all the times jade tried to get in touch with phos or smth, like at the very start when rutile was blaming phos for smth and jade said rutile was being too harsh and rutile said jade was being too lenient or smth it also puts into perspective the relationship phos has with almost all the gems. stuff like how when phos isnt blamed after the 33 and 88 incident in the beginning phos says that it kinda feels worse and i think it's as zeroloid said that phos wants to be held responsible and not treated like someone incapable or a burden. there's also that the gems try to understand phos but fail, but i think of the ones this applies to jade seems to be the one who tried most in the background anyway padpa best gem phos is second phos even said phos wants to be like padpa when phos is older padpa wisest and possibly most apathetic gem
cinnabar deserved to be much higher. yes, your list, but right from the word "get-go", cinnabar broke and stole my heart. Phos' memory challenges only served to highlight how alone cinnabar is, to the point that "hope" is a foreign word to them...
wow i'm rly happy to hear that you're making another houseki video. it's great to have something to look forward to when there's no more new episodes. thank you for making this content. tbh i dont have much to say about my best gems because i decided the order mostly based on how loudly my brain goes "AAAAA" when i look at them. but antarc didnt make it into my top gems list because i was binch-reading the manga and he died probably less than 10 minutes after he was introduced. after that i didn't dare to get attached to him when rereading or watching the manga lol
I'm really happy that you enjoy the content! I like making videos for stuff after they've ended, it helps keep it alive for me, plus Houseki is something I love and have more stuff I want to say on it! I totally get that, that's the downside to binging stuff vs experiencing it weekly, waiting a week and having time to let stuff settle can make you appreciate certain elements more.
I'd LOVE a dub for Houseki but due to it being claimed by Amazon/Sentai, I'm not sure if we'll ever get it. Plus it'd take a lot to match up to how brilliantly they're voiced in the sub

Sure Phos is everyone's favorite, but it's main protagonist with THAT HUGE arcs of inner evolution, you can't feel it as an ordinary waifu. So, my personal pick would be Bortz! She is most comic and romantic character, but severely underused. With her constant F***OFF mask on her face, she could generate tons and tons of gags and situations, but...no, accept what you have...
Btw great selection. Although I like all the gems, I seem to like Bortz more than other people because I feel she has so many insecurities she hides or can't express as she is a brick wall when it comes to her softer emotions.
my top 10 after reading up to episode 93 (includes spoilers): 10. Phosphophyllite. I hate him so much but he has to make it into top 10 because I have a sneaking suspicion he's gonna save the world. 9. Diamond. Egotistic and shallow, a tragic character. Brownie points in remembrance of past Dia. 8. Jade. He seemed kinda bossy post evil Phos, but the years have really made him likeable. 7. Rutile. Ngl this one was pure vanity, he's insane but insane Rutile is hot af. 6. Alexandrite. Although he's been mooned (haha) he still has reason. 5. Benito. Still pure and has a sense of right and wrong even though, like Alex, has been mooned. Hated Neptunite but got over it to save the others. 4. Cinnabar. That "you fulfilled your promise" really hit it home. Plus he's super adorable getting excited over friends. 3. Euclase. Oh god I love you Euclase you are the voice of reason. 2. Adamant. I feel so bad for him and he's practically the protagonist now. 1. Bort. Jellyfish world domination. Lost the hair and now he's less hot, but the jellyfish make up for it.

I rewatched all of the anime yesterday.. and I remembered just how well Phos stood out with her facial expressions, body language (which took me by surprise when I first watched it since it's CG) and her amazing voice acting. If you've ever watched the 2-part video on youtube "Phos noises" anyone would see why she's rated so high. One of the best protagonists I've seen in a while.

I can't give up on HnK that quick, I don't want it to be over either ;_; If you love Phos' voice actress, I highly recommend watching Hibike Euphonium, she voices the main character of that series as well and there's an even LONGER list of Kumiko noises than there are Phos noises. I agree though, Tomoyo Kurosawa is a national treasure and I'm so happy she voiced Phos.
You got it right! Phos 100% is best gem. Which is great, being they are the main character. Though personally Adamant would be in my top five simply because of how... Tragic and deep his character is. Though I will admit I don't think I can think back objectively to this point in the anime for my vote. Haha

An unoriginal Girl *spoilers* He’s certainly more hot headed and more violent than Bort. Sure Bort did try to teach Phos a lesson in her own way while Cairingorm did it because he was pissed.
The voice acting was huge for me in choosing my favorite gems. Based on that alone I'd probably go with Phos first, Cinnabar (although she didn't get enough screen time, but still) and yellow over Dia.

I can't believe you put cinnabar at number 5. To me they are easily the most compelling character in the show, and are always phos' main reason for driving to get better. Phos' drive to help cinnabar find purpose was the closest thing to a central story line for the show (aside from the gems protecting each other from lunarian attacks). To me Cinnabar is the best character in the show. They are forced to isolate themself from the rest of the gems because they are literally toxic to them. They even create a toxic persona to discourage other characters from being around them. All of these behaviors are intentional and directly stem from the fact that Cinnabar cares so immensely about the other gems that they are willing to give up their needs of companionship to protect others from being harmed by cinnabar. This unfortunately causes cinnabar to want to "kill" themself, but the lunarians won't grant them that. This leaves cinnabar to the torment of isolation and phos' acts as their one hope of breaking out of that.
I love Cinnabar, I think the reason I put her so low is because of the little amount of screentime she got, otherwise I agree that I love her dynamic with Phos and also enjoy how nuanced her character is written

Your reason for Eucleus, I didn't realized it until I've read the manga. For the first few epi I'm too awestruck by the new world of the Lustrous, I need to rewatch this series. Thanks for this, your explanations of each characters made me appreciate LotL more. Also, curiously, a lot of reviewers on yt use female pronouns for the gems when the gems themselves used male pronouns (boku, ore, nii-san, etc) both in the anime and manga, even tho they are seemingly genderless. Regarding pronouns and speech patterns, I read that altho the gems mostly use male pronouns they have greatly varied speech patterns (feminine and masculine). Unlike the pronouns that I can easily noticed by watching the anime, I don't have enough Japanese language skill to understand wich gems use feminine speech pattern and which gems use masculine speech pattern or if they use it fluidly. Again this is only something that I personally wondering about. May I suggest making a video about this? An opinion/speculation about the gender identity, culture and society of the gems.
In the manga, phos team up with the lunarians..which is really awesome and I love it so much..but he bring along some other gems too and those gems are Yellow diamond, diamond, Alex, amethyst 84 (Im not sure if I spelled correctly) ,goshe, Benito( new gem if I'm not mistaken), Ghost (another new gem) and my favourite of all..padparascha.😆 and guess what? She's alive..like..ALIVE. No more sleeping. I'm so glad that I've read the manga...and now I'm waiting for the new chapter😍 Btw..love your video so much❤️

The manga has little bits of trivia about each gem at the start of each volume like how Bort enjoys being wrapped in cute animals like the jellyfish or how Fosufofiraito is the youngest and 300 years old, crazy.
Pros and cons of the characters in land of the lustrous. Pros: -they are all adorable -even the most bitchy gem is good Cons: -lack of doujins -unhentai-able

I love houseki no kuni because even tho this show looks bright and happy all the character has their own problems like dia he's jealous of bort even tho they're the same family and like yellow dia he's deperessed on losing four of his teammates and so on and i love pho's in word growth as a character he turned from the air headed lazy and clumsy character to someone who just completely lost themselves they seem fine on the outside but in the inside their suffering from a lot of reasons like humans do i love this anime way way to much and i need season 2
Luke Lewis apparently they’re all supposed to be androgynous, despite all of them having a very feminine appearance (I think I read somewhere that most of them were more androgynous in the manga disregarding a few gems who look more masculine/feminine). If you listen, the voice actors will use male terms and honorifics when talking to the other gems.

antarc's death is the full formation of phos's guilt complex, and she even has ptsd in the anime. I dont know how you can not come to this conclusion.

disappointed Morga didn't even get a mention. Love how haughty and self assured she is even though she fucked up big in episode 1. Love her banter with Phos.
Love Euclase, to me she feels like one of the older more mature gems. The way she handles the younger gems like Phos and Jade, Euc comes off as very knowing in a parental sort of way.
The Dia/Bort dynamic is very interesting. You can approach it from so many different angles. Bort never wants to lose another gem, and has put this massive burden on themself of being the most powerful. Bort pities Dias weakness but is so frustrated they have given up completely on helping Dia improve, and instead infantilizes her, but at the same time Bort looks up to Dia as a mentor and older sibling. That's just a small slice of 1/4 of this relationship dynamic. I could literally write pages about everything going on between them.
I could actually probably write at least 1 full page on every character in the series.. That's how you know a series has good characters
Also a fan of Morga, sad with her haircut after winter though, I liked her big bushy super saiyan hair.
I do regret not mentioning Morga, her banter with Phos in the first episode is part of the reason that I fell in love with the characters and interactions right off the bat, I hope she gets more screentime going forward.
And yeah the Dia/Bort relationship is so complex to analyze, that's part of the reason why I wanted to write an entire video on the subject just because they're so goddamn interesting.

So I'm not the only one that finds Euclase attractive. Good to know. The anime really made me appreciate Jade and Euclase a lot more. I'm not exactly sure why, but it just did. Probably the voice-acting sold me on their personalities.
DEFINITELY the voice actors that do it for me, especially Jade, the voice actress for Jade suits her flawlessly.

I didn't like Bort from the beginning because of how they treated Phos as a waste of space, and continued to say so until Phos' legs/arms changed and they were able to help in the fight against Lunarians, but what do you like about Bort? I know they're protective of all the Lustrous which is very noble of them.
Euclase is in my top ten mostly because of her relation to Jade and she is super sweet and kind (and I agree she’s pretty as heck. Love her design.)

And I know that was the whole idea. But that made her worse than dead weight almost every single time and the end, made her into, personally, something creepy. She was really likeable in the beginning but almost looked like everything was planned to stop that.

I know Gems are gender-neutral, but I always saw most of them as female/feminine too. Calling them by male/masculine pronouns just feels...off, somehow. Anybody else with me?

b) the manga translations refer to them as he
c) but they're actually genderless

it really makes me put thought into all the times jade tried to get in touch with phos or smth, like at the very start when rutile was blaming phos for smth and jade said rutile was being too harsh and rutile said jade was being too lenient or smth
it also puts into perspective the relationship phos has with almost all the gems. stuff like how when phos isnt blamed after the 33 and 88 incident in the beginning phos says that it kinda feels worse and i think it's as zeroloid said that phos wants to be held responsible and not treated like someone incapable or a burden. there's also that the gems try to understand phos but fail, but i think of the ones this applies to jade seems to be the one who tried most in the background

tbh i dont have much to say about my best gems because i decided the order mostly based on how loudly my brain goes "AAAAA" when i look at them. but antarc didnt make it into my top gems list because i was binch-reading the manga and he died probably less than 10 minutes after he was introduced. after that i didn't dare to get attached to him when rereading or watching the manga lol
I'm really happy that you enjoy the content! I like making videos for stuff after they've ended, it helps keep it alive for me, plus Houseki is something I love and have more stuff I want to say on it!
I totally get that, that's the downside to binging stuff vs experiencing it weekly, waiting a week and having time to let stuff settle can make you appreciate certain elements more.

Sure Phos is everyone's favorite, but it's main protagonist with THAT HUGE arcs of inner evolution, you can't feel it as an ordinary waifu.

She is most comic and romantic character, but severely underused.
With her constant F***OFF mask on her face, she could generate tons and tons of gags and situations, but...no, accept what you have...
As far as the TV adaptation is concerned, Cinnabar hasn't turned down Phos. Phos just says she'll come back to let her think on her proposition.
Btw great selection. Although I like all the gems, I seem to like Bortz more than other people because I feel she has so many insecurities she hides or can't express as she is a brick wall when it comes to her softer emotions.

10. Phosphophyllite. I hate him so much but he has to make it into top 10 because I have a sneaking suspicion he's gonna save the world.
9. Diamond. Egotistic and shallow, a tragic character. Brownie points in remembrance of past Dia.
8. Jade. He seemed kinda bossy post evil Phos, but the years have really made him likeable.
7. Rutile. Ngl this one was pure vanity, he's insane but insane Rutile is hot af.
6. Alexandrite. Although he's been mooned (haha) he still has reason.
5. Benito. Still pure and has a sense of right and wrong even though, like Alex, has been mooned. Hated Neptunite but got over it to save the others.
4. Cinnabar. That "you fulfilled your promise" really hit it home. Plus he's super adorable getting excited over friends.
3. Euclase. Oh god I love you Euclase you are the voice of reason.

I rewatched all of the anime yesterday.. and I remembered just how well Phos stood out with her facial expressions, body language (which took me by surprise when I first watched it since it's CG) and her amazing voice acting. If you've ever watched the 2-part video on youtube "Phos noises" anyone would see why she's rated so high. One of the best protagonists I've seen in a while.

If you love Phos' voice actress, I highly recommend watching Hibike Euphonium, she voices the main character of that series as well and there's an even LONGER list of Kumiko noises than there are Phos noises. I agree though, Tomoyo Kurosawa is a national treasure and I'm so happy she voiced Phos.

He’s certainly more hot headed and more violent than Bort. Sure Bort did try to teach Phos a lesson in her own way while Cairingorm did it because he was pissed.
The voice acting was huge for me in choosing my favorite gems. Based on that alone I'd probably go with Phos first, Cinnabar (although she didn't get enough screen time, but still) and yellow over Dia.
I can understand that, especially Phos, Tomoyo Kurosawa is one of the best voice actresses working today

I can't believe you put cinnabar at number 5. To me they are easily the most compelling character in the show, and are always phos' main reason for driving to get better. Phos' drive to help cinnabar find purpose was the closest thing to a central story line for the show (aside from the gems protecting each other from lunarian attacks).
To me Cinnabar is the best character in the show. They are forced to isolate themself from the rest of the gems because they are literally toxic to them. They even create a toxic persona to discourage other characters from being around them. All of these behaviors are intentional and directly stem from the fact that Cinnabar cares so immensely about the other gems that they are willing to give up their needs of companionship to protect others from being harmed by cinnabar. This unfortunately causes cinnabar to want to "kill" themself, but the lunarians won't grant them that. This leaves cinnabar to the torment of isolation and phos' acts as their one hope of breaking out of that.
I love Cinnabar, I think the reason I put her so low is because of the little amount of screentime she got, otherwise I agree that I love her dynamic with Phos and also enjoy how nuanced her character is written
My favorites are Jade, Yellow Diamond, and Antarcticite. Of course I love Phos and Dia too (and all the others honestly they’re so great)

Your reason for Eucleus, I didn't realized it until I've read the manga. For the first few epi I'm too awestruck by the new world of the Lustrous, I need to rewatch this series. Thanks for this, your explanations of each characters made me appreciate LotL more.
Also, curiously, a lot of reviewers on yt use female pronouns for the gems when the gems themselves used male pronouns (boku, ore, nii-san, etc) both in the anime and manga, even tho they are seemingly genderless.
Regarding pronouns and speech patterns, I read that altho the gems mostly use male pronouns they have greatly varied speech patterns (feminine and masculine). Unlike the pronouns that I can easily noticed by watching the anime, I don't have enough Japanese language skill to understand wich gems use feminine speech pattern and which gems use masculine speech pattern or if they use it fluidly. Again this is only something that I personally wondering about. May I suggest making a video about this? An opinion/speculation about the gender identity, culture and society of the gems.

I love houseki no kuni because even tho this show looks bright and happy all the character has their own problems like dia he's jealous of bort even tho they're the same family and like yellow dia he's deperessed on losing four of his teammates and so on and i love pho's in word growth as a character he turned from the air headed lazy and clumsy character to someone who just completely lost themselves they seem fine on the outside but in the inside their suffering from a lot of reasons like humans do i love this anime way way to much and i need season 2

Luke Lewis apparently they’re all supposed to be androgynous, despite all of them having a very feminine appearance (I think I read somewhere that most of them were more androgynous in the manga disregarding a few gems who look more masculine/feminine). If you listen, the voice actors will use male terms and honorifics when talking to the other gems.
