Honda XR650L Pulse Generator Clean and Carb Removal (in Stop Motion)

  • My XR650L would intermittently crank and not start after standing for a few days. I initially thought it was a flat battery or dirty battery terminals. In the end, the pulse generator gave a faulty reading. But after cleaning it, it read good. I filmed the process in stop motion. I also added some footage of me removing the carb (in stop motion). It is hard work!

    Probably my favorite video of yours. Stop motion is underrated in this application. Excellent!

      Thanks for this one! Glad someone noticed :) I love stop motion but it takes FOREVER to do. I'd love to try more of it with more consistent lighting. Thanks again

      As soon as I need another one, I will definitely make the video... So far no leaks! I was just over it from the stop motion 😂 Thanks for watching!

      I bet it's your CDI instead. That was my issue. But it was intermittent. For the pulse generator, measure the resistance between the blue/yellow and green/white terminals behind the steering stem. It should measure between 423Ω and 517Ω. If not, the pulse generator might be the issue. Good luck and let me know what you find!

    Is the pulse generator an actual generator and will it run with out a battery? May seem dumb to ask but curious.

      I'd also rather ask a dumb question and learn instead of being proud and staying ignorant. The pulse generator is a generator, but rather a trigger coil or pickup coil. It needs 12V from the stator to trigger the ignition spark. In the XRL it will run without the battery (as far as I know).

    Where did you buy the CDI from.... Honda? They are very expensive.....

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Johan. I bought it from Offroad Cycles in Pretoria. OEM at Honda was R3500. At ORC it is R2750 for the OEM one and R1850 for a resoldered one (plus you send in the old one).

      You can fix those CDI‘s by carefully taking them apart and re-soldering the connectors inside that’s the reason they fail is because the soldering comes apart inside it’s totally worth a shot when you’re in a position like you are where are you can’t readily get parts for that bike.

      @@earlgray4333 I think the real reason these welds crack and become a problem is because of the resonance and vibration inherent in the bike. I would suggest removing the rubber cover and let the CDI box dangle in its place so the vibrations are never the same for any long period of time.

    My 650l starts missing when I throttle up.Tried quite a few things.Could it be the pulse generator?

      @@mountaineer1706 yes the mixture screw seating has some problem. Carb body might be eroded or something

    Maybe take carb removal out of the title or put the carb removal in video?
