I’ve had my D90 for 14 years. I recently used it for two events after it sat unused for over one year. One event was indoors where I used a Nikon SB800 flash unit and the other event was outdoors in a park setting and under a huge oak tree. The camera performed flawlessly and I was so pleased with the photos the camera generated.
I'm a semi professional and have 3 Nikons, one being a D90. I recently had one of my other o es in the shop, and the D90 was my secondary camera with a wedding job. It was more than capable with what I used it for. I've also used it for portrait work with very good results. Mine does excellent with a 50mm, f/1.8. One of the best purchases I've made for $140! It had about 22,000 clicks on it when I bought it!
This isthe most accurate and detailed review of the D90 that I have seen. You make a interesting point of sensor quality vs Megapixel resolution. Image quality in terms of dynamic range, tonal range and color sensitivity the D90 is nearly the equal or the equal of the D7000 per DXO measurements. The Signal noise reduction is where the D90 falls comparably short at higher ISOs. IMO for photography you would need to step up to the D7100 to get a vastly superior camera. I own the D7100 as well and it is superb at low light performance. Great review! Another example is the Canon550d which has more megapixels than the D90 but falls significantly short on other measures giving the 550d a much lower overall DXO mark!!
Thank you for watching and also for comment. I didn't have any script, I tried when I first started but ended up talking like a robot so from then on I just talk about my experience based on what/how I remembered it. I think it's also a more genuine way to just talk about how I feel about the camera at the end of the day and if that helps some people, I'd be very happy. :-) Thank you very much again for watching and for the comment, really appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
It is indeed still a good camera that is still more than capable of producing great results. :-) Thank you so much for watching as well as for comment, very much appreciated it. I wish you a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
Regarding the ISO button placement - if you are shooting in aperture priority mode (which I think is the proper way to shoot in like 95% of the situations), you can program the other dial to change ISO right away, on the fly, no button presses necessary.
Really a pity, that it's not possible to use with D90 the newer AF-P lenses. I believe it's just the firmware that should be modified for this. Maybe should we sign kind of petition to Nikon, to make them release updated firmware at least for their two old „landmark” models,I mean D90 and D200, allowing to use AF-P lenses? How do you think? It's not a problem for such a big, potent company - just a question of their good will (or lack of).
Nikon won't give an 2008 tech DSLR body access to 2016 AF-P lenses - besides, their goal is Z mount only, nowadays. No more Nikon F mount. We're living at the end of 2024 - and that's the fact. Besides, AF-P lenses could being seen simplified as STM lenses, P stands for pulse, so stepper motor AF drive. Into contrast, the D7000 (2010) can use AF-P lenses with a few restrictions (like VR is always on, couldn't be disabled, etc.)
@@marcp.1752 yes, we're living at the end of 2024 - and look: at the end of 2024 I'm still using my DSLRs and I'm not going to get rid of them, since all they give good quality pictures and they are good enough for me. It would be kind on Nikon's side, BTW, to support their customers - like by updating the firmware for their older cameras. It wouldn't cost them that much. Or by opening the firmware (github?) for independent developers, that could do the work, if Nikon doesn't care anymore.
David Cuhls !!!!!!!!!! I somehow missed this Video before, so late comment here. This was a ground breaking camera at the time, offering Video in a DSLR for the first time. It was a natural progression of the D70/70s/80 series of cameras. It was a camera with very zealous users, and was popular. Personally, I would go for a D300, which offered so much more, but this is a solid camera. Take care and Happy Shooting!
Don't worry too much about the late comment, I made these videos to be somewhat "timeless" so don't worry too much. I am already very happy that you continue to watch my videos as well as commenting on them, this really means a lot. Yeah, the D90 is a great camera and one that still produces great results. I was indeed very popular for the features and quality that it offers for the price. Even today, the quality of this camera is still outstanding. I thank you so much for watching as well as for your very kind words. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
More than capable for an amateur enthusiast like me !! - If you just want to shoot stills in decent light then it's excellent - I had one for five years and sold it along with some other Nikon gear - I went to Micro four thirds - A Panny GX8...within six months I sold it and bought another D90 and a couple of lenses. With a 35mm F1.8 DX attached you don't know it's over your shoulder most of the time...Mine was £90 , fully boxed ....great bang for your buck !!
Yes, I use that same exact setup! Aperture mode, and I don't need to think too much about the technical stuff - just find the right framing, get the depth of field the way I like it, and shoot 🙂
My wife has a D80 and loves it so much she finds it hard you use any other camera I’ve shot canon all my life Notting megga expensive so I used her D80 I love the images that came out of the camera no editing very much like film so I now have the D90 for myself and love it so easy to use I’ve also purchased the 35 f1.8 G I really think canon could learn a thing or two with this lens and price on the second hand market it’s a real bargain
I made UW pics in the Red Sea with my D90 and the stuff was acceptable. My hundreds of images of my image bank was made with D90 and the result was very good. I like the camera very much but not for video. After some years the camera is still working very well.
The 18-105 works alright on it, and it was often sold with the camera back in the day, as a "kit" lens, but I personally prefer some other lenses. One great one which is really small and light but great quality is the Nikkor 35mm F 1.8 DX lens, which you should be able to find for a bit under $100 USD. It's a prime lens, so of course no zooming, but you can often "zoom with your feet" - moving around until you find the right angle and framing. And it's a "fast" lens, so you can get a pretty narrow depth of field with a more wide open aperture, which works nice for portraits and certain other types of shots. If you're looking for a cheap (but decent quality) zoom lens though, then I'd recommend the Nikon version of the Sigma 18-250. I actually sold my Nikkor 18-105 for more than what I paid for that lens, and now I've got more than twice the zoom range.....Of course it, like the 18-105 kit lens, isn't the most super high quality glass, but for general shooting in bright light you get decent enough results 🙂
The non-VC Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is often lauded as one of the best ASP-C zooms. It's out of production I'm afraid, but with people switching to full frame and mirrorless, it shouldn't be hard to pick up a good copy used for very reasonable amounts of dough. I myself felt 50mm on the long end rather limiting on an ASP-C standard zoom, so my pick was the Sigma 17-70 VC (C, so the newer Contemporary edition) which although darker by a stop on the long end, is much more versatile AND has VC that works really rather well. Very good build quality, good image quality, decent macro-ish capability, it's an all around step up from the 18-105 in my opinion.
Oh I see, but doesn't Singapore also have other second hand platforms? Maybe it is also worth looking into the local online second hand platform(s) and also the second hand platforms in nearby countries like Malaysia (or even Thailand)? Then the shipping wouldn't be so expensive. I hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting :-)
The 550d has a much better iq?? David, what are you saying here?!? Never! I have both and it is a 100% the other way around! And.. look at the results of DXOMARK if you can not compare these two models. I don`t understand why you are spreading those things to people watching your videos. Disappointing.
Thank you for watching and for your feedback. I am deeply sorry that my thoughts on this camera disappointed you. As I do use both cameras as well, my results in the way that I've used, I just found that the image quality on the 550d gives a sharper and more detailed results. Furthermore, it is better in lowlight and with the higher megapixel count, you can trade the resolution to clean up the noise and further than the D90 would allow. The rendition in the skin tones (which is a big factor for me) is much better on the 550D than the D90. However, this is only subjected to the way I shoot and handle the cameras. I am deeply sorry and did not mean to offend you in any way. I will do my best to improve my future contents. I thank you very much again for watching and for the kind feedback. I wish you a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting
Hmm, I had both too and wow, what a difference!:) But, David, I AM sorry, because I didn't want to offend you! But I was sooooo in love with the D90 that it just hurts;) I loved the 500d almost the same way but the output was not that perfect to me. Beside that I totally enjoy your reviews and they help me a lot. Just ordered a 30D with kit lens for 38 euros:)
The D550D with its dated, inferior old 2009 18 MP APS-C Sensor isn't better - by no means, doesn't make a cut on the D90, for real. It's beginners DSLR, and clearly showed it. Canon used that old Sensor into >40 DSLRs and even DSLMs, just crazy. It all depends onto the lenses. I shoot Canon, Nikon and other brands for decades.
The Nikkon D90 & D80 are used bargain if you can find a good one! The D80 apart from the video aspect, is exactly the as the D90. I have both cameras, I have two D80's one is in fault, the dreaded ERR a issue that if simple solutions do not cure it, then it is a camera shop repair job, yes expensive. The other D80 is OK up to now it has just over 8000 shutter count. The D90 was going great a nice feel& grip to the camera, then for no reason this one went into error, another ERR SYMBOL. I have tried every hint on the net provide you will also see TH-cam vids showing how to make certain repairs, this is opening up the guts of the camera, none of which are guaranteed fixes. I have bought these from eBay, and I'll state further you'll see a good number of these up for spares or repair, ask the sellers about the issues, my guess they are mostly if not all are have this ERR displayed. I can only recommend it to my experience STAY AWAY, a bargain is a rarity with these two models!!!

I am devastated as my D 90s shutter went south and stuck 😢Shop wants 160 to repair it. I have to get it fixed.
Just picked up my D90. Works great with prime lenses and fixed aperture lenses.
D90 seems pretty decent, might get one if I stumble upon a affordable copy
Mid 2024, I'm still using my D90. Mostly with my 80-200 f/2.8 push pull. 👍
Me too... !!! And i will forever... even when having newer ones from Nikon as well. 😄
I must not let David lead me into temptation... I have too many cameras....I must not let David le........
Right I have just purchased a z 50 along with old used DSLRs.
Very detailed video. I am thinking about starting a Nikon item.

i bought this used at keh, to replace my d3100 after 14years

Great review..uses the word actually a lot..
Any way for a clean HDMI out?
Still a decent camera for photo album pictures
My Camera❤❤❤❤❤
How do you manually expose for video on this guy
What's the best or one of the best lens for D90?

get a 50mm 1.8d and its tack sharp. underrrated but rock solid pair
you can buy the 16-80 zoom lens
I live in singapore and the problwm with buying a camera from eBay is the 50 to 100 dollar shipping fee which is just unfortunate

The d90 was designated a "prosumer camera" halfway between amateur and professional.
Io ce l' ho ancora e la uso regolarmente.....ed ho 95`000 scatti!!! 👍😉🇮🇹
I had one
