    There is an alternative to destroying the nanban port. In my otomo campaign i basically upgraded it to nanban quarter, made a few nanban trade ships and then caused a rebellion. At that point you just build it in buzen and as soon as the nanban quarter starts to build you can retake your original capital, thus gaining an extra port to build trade ships on top of the accuracy bonus for tercos at buzen. It's also worth noting that while the settlement remains in rebel control, the quarter will keep spreading christianity onto the adjacent provinces.

    What the hell? Reduced missionary cost not useful? Honestly as the Otomo, they've been the most powerful asset. Given that you fight on two fronts, having a missionary go through a larger faction, causing revolts forcing them to stop focusing on you and on putting down this revolt, if not making them lose provinces. Do this enough and they lose most of their income. This makes them less likely to attack you and it makes their ability to field large armies to attack. It allows you to focus on one front.

    • @warvester
      @warvester 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Aleksandar Ivanov the same can be said for ikko ikki, however, they have NO bonuses to success chance. The cost is negligible late game when armies take precedence and realm divide, where everyone hates you. Early game, reduced cost is nice, but not too noteworthy. Just my 2 cents.

      Revolts are literally like.
      Revolt army spawns with a lot of Strong Ronins....> AI Proceeds to attack them with a army of Ashigarus > the AI Win > They don't lose even 10% of their forces > AI proceeds to do what they were doing like nothing happened.
      Seriously, i was extremely disappointed the first time i tried Inciting Revolts, its pure garbage, it don't deal any damage to the AI at all, once a Revolt spawned 12 Ronins with a General, a AI with 2 Samurais and 14 Ashigarus kicked their ass without losing even 10% of their army, so the only thing got from doing all this revolt thing was lose time and money...

    A tip for army composition: Get yourself some sort of artillary. Any kind of artillary will do, its just there to make the enemy come towards you, even when you are the one attacking. This might seem like a very gerneral tip, but its especially effective if you use many matchlock units. If you can position yourself the slope of a hill, you can make much better use of your matlocks, since you can do 2 or even 3 firing lines, as the slope will allow your units to shoot over each other instead of being blocked by the unit in front of it. In that way, you can use a large amount of matchlocks much more effectively.

    I like how the game calls those Portuguese handgunners "Tercios" when "Tercio" refers to a special formation that combines pikes and guns, not to a type of infantry. You can recreate the tercio formation in the game (albeit it won't be as useful as it was in real life), but you don't need the Portuguese units for that.

    • @juandavidrestrepoduran6007
      @juandavidrestrepoduran6007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Haven’t played but seeing the game, Long Yari Ashigaru+ “Tercos”+ another complimentary unit, for example Matchlock Samurai for more numbers in fire power or more devastating power via Tokitaka Tanegashima, would be needed to recreate a Tercio (if possible under a mode because otherwise it’s impossible since Otome have the best guns while Oda has the unit most closely resembling Tercio Pikemen and everyone knows no other spear unit comes close).The firepower would be kind of redundant with 2 units using it, but since the use of sword+shield is inexistent, it means there’s no unit filling the function of rodeleros (helping the pikemen to retain their formation vía killing intruding enemies, disrupting enemy formations, etc...), therefore the Tercos who are decent enough with swords and armour should fill the role, plus, no one gets hurt from having more guns, they're way more beneficial than having a sword-specialized unit.

    • @ScurvyBoi
      @ScurvyBoi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      AFAIK "Tercos" is the portuguese word for "tercios" and IIRC it is a copy or imitation of the spanish tercios, or the intent of them.
      I don't know the full story behind it, but supposedly since tercios were so effective people copied them, and since Portugal was pals with Spain they got to research and observe tercios very frequently, and so "copied" them.
      I could be wrong though

    Who felt that Otomo clan DLC is a little bit rushed and could of been better had the developers spent more time. I would of like the Otomo to more unique than the other clan faction and went deeper into their history.how in the past they were once great allies of Ashikaga shogunate and they were rewarded high positions in the goverment. However with weakening of the Ashikaga, the Otomo have begun grown wary as their rivals are no longer being held in check and fear that their ambitions will soon bring war to the lands of the Otomo. With their old friends unable to help anymore the Otomo have begun establish trade relationships with the Europeans who have begun to arrive in recent years.

    In my opinion Portugeese Tercos got quite enough accuracy, and personally I recomend to all of you build the Nanban Quarter in Satsuma instead, and give tercos additional armor/melee atack. This will make them even better main line of troops, and you won't need to recruit Katana samurai/naginata samurai anymore. Just tercos, some cav and spearmen (or more yari cav).

      I know that you're busy and that making a video isn't a simple task, especially when you already have so much work to do. But i wonder if you could make a video covering _"Trade"_ : the mechanics, how does it works, how does it impact the economy and, in regard of naval trade route, how does the different "trade class" ships would perform cost/profit wise.
      Like you pointed out, the Otomo have the opportunity to quickly gain control of four trade routes, essentially being able to obtain complete monopole over two of them (Incense, Cotton) which can heavily impact on late-game army composition (legendary units/building requiring said luxury ressources.) So i thought it would be interesting if you could covering the subject in more details.

      They are the most powerful ship in the game and available relatively early for the Otomo, and the only Buddhist counterpart is the cannon bune, which can only be fielded in extremely limited numbers an much later in the game. The Otomo have a better early game ship set-up than the Mori: the clan designed to have the most powerful navy.

    I do use Lease land sometimes. A good Otomo rush tactic is to take Hyuga, Loot it, and build leased land on all the spots and then abandon it to rebels it turns a near worthless region into a good quick buck. I will also do it late mid game when I want to turtle before realm divide. Take territory Lease the land and abandon it to rebels. If one of the other clans takes it they will be severely limited in what they can do with it.

    Grrr the Otomo. The most hated and bitter rivals of the glorious Shimazu. Just the other day I started up a Shimazu Very Hard campaign with the extended regions/clans mod and 12 turns a year mod too. By the time I was waging war with the Otomo, they were able to field four full stacks while I only had 2 stacks, barely scraping by economy wise. I'll admit I loaded many savepoints more than a couple times to figure out how to survive.
    I managed to isolate two stacks and win a battle over them, which actually was enough for the Otomo to accept peace when I requested it. Then I went on my way spamming Buddhist temples and monks, building up my gold overtime while I held an unsteady peace and trade agreement with the Otomo. They were occupied with various other Kyushu clans and the Mori, and while they were suffering losses I started to sabotage a bunch of buildings with my ninja and cause revolts with my monks (taken from your agents video, previously I only did assassinations and passives). Since I was at peace the Otomo basically let their lands be taken by the rebels first and then by me. I've essentially crushed them with monks and now I'm building up an invasion force for an actual war again.
    The AI is funny and not very intelligent in many aspects, but Very Hard can be very hard for a player like me, so screw these guys and their resilience against Shimazu domination. Kyushu is mine!

      @hui-an-xin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually I played a few more turns after I commented, and now the Otomo only have 2 regions left with 1 and 1/2 army stacks. They've been pushed out of their original lands and they have no access to any harbors either. I surround them with at least 4 armies of armor-bonus katana samurai. It's only a matter of time before they crumble.

    • @hui-an-xin

      Oh and by the way historically the Shimazu actually had some level of tolerance for Christians, as Kyushu was the main source of contact for the world outside of Japan. The Shimazu historically managed to defeat the Otomo (well not conquer) and had a huge role in developing Kyushu well into the Meiji Restoration. Christianity is barely practiced today in Japan anyway, though there are notable communities in Kyushu and surrounding islands like Tanegashima or Goto. A lot of churches and stuff built there by the Portuguese or Jesuits. But hardly prevailing over us barbarians.

    Wouldnt armor be better for tercos and other matchlock units? It would protect them from archer fire and would help tercos in melee, because accuracy doesnt seem very important to matchlock units in my expierience

    • @LuizAlexPhoenix
      @LuizAlexPhoenix 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your use of them. You can have them to shoot infantry and retreat behind your line or have your infantry charge forwards. You can also set them in the flanks and/or try using them for sniping.
      In any of those cases, you will want accuracy. I usually do the foremost, copying a pike and shoot tactic. They damage mainline units and retreat to safety, never really needing much defense. You can use cav to attack enemy skirmishers. Donderbuss and Yari cav can both be devastating for that.

    I have one major exploit to the nanban tradeport. In my campaign I purposely allowed my main province to be captured, allowing me to build another nanban port in Buzen. I then recaptured my home province and voila I had 2. The reason I did this is to capitalize on the pirate bonus for my crews on my european trade ships and cash in on the economy boost. And ofcourse now I can recruit with the accuracy bonus in buzen.

WOW.....just a couple of hits from those cannons sent the entire AI fleet running. It was honestly kind of boring, since the ships fire so damn far, I basically hit start, turned broadside and fired....game over.

    A high level Missionary can be extremely effective. He can disrupt a marching army or cripple the economy of enemy clans. You simply start a christian revolt. If left unattended the revolt will take the settlement and to stop the revolt the enemy has to use his armies. On top of that settlements held by christian rebels slowly convert to Christianity, which is nice considering the problem of religious unrest

    Can you still upgrade the nanban trade port to a nanban quarter if you move it? I noticed you didn't mention the Nanban trade ship at all in this overview, and I always thought having one fleet with a nanban trade ship to smash the mori clan and achieve naval hegemony was always a big boon for the Otomo.

    • @MrSmartDonkeyLP
      @MrSmartDonkeyLP  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can, that's the whole point of moving the Nanban port, so you can get increased accuracy on your Portuguese Tercos, if you couldn't rebuild the Nanban Quarter, that would be entirely pointless. You just can't build more than 1, which is why you have to get rid of your first one. I didn't mention Nanban Trade ships because they aren't exclusive to the Otomo, anyone can build them, as long as they become Christian.

    While Shogun 2 is easily an S tier game, one thing I will never understand is why guns are so rare and often not worth going for. Like, just looking it up, Oda Nobunaga ordered 500 matchlocks for his army in -1549-. Granted, 500 is relatively small amount for an army numbering thousands, but I don't know, the rarity of guns in Shogun 2 is just bizarre to me.
