Fun fact: Mario was originally going to carry a handcannon in the first Super Mario Bros., but Miyamato shut the idea down. So, it's funny that almost 10 years later, Nintendo's mascot was allowed to live his dream as a gunslinger for one game.

I thought I would find someone in the comments for this video mentioning that! It's funny to think that family friendly Mario could be sporting a firearm had things went differently back then.

Ah, so similar to Link’s Crossbow training where the initial concept was to send Link to the future for full assault rifle action before they dialed it back to a magic crossbow in Twilight Princess.
I swear there’s a gun addiction hidden deep within Japan just waiting to get out. Even with the Smash 4 global results they always picked characters with guns(America picked punching characters and Europe loves it’s swords)
Note: I’m all for it. Give the Nintendo bois more firepower! 🔫

@@rickpgriffin The battery life was really not that big a deal, they would last several multi-hour sessions for weeks if you remembered to switch it off. I would even constantly switch it off during non-interactive sections where I'm waiting for something to stop exploding and such, extending play time even further. There was one time when my stepbrother went in my room and played with it without asking me and left me with dead batteries because he left it turned on. I have never forgiven him.

Dylan's closing message is a good one. I didn't think I'd like any sports related games as a kid, but my cousin convinced me to give the wrestling games on SNES a shot and man... we played Royal Rumble long into the night. 13:08 If it’s Gunstar Heroes, it’s no doubt the Best Genesis game ever made. It was one of the greatest independent games of the era, and would spawn a legendary line of video games afterwards from the company that made it, stretching 3 generations. Damn, Yoshi's Safari! When I was a kid my parents bought the Nintendo Scope second hand from my neighbour, but it only had the 6 game "compilation" which was pretty boring. But years later I won a contest from Spanish magazine Nintendo Acción and got Yoshi's Safari and Battleclash, probably the best two games for the Scope. I remember making my younger brother play YS with me in the 2 players mode, he used the pad and I took charge of the Scope. I think we never finished the game, it wasn't that easy! Goood times.

Dylan little blurb at the end about not letting people get to you on things you like is very good advice. Also gonna have to find that ost now.
Super bomber man was one of those games I always rented at my local Aardvark entertainment (rental store) as they rented systems and accessories so got the multitap too. Was always fun for parties, and then playing 3 player Secret of Mana, or FF6 four player.
Best run and gun hmm? Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, or Contra Hard Corps.

5:50 "the concept of a home console allowing more than two people was practically unheard of." Both the NES and Game Boy each had a four player adaptor before the Multi-Tap was created. The ability to have four players on home consoles was pretty heard of, by that point.

Super Bomberman was an amazing game! The co-op story was really fun too! Got to the last boss on a 7 day rental and couldn't figure out how to beat him with my brother since he flew above the stage and never came down. It wasn't until we got Super Bomberman 2 for Christmas that we realized that all of the hands the last boss gave us were for throwing bombs in the air. Super Bomberman 1 is to this day my all time favorite Bomberman game and I really wish it would get a re-release.

How funny, the SNES Alien vs. Predator game _is_ the first thing I think of when AvP games are brought up
mainly because it left quite an impression on young me emulating random games with ZSNES
I got from, I think a cousin's floppy back in the early 00s. And I agree with Dylan, speaking of
the music in Redline isn't just great, but reminds me a lot of Japanese Jazz Fusion. And that is _very_ good

As a kid I remember seeing ads for the Super Scope and not even knowing what it was for. I've never even held one. Now, with all the overdesigned peripherals we've seen in the decades since, I can't even imagine being five and hoisting that thing on my shoulder for a whole play session. The NES Zapper itself is only remembered for Duck Hunt, but it's a much better peripheral because it's easy for *anyone* to hold and aim.

  • @WhiskeyNixon

I got Yoshis Safari as a kid, beat it in like 1/2 an hour, thought it was really lame, told my Dad, then wound up back at Target watching my Dad get super pissed at the clerk when he told us we couldn't exchange the game once it was open. That game was hella lame. Then I talked him into buying me Capcom's Aladdin anyways, soooo.. that was pretty cool. edit: 4:10 I think X-Zone by Kemco might be the best Super Scope game I played back in the day, much aided by the ability to put an aiming reticle on the screen by holding the cursor button, so you could fire the SS from the hip and avoid the fatigue inherent with holding your arms up for extended periods. Good action, good music.

  • @GmodPlusWoW
    @GmodPlusWoW ปีที่แล้ว +1

Weirdly enough, I feel like a modern version of Yoshi's Safari could be pretty tight.
That said, I reckon they'd need more weapon variety. Perhaps the NES Zapper could be the rapid-fire, and the Super Scope would be the heavy-hitter, while also having a Hammer for enemies that are better dealt with up-close. Meanwhile, Mario would be able to throw special attacks with his offhand; stuff like fireballs, snowballs, superballs, boomerangs, Koopa shells, bananas, etc. With that said, offhand specials would probably only be for Zapper and Hammer, since the Super Scope would need two hands, though it'd probably have multiple firing modes to compensate: one launching a homing Bullet Bill, the other launching a "dumbfire" Bobomb.

Just from the clips, Yoshi's Safari looks like it could have been fun, but likely would have been one of those "not worth the investment" situations, since you'd have to buy the Super Scope just to play that and maybe one or two other games. (unless you were all-in on the scope, and decided to go out of your way to collect all those games)

I thought the first Alien/Predator crossover was the xenomorph skull on the trophy wall in Predator 2.

I remember renting Battle Cars way back when! It was certainly a great mix of Mario Kart and F-Zero and it had 2-Player split-screen! I also remember there being a cheat code revealed after you beat the game that let you play in the top-down "Micro Machines" perspective the ending cutscene would show you. (It also made the game slightly easier by not spawing the crushers that'd appear when time ran out in the qualifying stages, basically giving you infinite time to farm credits to upgrade your car!)

I've been watching and enjoying this series since day one, and I'm so glad to see it climb to 50k subscribers already. This stuff may have been before my time, but it's still super enjoyable just to learn about what the gaming scene was like back in the day when my parents were still just dating.

I chewed Bazooka Gum when I was a kid. They had water tattoos in some of them and others had tiny comics telling the tales of Bazooka Joe. Toys and candy were tied together in cool ways back then along with those quarter machines.

I have no clue when it came out (info on these in general is limited) but your coverage of Yoshi's Safari reminded me of the Shooters Series light gun. They came bundled with Yoshi's Safari, or Battclash or Metal Combat. I have 2 of them, but never have found a Yoshi's Safari bundle.
They're a lot like the Sega Saturn light gun, and it's a good no-batteries option for the SNES.

Playing Super Bomberman with many players is still an amazing experience today.
Super Bomberman III is my favorite one (5 is quite nice, too, but I really appreciate the simplicity of the third one).

I'd be willing to bet serious money that the reason the super scope looks more like a bazooka/rocket launcher is because of Nintendo's constant urge to be kid friendly. Nintendo of America didn't want people wielding guns like they did with the zapper and wanted to make this peripheral even more distant from any real world weapon. They wanted it to be more like a toy then a real world firearm.

Yoshi's Safari was one of those games I always wanted to play, but couldn't justify asking my parents to buy a big accessory just for one game.
Years later I'm still terribly curious about the game. I really should give it a try.

Good ol' Bazooka gum. Starts out like a rock and becomes chewy after about 5 minutes of gnawing on it. 😄
