    Can I just say how much I love this. This is why I love TH-cam. You have these mega TH-cam stars in LA and huge huge channels and then we have Geoff and Vicki. Two quite ordinary Londoners off on an incredible journey and we are all here watching. So thank you everyone for making this possible

    Ahh you guys are quick to pick up on the Motte / Moat conundrum. I think I may have miss spoke. Motte = mound in the centre of the bailey (hill with the keep)?? Moat = ditch round the outside. Some of my castle knowledge has been pushed out over the years and replaced with trains! But it's slowly coming back to me. Still love a good castle!

      V Pipe have a look at Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey if yo have time and the train runs at the foot of Conwy castle. you can also see Gwick not sure of the spelling. and Penrhyn both mock castles and I think you may also be see Rhuddlan. all in N Wales. And Stokesay by the tracks in Shropshire between Ludlow and Craven Arms nearer Craven Arms on the right side heading north

      Me too. I used to play chess, and I think a well-timed castle is A Good Thing. Norwich Castle is now one of the City Museums, sitting on a Whopping great motte, and there are clear signs of its moat at the foot. To add to the confusion - Mott The Hoople!

    • @kernowboy137
      @kernowboy137 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course both Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle are relatively recent in terms of castle design. They are artillery forts built during the reign of Henry VIII, between 1540 and 1542. So any resemblance to a Norman Motte-and-bailey is purely subjective.

    Great video.
    For the people outside of the UK, it might be interesting to have a map each day, and show which lines/stations you're tackling that day. Doing so for each train you take would be even better. (It didn't escape my notice that there was a scene in front of a map, but that was rather fast).

    • @djfun
      @djfun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      this map unfortunately only has the stations but not the lines connecting them. Also having to click on them individually even to only show their names doesn't help for getting an overview. I can also not figure out the order in which you have visited the stations, but maybe I am missing something that is already implemented.
      I otherwise very much enjoy the videos!

    I wish to point out that, in a "motte and bailey" castle, "motte" doesn't mean "moat." A "motte" is a small mound or hill in the centre of the castle, on which the keep (the large central building) was built. Most castles (including Pendennis) aren't actually motte-and-bailey layouts, partly because the vast majority had a wood palisade rather than a stone wall, which, obviously, rots.
    In fact, technically speaking, Pendennis Castle isn't a castle at all. It's a type of structure known as a "device fort," or "artillery fort," built to house cannons to fire at approaching ships (as opposed to stopping armies on land). This is the main reason it's on a hill; to increase the range of the guns.
    Also, you may be wondering, if "motte" isn't the word for a moat, what is? Well, we're getting into highly technical detail now, but the technical term for a moat is "moat."

    The vessel in the dry dock is a ship, not a boat. Ships are designed for the sea, boats for rivers. But submarines are also called boats.

    You two have so much happy energy, it's great! :D I'd watch all your videos if I could, but my brain's sensitive to noise & stuff, so as with many channels, I'll just watch what I can. Visiting all the stations is an ambitious project! :D So was Craig's hike! (9:00) I used to drive along the South Coast between Worthing and Wareham; lovely areas.
    I need to get me my energy back. I'll never be all that energetic IRL in this life, but I used to be a high-energy pixie online, that was fun. }^.^{ It seems fruit smoothies, some basic food supplements, walking and maybe cycling is the way to go. Plus _something_ to, um, reduce the bulk I have to shift, :p but if I reduce my energy intake my brain stops working. O.o I'll figure it out. Fiber's supposed to be a bit of a miracle cure in these matters.

    Regarding castles being on top of a hill, I think the name of this is perhaps a little unimaginative...if Cornish is the same as Welsh, Pen/Penn = head/top (of the hill), Dinas = settlement/hill fort/city.

      As an aside, there's a place in the Rhondda called Dinas. It has a station, on the Treherbert branch of the Valley Lines.

      There's also a station at Dinas Powys on the Barry Island branch.

    You missed a little gem of a city in Truro. After spending the weekend in Falmouth we made a point of creating a three hour connection window to have a look around. If it's possible to fall in love with a place in such a short time it happened to me! Or is it just infatuation?
