Fat Doctor UK vs LBC Radio. You CANNOT Lose Weight and Keep it Off

    'The Fat Doctor UK' featured on LBC radio, and snippets of this interview started making their way around social media.
    On one side of the argument, if you eat fewer calories and exercise more, you will lose weight. Not a particularly controversial position to hold.
    On the flip side, you CANNOT lose weight for more than a few months at a time and eventually you will regain that weight.
    Unfortunately, whilst this kind of journalistic argument about weight loss and dieting is great for clicks, it's actually pretty useless at informing you as the audience.
    So, what's the truth? Is the Fat Doctor UK correct in that you will definitely regain weight in the first few months?
    Let's discuss the science, but more importantly let's discuss the nuance that's being overlooked.

    this doctor uploded a TikTok video about her beginning her weight lose journey and documenting it. She instantly failed her diet then proceeded to delete her first video about the weight lose journey and turned into a body positivity person.

    I would find it easier to buy into set point theory if they weren't claiming that their set point is so ridiculously high.

    Nowadays I say weight is a factor hinging on your lifestyle. Temporary diets will never work and never fix anything. But permanent changes to your lifestyle will permanently change your weight.

    I recently found your videos & I've been binge watching them. Your book arrived today & I have already started it. I've struggled with my weight since I hit puberty. My dad used to refer to me as " baby elephant" in front of family & friends. Did some emotional damage with that. I'm now 58 & about 60 lbs over where I should be. I've tried the last 10 years especially to lose weight but can't seem to lose more than a pound or two no matter how little or what I eat. I struggle with clinical depression, PTSD, and anxiety & am in therapy & on medication for these issues. Maybe they are affecting my weight loss attempts? Anyway, I think your videos are amazingly honest, educational, and very motivational. Thank you for what you're doing. Now off to read your book! 🤗

    Genetics... most people in my family are overweight to a degree, some more than others. I'm 50, disabled-- multiple reasons plus arthritis in my back and knees, etc, but I hit 300 lbs and I'm only 5'5" tall. I'm nearly as big around as I am tall.
    Joking! Only slightly! I do have good muscles like my shoulders and pecs, glutes, calves especially..., but I've insulated it :)
    I've changed my diet, no added sugars, starting gently and carefully to just be more active. I haven't lifted weights in decades, but I don't remember much of the details. I also got the X3 Bar because it's gentler on the joints than lifting free weights and can't go to a gym (eyes, can't drive).
    I've lost over 10 lbs. It's not much, but it's a start, and I'm as pleased as punch with it! That whole back and forth debate-- it's so damaging to one's confidence and drive to say in such a negative manner that one is destined to fail. I've listened to that my whole life-- which is probably why I'm still fat. Kind of like smoking cigarettes, you have to mentally be ready to change and have to have the umpfff and hopefully the support to change. Nothing great ever happened through the fear of making mistakes and not trying.
    So, some can eat and lay about all they want and never worry about their weight; some of us aren't so lucky. As I've gotten older, I've learned all the more to love a challenge, love doing what people say I can't do. So yeah, I may be genetically pre-dispositioned to be fat, but that's why it's called MAINTENANCE: No work, No "Gains". I can make excuses or I can make changes.

    Dropped four stone at 30 and kept skinny pretty easily for ten years until I got pregnant, went back to skinny weight after a year. It’s harder now to keep it off after menopause but I maintain at a halfway point. If I had just given up at 30 I would have probably got even fatter and my life would have been far less enjoyable. My weight gain was due to medication for hyperthyroid. So I see both sides. On my medication there was no way I could lose weight - metabolism counts as well as hunger.

    Set point is behavioural not biological. We are creatures of habit over course of months or years we tend to eat similar food so we get to the weight that what we eat takes us to. If we change that you can't magically gain weight. Problem is that changing that long term is super hard and many return to old habits after a while

    Ok so I used to weigh 330 pounds now I weigh 260 (I lost the 100 pounds over 10 years ago). I did lose over a hundred pounds early on and have kept a bit of it off. Keeping it off was/is a huge challenge. I am always looking for genetic reasons to stay obese but the fact is I am fat because of decisions early in life and a want for immediate results now. I think at this point the best I can do is find a weight I am comfortable with but is not my ultimate body type / goal.

    Some people love to spin a certain rhetoric so that they can convince themselves that they are right. Yes people lose weight on diets and put it back on. So many people are burnt out from stupid short term fad diets that they think weight loss is impossible. They haven't yet fully understood HOW weight loss works. When someone learns HOW it works then they will learn that they actually do have some control.
    I lost 18KG of weight a few years back and admittedly I've regained 6kg, I have kept off the other 12kg after ten years.

    On 07/02/2009 I was 23st/322lbs/146kilos. I started to lose weight and got down to 13st about 4 years later. Cut to 2023 and I’m now 14st. I went back up to nearly 16st during lockdown but I’ve lost 2st of that. I find keeping it off harder than losing it. And it never comes off quickly.

    Considering the average doctor may do half a day on nutrition over their 6 years studying I'll take no lessons from an obese GP with obvious mental issues about her own body image whilst spreading the 'it's not your fault' message to her clients.

    What bs from that woman. Started 5 years ago. Went from 165kg to 100kg now stable for the last 2 years, now trying to get to 90kg through weight training and running. My diet has not changed in the last year and a half. It’s a diet but not a temporary one.

    Weight management service provide 1 year and longer term weight loss, followed by weight management interventions. The focus throughout is behavioir change and delivering a person-centred and holistic service. So, helping people make long term changes. This is to battle the “so what” component of the short term, short sited approaches mentioned in the video.

    Unfortunately the vast majority of socio-political / cultural viewpoints that people hold most dear are merely those tied to their emotional biases, and hence are not subject to the strictures of logic or good-faith debate. This is partly because pundits push them on people, true, and it is partly because it is much easier to then to subject oneself to the rigors of actual dialectical self-discovery.

      True. I find this with so many issues. It’s just easier to take a hard black/white stance than doing the work to dissect an issue with all it’s complicated variables. It’s hard for me. I get exhausted sometimes. But I’m determined to rise above the simplistic all or nothing thinking I was raised with lol

Also, it's hard for a person who thinks they're right to admit they have anything in common with someone they disagree with, when in fact, it's our commonality and sympathy/empathy for each other that holds all of the solutions. I hear ya. Keep at it. You're not alone :)

    I somewhat agree with the set point theory. Those who naturally stay slim, eat to the point necessary to keep slim. Those who tend to over eat, don't have that back stop and need to mindfully watch what they eat for the rest of their lives to lose weight and keep it off.

      So really the argument should be it’s a lot harder for some people to lose and maintain weight. Not that it’s impossible.

      @@s.a.6082 absolutely not impossible - but I believe there is somewhat of a set point to which your body aspires to be. How that point is set? Don't know. Nature or nurture? Unknown. Possibly a bit of both - genetics, and lifestyle.

      @@UnCoolDad there is not a set point, there is a habit formed over growing up, people eat to feel better also and some people eat to handle stress. How people view food differs dramatically. I had a best friend at school, he was very thin and his brother was also, I noticed how they could easily go all day without putting a thing in their mouth over the weekend I stopped over, I would be starving to the point I eventually said, do you folks not eat in this house or something...

      @@James_36 I hear you - and that must be true for a lot of people, but I also believe that for many hunger is triggered by the body thinking that you are underweight, and you should be eating something to replenish your reserves. This isn't everyone mind you - just some people. In times of famine - these people would have lived as they had excess stores of fat to survive off. We no longer have famines and evolution has not caught up.

    My grandmother lost over 100 pounds in her 40’s and kept it off until her death at 93. I gained 65 pounds when I quit smoking. Lost it and 23 years later haven’t regained. Yeah, long term weight loss IMPOSSIBLE 🤡

    Umm also this person thinks that the principle of conservation of mass is false? You seem to have missed that her claims literally contradict the laws of physics.

      I didn’t miss that at all. It’s common for people to talk about people gaining weight in the long term with dieting, often because they talk about people not being able to adhere to a diet for very long e.g. someone eats nothing but lettuce for a few weeks, gets bored, goes off their diet and ends up gaining weight again. That was kind of the whole point of the video

      @Ben Carpenter Actually, she's not making a point about adherence at all. She literally says that you will regain the weight if you stick to the lettuce-only diet. Matter ex nihilo.

      @@BenCarpenter Sometimes Ben people have to be just told how incorrect their stance is. I get it, I can clearly tell you do not want to be "that guy" but sometimes it just has to happen. This woman was dangerously wrong in my view and a harsher stance is required when putting people at risk
