- It's a shame Fred Allen wasn't on the panel at this point, since it would have been nice to see him try to guess the DeMarco sisters as the mystery guests-- they were the singing group on his radio show from 1945-49.

Obscure observation: I always thought if I was in John Daly’s role I’d always forget which card they were on. I’ve often looked for a note on the back of the cards, and finally I think I’ve spotted one! At 24:09 - 24:10 “5 Down. 5 To Go” handwritten on back of card. (My life is now complete! 😂)

The DeMarco Sisters sound like those singers used in the 50s and 60s on the radio identifying the station.

At 11:58, Dorothy gasps (not her usual sounds when she suddenly comes up with an idea). 5 seconds later, Hal leans over to find out what happened. Dorothy puts her head down in some embarrassment. Arlene tells Hal, "Down Gilmore." A few seconds later, Steve chimes in, "Sounds like she forgot to wear one," implying whatever article of apparel the second challenger was involved with. Dorothy is now even more embarrassed, John laughs uproariously and the audience and other panelists join in.
Then at 12:20, Arlene calls for a conference under the guise that Dorothy had an idea, but I think it was actually done to cover some of Dorothy's embarrassment. The uncertainty of Dorothy's response indicates to me that she had no idea worth calling a conference for.
So the question is, what happened to make Dorothy gasp? If it wasn't a great idea, the only thing I can think of, especially in light of Hal and Steve's reactions and Dorothy's embarrassment was a near wardrobe malfunction. Was there ever any further discussion of this incident that would shed some light on this?
Arlene's remark to Hal also intrigued me. I had never heard that phrase used. Why Gilmore? I couldn't come up with a connection of that name to Hal. But I believe I did find the answer, under the assumption that this event led to a phrase that was in use for a few years.
From 1942-43, Howard W. Gilmore was Commander of the U.S.S. Growler, a submarine in the U.S. Navy. In action during two patrols in 1942, Gilmore was awarded the Navy Cross and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Navy Cross for sinking four enemy merchant ships, and sinking one enemy destroyer while severely damaging two others while narrowly avoiding two torpedoes.
In January-February 1943, having already done more heavy damage on enemy shipping in the area of the Solomon Islands, the Growler was preparing a surface attack on another convoy. Suddenly, an enemy escort vessel closed quickly on the sub and prepared to ram it. Evasive maneuvers were not successful and the Growler was significantly damaged. At the same time, the enemy vessel attacked the Growler, killing two men of the bridge party and wounding three others, including Gilmore. Gilmore then ordered the surviving men of the bridge party to go below deck. Waiting for his Commander to follow, the Lt. Commander suddenly heard the order: "Take her down!" Gilmore realized that he couldn't make it to the hatch in time and ordered the sub to submerge with him still on deck. He sacrificed his own life to save the lives of the rest of the crew. (The Growler was able to limp back safely to Brisbane, Australia.) His body was never recovered and he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in this incident.
The legacy of Gilmore's heroics is more than a popular phrase. "Take her down" is still one of the legendary phrases of the U.S. Submarine Force. It also inspired similar scenes in five different vehicles, in a couple of instances being mentioned directly. These vehicles are the novel "War and Remembrance" by Herman Wouk, the movie "Operation Pacific", the movie "Submarine Command", the movie "U-571" and the novel "Up Periscope" by Robb White.
Regarding Dorothy's gasp, maybe she saw a mouse or bug scoot by?
perpieta Anything's possible, but it seems unlikely that she would have been the only one to see it or react to it. Everyone else was reacting to her (and then to Hal), not to some sort of bug or rodent.
Anyway since it seems that no one connected to the show has ever written about it or talked about it when interviewed, we probably will never know the real answer. It is surprising, though, that it was not discussed further. This is the exact thing I would have wanted to know more about because it was certainly one of the more unusual and attention getting events on WML.
Lois Simmons - according to newspaper articles printed the next day, Alene's comment "down Gilmore" was in reference to the tagline used regarding an imaginary lion in an (already old by 1953) radio show called "The Gilmore Circus."
Dorothy gasped because she thought he made straight jackets, which shocked her. Listen again to the line of questioning after the gasp and it seems the most likely explanation.
Whatever she gasped at, she was certainly no stranger in her day job to things that would make others gasp.
Incidentally now I've got to that bit I find nothing remarkable about it at all. Can I have this five minutes back please? :)

It was to Boys' Town of Missouri, but yes -- I applaud Hal's suggestion there as well and was glad to see that John accepted it and gave Hal credit for a good idea! :)
The decision to start upping the prize money for charity had started a few episodes before this one, Hal Block jumped in to make it look like he was 'suggesting' it because he had already been fired from the show - might improve his image and prospects for another job. He acted like a amorous goofball but he was a very very intelligent man.

I know very little about Hal Block outside of this show, but I couldn't agree with you more. I picked up a used copy of producer Gil Fates's book on WML (which is excellent), and he corroborates this impression-- Block just didn't fit in well at all on the panel. I couldn't be a bigger fan of Fred Allen's, but if you ask me, he was far from his best on the show. The only regular 4th member of the panel who really shined was Steve Allen.

Agreed. Fred was witty, but tended to ramble on, trying to keep a bit going too ong. It didn't always work and could be annoying. Steve had a lightning fast sense of humor and didn't belabor anything.
@tinwoods Tony Randall really has nothing to do with this discussion, which isn't about the guest panelists-- it's only about the regular (appearing every week) comic panelists-- first Hal Block, then Steve Allen, then Fred Allen, and then after Fred's death the fourth slot was kept open for guests (including Tony Randall).
I guess they liked Bennett Cerf’s racist and misogynistic remarks. And his misplaced self perception of a pun wit. Hal Block was much more talented.
@@caroler01 despite the fact that Bennett was a married man he often made remarks about Arlene suggesting he was attracted to her which I believe he was. Having watched at least a few hundred episodes of WML he came off at times like he knew it all. Hal Block may have been funny but I thought he often leered at the women contestants. Once he remarked about a woman's "tomatoes". It was out of step with the polite television times.

@@kristabrewer9363, Allowing the LIVE studio audiences to see the jobs/careers of the contestants was a mistake, very unfair due to their reactions which ONLY helped the panelists. They should have only shown the people watching tv from their homes.

DeMarco's harmonize beautifully
They were a wonderful team, for some reason far less well remembered than the Andrews Sisters and the McGuires. As I noted in the video description, the DeMarcos were the regular singing team on Fred Allen's radio show for many years (1945-49). They got one of their first big breaks in show biz on Fred's program years earlier, appearing in one his weekly amateur segments.
Hal Block had some crazy eyes.
Mr. Spooner was in WWI (in the Austrian army), and emigrated to the US after that. He took observations he made in WWI into his bulletproofing endeavors, and worked with the NYPD, the NYPD's bomb squad, and also the FBI. The Times obit says he demonstrated the vests via being shot at himself, which is certainly an effective indication you trust the workmanship.
He was married (to someone named Pearl) and had three kids.
He died in 1957, at age 67, so he was 63 here, and looks a little older.

Poor Hal Block. He was actually funnier than history paints him, but his brash style of humor was so far removed from Steve Allen's erudite comedy and Arlene Francis' stylish wit that it made him appear even more crass and vulgar than he really was, especially in those less-permissive times. You can see John Daly and even the usually serene Ms. Francis getting impatient and upset with him.
I always found Hal to be cheeky but understand that at this time his humour would be considered going beyond the pail. Though when he introduced John he very quite gracious yet, John never really gave it much notice of a response other than to smile or give a little laugh. I
have to admit in later shows Bennet seemed to give quite a few comments that rivalled Hal’s, but due to his urbane delivery he got away with them.

Solong Hal Block! We will miss you on the show. The show's advertiser, Stoppette deodorant, wasn't particularly thrilled when Hal said you could turn your "armpit into a charmpit." I think it's hilarious, but it was considered a tasteless remark back in the day. Hal also made many double entendre references to women on the show which concerned many conservative viewers. This episode was his final appearance on What's My Line.
I agree -- I may be in the minority, but I've warmed to Hal's humor.

Mr. Hartnett was a pioneer in weather forecasting for utilities, which I imagine is fairly important if you want to predict where you'll have to rush repairs to. The rainmaking was kind of a sidelight.
He was a big ol' outdoorsman in his private life, and supported various Catholic charities. He and his wife Kathleen had five kids together.

The passage of time: The DeMarco sisters were born between 1923-1933 and so were between the ages of 20-30, in 1953, (which is the year of my birth) and look much younger. In 2016, only one is still alive, (Jeanette) and she's 91.
My observation when growing up in the fifties was that generally speaking compared to today, people matured slower until sometime in the early 20's and then aged faster once they reached mid-30's.

I agree that Hal Block didn't fit with the rest of the panel. I do agree that Steve Allen was a better fit than Fred Allen, but I think that Martin Gabel was the best fit with the other 3.
Actually, I think that Bennett Cerf was a better fit than Martin Gabel. Based on my viewings of the shows so far, I found that Martin Gabel was inoffensive, but colorless, whereas Cerf had a kind of nerdy charm (if that's not a contradiction in terms).
You need someone that is more down to earth. Not rich or snobby.

For a man who recently got fired, Hal Block seems to keep up appearances in a jolly mood (The Show must go on). But he doesn't call John "my favorite newscommentator" any longer.

I can understand the confusion, but the Boys and Girls Town of Missouri is a separate organization from the more famous one in Nebraska. At the time of this video they did not accept girls, so it was called Boys Town of Missouri. Living in MO currently, so I can tell you they still do outstanding work in the community.

Wow! When they said Rainmaker, I thought of the current usage of rainmaker... someone who brings in business (magically like a shaman!). So when they went along that line of questioning I was concerned he was leading the panel astray! Who knew it was literally someone who made rain! LOVE THIS SHOW!

How come on the last contestant, the heating pad lady... why is John Daly answering all the questions for her? He does do that sometimes, but with this person, he's doing just about all of it..
PepsiMama2 Probably to speed things up. Sometimes the contestants take time to think over answers, and they never had a lot of time for the final contestant if they squeezed one in after the mystery guest. That's my guess.
What happened to wholesome society like this?
It's a TV show, it does not reflect society as it was, actual society was no more wholesome then than now, nothing is as convenient if you want to suffer 'modern society' as rose colored glasses.

John Daly's facial expression at 21:38 shows how worried he is about another crass line of questions from Hal Block. Fortunately Hal goes back to legitimate inquiry soon here. But as funny as he could be at his best, I'm looking forward to the post-Hal era as I watch these in order...too often his crude behavior gets out of control and spoils the positive impressions left by his quick wit.
+Neil Midkiff Very succinctly put. I couldn't agree more, and the 21:38 facial expression was, indeed, all-telling that Daly was at the end of his patience with Block.
True but having watched in sequence to this point I would have to say that Daly himself was quite rude with regard to sexual innuendo on a number of occasions. One instance was when Miss America was the mystery guest. He, a married man, was pretty flirty with any number of attractive young guests. And Daly plus the panel were rude when the overweight owner of the "Reducing Farm" was on the prior show.
There seemed to be a running joke that Block would hit on any woman, Daly and the panelists would make a comment to that end before Block even spoke. Daly seemed to delight in demeaning Block. My guess is there was a lot of 'behind the scenes' animosity.
in this particular case, it seems to me that john’s expression was a combination of a lack of amusement at hal’s flirtation, and worry over the short time left in the program. though i think you may find many other instances where there is indeed a look of true dread on mr. daly’s face!
Yes, I noticed Daly's expression as well. It was unmistakable. I think that, by this time, Block had already been fired, and this was one of his last weeks on the show. Although Block could be funny at times, many times his jokes were tasteless and downright cringe-making. His behavior during this segment of the show is a case in point.
gcjerryusc, I thought the same thing but then I've also read that Daly had a quick temper, which doesn't fit in with the personality we see on WML. I don't recall where the article appeared but I recall reading that he himself admitted that when he was angry he "blew up". Rather surprising to read since he does seem quite easy going.

adventurous people to LSD, and Steve Allen was one of these.
Bloch: "You had to be married." He may have already been fired, but it's like he can't help himself. He's trying hard to be funny, and it's coming out wrong. Steve Allen has the quips too, but he knows what the punchline should be. You can see the difference in talent. I don't mean to imply Block deserves scorn forever, but his type of humor is not appropriate for this show.

There's only one episode of the radio series in public circulation; the Library of Congress has at least two more that are unlikely to ever be released. The panelists were the same as on the TV show, except when there were guests filling in for absent regulars. The early 50's versions sucked because they spent too much time having the guest walking back and forth in front of panel checking their hands and garments and then they had to rush each one , throw over the cards and rush for the mystery guests. The newer concept was better as they left show, just pass by and greet panel!
They really should have admonished the audience with their Neverending giveaways with the clapping during a conference.

Unless you were LGBTQ+ or pretty much any non-white race. Or a woman -- by default women had to be OK with a culture where the wolf whistles and appreciative comments we see on this show were standard male-female interactions.
I love the 1950s, it's my favorite era for dress and style for both men and women, and I'm loving watching this whole series in order. (I think I told a friend that it's "adorably sexist.") But it wasn't better for EVERYONE. It was better for a select group of well-off straight white people, and it's fun to romanticize the nostalgia.
My country hasn't been bombed by warplanes after 1965. That's an improvement for us over here.
Also I'd be lost without popular music post-1965.

The guy who "needs" the vest just got fired from the show because people didn't like him. I am sure no one wanted to actually kill him, but let's say some people wouldn't miss him.

That's Sally De Marco, not one of the DeMarco Sisters. And "The Lady in Red" is the name of the song, not a film, from the 1935 film "In Caliente".

I googled DeMarco sisters, not much on them, what was their story and history? They don't even have a wikipedia article, and their official page looks like it was made in 1996.
Mike Carter All I really know about them is that they were the singing group n Fred Allen's radio show from 1945-49, but they had actually performed on his show many years earlier. I can't remember if they were contestants in the weekly amateur contest or if they were one-time substitutes for the usual group at the time, the Merry Macs. They had a very tight, swing-oriented sound, taking many somewhat extreme liberties with melodies and rhythm that you didn't hear all that much from vocalists on high profile radio shows of the time. The Andrews Sisters, e.g., were a lot less adventuresome and more commercial-sounding from a pure jazz perspective, in my opinion.
What's My Line?
They had a truly unique harmony and vocalizing style, when you heard their work there was no mistaking them for any other female vocal group. I'm now racking my brain to recall 2 other very successful pop records they did besides "Teach Me Tonight".

Nowadays people tend to say "Missouri". My grandfather would say "Missoura".

Hal said is it to do with Rain & yet Daly didn't give it to him & then Arlene Francis says Rain Maker & She's Right! Just shows how against Hal Daly was. Wonder why they ever chose him for the Show when they had such a dislike for him.
We don't know WHO chose Hal for the panel. Maybe his uncle? They everywhere. But he was dislike by the WML and me.

Arlene was married to her second husband Martin Gabel since 1946 till 1986.
Sinatra dated one of them, but she was too shy to kiss him, she was 18. He sent her a gift basket later, the note said;'' Stay as innocent as long as you can.'' I'm paraphrasing.
Mr. Block was bad to the last drop, “So where are the De Marco Sisters?” As with most long running series one follows, the characters become a bit like part of your family. Hal would be the weird uncle nobody misses much after he’s gone.
What rubbish. The panel was highbrow, and Hal Block was not, he just didn't fit in.
I hated it when Dorothy gasps.
Once again John is uncharacteristically sloppy in summarizing the rules; at 3:45 he says to the first contestant "every time you can dredge a No answer out of them" and at 21:18 "every No answer you get from the panel"; both are backward, as the contestant is the one to give Yes and No answers. I'll be glad later when the rules are assumed to be understood, rather than taking time from the actual game play to go over them in each round.
They falsely answered the question, "Are there two of you?" Last time I checked five does not equal two, so the answer should have been "no."
Sorry-- what does "love does not equal two" mean? I don't understand.
funkeekatt No prob. :) But the reason this got a "yes" is that there ARE two of anything in a group of five of anything. If the question asked was "Are there EXACTLY two of you," then a "no" would have been correct.
It's ridiculously technical logic, to be sure, but technically correct! John did always try to mislead the panel as much as possible without outright lying.
Obviously Dorothy understood what they meant when they answered "two" as she then followed with the question "are there more than two of you".
It also helped that one of the sisters first answered "no" and then John conferred with them to change the answer to "yes".
There are not "only" two of them, but yes there are 2 among the 5.
It’s bad enough that Missourians can’t pronounce Missouri but it’s even worse that they can’t pronounce Louis. They should have called it St. Lewis if they wanted to pronounce it that way.

I adored this show in its day, but I believe the earlier shows were rigged. The panel guessed with little to no hints and typically before the person could even win $25-30. And John allowed excessive yes answers to what should have been, No. The show was getting low ratings and things changed fast.
John later pushed for, No answers, the panel wasn’t able to guess very easy and people won most of the time or if they didn’t, John would flip all of the cards over.
Their ratings went up and the show became a hit!

Yes I think it was rigged. That question about "rain" really came out of nowhere (first contestant).
WHAT, in God's sake does seeing the Label of a Man's Suit got to do with anything pertaining to the Line of the Contestant....having watch this show from the 1950's onward....Never, Never understood Dorothy's nearly psychotic insistence on seeing them. In the woman's fashion; especially the Men....Dorothy, What gives? No, no coy response is acceptable....it is either a 'search' for snobbery or a 'peculiar' addiction. LOL....
I cannot speak for Dorothy, but I have no problem with her gathering whatever information is allowed. A prior contestant was identified as from New York, (he grew up in New York, so panelists assumed he worked in New York), but his work/line was a roulette operator in Vegas - I have no idea where his clothes label was from. The clothes label also might give an idea of income/social class - a blue collar person would tend not to have an expensive clothes label, or an expensive label might tend to exclude lower-income occupations. She also likes to took at peoples hands - callouses or discoloration, for instance, might hint at some jobs, or exclude other jobs. Dorothy never indicated the labels or hands helped her...unlike a lot of people, some are smart enough to never explain why they lost or why they won.
To me Hal Block was an annoying person and took away from the quality of the show. He was a ringleader of toxic masculinity.
And constantly scratched his head.

Well, the party ,after WML shaw was quite late at night in the lobby of hotels. Contestants also participated.
Im pleased they got rid of Block. He’s more foolish than he looks. Hahahahaha
