How to Make Cheap Pump Sack For Inflatable Mat Like Therma-a-rest NeoAir Xlite For Almost Nothing

  • In this video I use dry bag and bottle cap to make inexpensive pump sack for inflating my Thermarest NeoAir Xlite. I also make a small cap that converts it into a camp shower.
Tired and dizzy from blowing up your #NeoAir mat every night? Getting mold from your breath growing on the inside of the mat? Maybe you need a pump sack. #Therm-a-rest and few other companies make them but they are either pricey (~40$) or battery operated which adds weight to your kit. They are also not much more than a dry bag with a valve. I use one of my old dry bags and plastic bottle neck with cap to make both air pump and a camp shower. When not used as a pump the bag can still be used to haul your stuff.
The mat is Therm-a-rest NeoAir Xlite regular size
The YELLOW bag is 8L dry bag. - 13-15 repetitions
The RED bag is ~35L backpack insert - 4-6 repetitions

You can also do this with a compactor trash bag, if you don't want to use a drybag. They are tough and hold up quite well. But a large compactor bag can be a little unwieldy to wrestle with when compressing it to fill the sleeping pad, compared to a smaller drybag.

yes, absolutely, and basically free. I did this one because I already bring dry bag and store things in transit

I subbed, based on this mod alone. I like the shower option, being a stinky field biologist- semi -retired kayak camping guide ;) Edit: the MEC logo tells me we are sympatico.

Id like to have a check valve do I dont jave to care abut the backflow then pressure builds up. Its simple to make.
A bearing ball and aquarium hose (2 dimensions where the smaller outer diameter is the same as the larger inner diameter) and glue the tubes together with the bearing ball inside the bigger tube. Backflow will make the bearing ball seal against the the smaller tube. There are variants on this , still all are the same

@@markomm5571 Oo Cool! i have a rain jacket, which hood i really hate and i emailed the manufacturer about it, they said it's "impossible to modify", bc it's welded etc. i'm excited to see how you modifiy your fancy pieces !!

@@victoriage like I said not a huge thing but I absolutely hate to my bone the fact that both arcteryx and fjallraven pants have no back pockets. I am basically buying pants at thrift store and replace those pockets onto my pants lol
