Our local DS association in the Stuttgart area of SW Germany regularly visits hospitals with maternity units with materials to educate staff how to deliver a postnatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome. That is so, so important! In my own case, I recognised my son had DS as soon as I saw him, and the gynaecologist was very gentle. No complaints there! My son had to stay in NICU for weeks and when the genetic test results came in, a lady paediatrician talked privately to my husband and me and said it was impossible to give a prognosis as to how our son would develop because there is such variability among people who live with DS. I found that far more helpful than either a pessimistic or an overly optimistic prognosis would have been.
