      I use Amazon and Target for some releases and occasionally Walmart but get most of my physical media from Best Buy for specific reasons so very unhappy about this(the online aspect really) since this is going ot create a hardship for me and in the long run will cost me more.

    I actually disagree with the conclusions here - physical media isn't dead, it's just becoming niche. It's important to remember that the retail sector itself has been in decline, so these big-box stores need to reorient to survive. Best Buy has reoriented toward appliances, TVs and big-ticket items. There will always be a physical media market for hardcore movie fans, collectors and home theater enthusiasts (we're seeing this now with physical media for music). The selection and quality of 4K Blu-ray has been improving every year with 2023 being an incredible year for must-have releases. Also consider that the "sugar rush" era of streaming might be over with higher prices, ads, and stingy content availability. The fallout from 2023 SAG and WGA strikes (including new residual payouts) will likely alter streaming's financial profile for studios, who may impose further changes to streaming's business structure that could negatively affect the consumer experience. I wouldn't be surprised if physical media sales stabilize or rebound a bit over the next five years.

      Thank u finally someone got it right physical media will always be around not a lot of people have new cars and old cars still carry CDs players to buy them. New music is always produced on cd 💿 and we still have music stores around the world 🌎 like in Hollywood aomeba records

    You raised the question of should Physical Media go away. The answer is no. There should be an outlet for physical media to exist. The fact that stores like Best Buy are ceasing sales of physical media in early 2024 will affect their long term business sales and profits.

      @jonfreeman9682 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Physical forever! There are still boutique labels cranking out bluray and 4k’s. There just moving to online sales with those boutique labels that the major studios license out to, to be able to release physical versions. Criterion, kino lorber, shout!, vinegar syndrome, 2nd site, and a few more out there. Plenty of physical media is still available for sure. I buy from those sites. As soon as target and Best Buy started ramping down the shelves with physical media. I find myself walking less and less into those stores.

    Physical media for film won't ever fully die. Even in 2023 you can't duplicate the audio quality produced on a 4k disc digitally due to compression. There are so many boutique companies out there making awesome 4k releases that sell like crazy too. The market is there and people gladly pay high dollar for it. This move by Best Buy definitely is a big hit to the market though.

    Best Buy no longer selling physical media will simply mean increased sales elsewhere. Either boutique labels will publish more mainstream titles from studios who don't sell directly to the public, or those studios will provide a way for consumers to begin buying directly from them.
    Ultimately the death of physical media depends entirely on whether or not consumers buy it, not who sells it.

      @@alwaysemployed656 Eh, they are basically saying that the end of physical media is near completely, hence the "nail in the coffin" comment they made. The issue isn't which stores are housing physical media going forward, it's the fact that since Best Buy is no longer going to be selling them, it seems to trigger "the end" of physical media as a whole! I'm saying that's not the case. Us collectors still have options as it's just shifting and we just have to adjust. The panel are clearly not collectors.

    Your source that Best Buy was the largest retailer for physical media was WRONG. Best Buy only sold 4 percent of the total discs sold. Walmart is clearly No. 1 with over 40 percent, Amazon at No. 2 with 18 percent, Target is No. 3 with 6 percent and Best Buy is No. 4. If you're going to report something you should have two sources to confirm any information you are going to tell your followers.

    If you are trying to say pretty much all physical media will no longer be available I think you are wrong. If you are saying the main stream market will go i.e. standard catalogue and chart titles you are probably correct. I can't see the boutiques going anywhere any time soon. In fact they will probably (and I'm guessing this bit) license more main stream releases as special editions

    I wouldn’t exactly use Best Buy as a reliable barometer for the state of physical media. Best Buy has been shifting towards being more of a household appliance store over a media electronic store for years now.
    Physical media will soon be mainly an online and specialty store based industry and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s also worth noting that new 4K disc titles have seen a huge increase. That wouldn’t be happening if they believed the medium was dead.

    Ok, Good luck finding media on streaming because media on streaming is less likely to stay and more likely to be deleted. Don't think that the new movies and new shows and new specials are not going to be deleted too. All media new and old are more likely, no matter what it is, to be deleted and more likely to be hacked by threats.

    Physical media is far from dying. On the contrary, we are in a bit of a golden age. It's just changing from where it's available from. The amount of stuff that's is coming out is tremendous and amazing. That's the reality.
    Relying on streaming while living in Europe, especially here in Scandinavia, is a recipe for disaster. On top of that, we only have 1/10 of the library on iTunes compared to what you have in the US. Streaming and digital content can never completely take over until EVERYTHING is available for EVERYONE all around the globe. We can't have a situation where titles are locked on a digital platform depending on where you're living.
