The music and sounds on these youtube uploads of games just completely take me back to being in an arcade in the late 80s. Well done to everyone on here who goes to the trouble of bringing our childhood memories back!
Love the scream of the male bad guys when they go down! Sounds like they're saying, "Oh, GAAAAWD!" One of those little details that makes the arcade versions of these games so desirable...
+TONYskittlezzz ya I was once watching that movie and I was shocked that these voices are similar to the golden axe... when some1 dies in that film... strange
I spent a bit of my youth in Arcades in the 90's - This era was the pinnacle of arcade games; Street Fighter, Outrun, Golden Axe, Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Daytona USA (4 Player) and so many more. I have a lot of fond memories hanging out in arcades and playing games with my childhood friends.
I used to love playing this game. It was surprisingly intense, considering the inherent cheese of these types of adventures. The opening where you can choose from the three as they're sitting on a skeleton's hand was very chilling. I always played the Amazon woman.
this was my favorite game as a kid. the only game that i actually finished in the arcade. i beat it probably 3 times. always loved how they used some sound samples from "conan the barbarian."
I remember playing this at an independent grocery store in this small central California town I use to live in when I was a little kid. It was so awesome by comparison to the Sega Genesis version.
Loved playing, and eventually defeating, this game in the arcade back in the 80's. A bunch of kids gathered around as I reached the end for the final battle...the end clip was pretty cool.
I love that the big guys with hammers die like the guy in Conan the Barbarian. The guy that got hit with the trap. Plus the male villagers being stomped on are sounds from the guy that fell out of the helicopter in Rambo First Blood.
I had this arcade game... I always wondered why ax battler had an axe on the marquee but played with a sword in the game. The game finally bit the dust but had to keep the marquee.
well, if you really miss it, you can download this game on xbox LIVE marketplace (xbox 360 required) they have all kinds of old games, like Doom, wolfenstein 3D, duke nukem 3D, doom 2 is on its way, they even have games for the sega like paperboy and golden axe
@ojideagu Heh you are like the only person I've heard besides myself who gets ticked from two or three notes wrong in a conversion! BTW I love the sound effects in the arcade (yeah you are also the only person I've heard who "got" the First Blood connections too), and the fact that the soldiers are beating the villagers until you get to em, in the arcade. BTW what did you guys call the jump-down-thrust attack? We always called it the "scoop" hahaha.
i didnt realize just how MUCH i missed this game until i watched this!! its almost worth dealing with the old school graphics...this was my favorite when i was little and i played it OUT when i got it with the sonic 8 pack cartridge.
lol, that's funny how they animated the bad guys beating up on peasants and such... it was just kind of creative in the game and the animations looked funny
I remember thinking this game was amazing because the corpses stayed on the screen for the duration of the level. They didn't blink out. I LOVED THIS GAME!!!!
@rasklbc Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and eh, I'm guessing a fourth one was to do with racing. They're all on sale on "Steam" until the 27th. You should check it out. Like 60 cents a pop.
Well, I grew up with the Mega Drive/Genesis version (not having been born around the time this was in the arcades)and think it's awesome. It certainly isn't a perfect "copy" of the arcade game (I seem to remember thinking the thieves looked like squirrels) but the differences really are just superficial. Plus; the mega Drive version had Duel mode, which has to count for something, right?
@wuzzi123 This is the arcade version, not the Mega Drive / Genesis version. The arcade machines of the day had a bit more muscle than the home consoles.
I remember long ago i played a black and white version on a really old black computer, which was weird as it had also had a phone attached to it for some reason.
@pguest1080 Why are you complaining? She has the best magic. All the playthroughs I've seen have been with Tyris (Best magic) or Gilius (best melee fighter) used.
When I was like 4 or 5, my dad uninstalled and threw away this game cuz he was sure that "such a violent game" would make me a bully and/or a murderer... yeah, I still remember. Thats how much it hurt.
@xOmniCloudx I honestly think the Genesis version had better graphics and music 2. I will admit some of the levels look a little better on the arcade though. I used to play this game a lot in the arcades and on my Genesis and I found the Genesis version 2 also load and play way smoother than the arcade. Now why wasn't Revenge of Death Adder never ported. Golden Axe 2 and 3 were good but RODA was awesome!
cool game! music just rocks! giulius thunderhead was my favorite. i actually don't understand why does the monster run away when you clear the stage, he is obviously afraid of that little midget.
What was the name of the game where you played a sword singing barbarian and killed lizards? And then if you jumped down the hole. You could get a flame sword. It was a side scrolling game released in the arcades back in the 80s.
This game is the shit and so are all the other conversions out there (especially the Sega conversions etc) but it's the Beats Of Rage Engine Golden Axe mods that really opened my eyes to how great the vintage Golden Axe games are because they purely expand and enhance the old games like this (forget the newer versions of the Golden Axe franchise), this is where it's at...If only I could get a working copy of Golden Axe Myth though.
was this game made afther or before Rambo because the movie uses the same audio for one of the guys dying just like in the game at 2:19 to 2:21... its the scene in the movie where the guy falls off that big mountain as he's falling check it out...
see at 4.22 if you slide to then, you will here a sound sample which is taken from the first rambo film in the forest when stallone takes down the guy and breaks his legs, listen to the scream its the exact same!! no kidding, leave a comment when you hear, thanks.
@Palmerholic Part of the reason it took so long is because I just discovered MAME32 about two years ago. The only chance I had to play this was when I was at the Arcade. Looking back, this game isn't really that hard at all, try beating Rastan.
Doesn anyone know if there is a mame for what i guess is an original arcade version? It entirely different characters, there was a centaur lady, some kind of farmer fighter (he had magic that would grow a tree with apples that everyone could eat for life) and a dwarf riding on the shoulders of a big guy (master blaster style) and had an axe, the ending was after beating adder, adder attacks you on the elevator down, and the master jumps of the big guy onto adder with the axe and they both fall
same ere, best magic, a fully charged dragon can almost wipe out the heavy armour sword guys with 1 hit. Get a blue dragon and nail death adder when its adder 2 heavy armour guys and a skeleton on screen with the magic then about 5 blasts of the dragon on death adder = win
Story of this game and my life. My father comes home with a sega when I was 5. I played Sonic, Astrix but when I played this game... IT WAS F*CKING AMAZING!!!!!!
The music and sounds on these youtube uploads of games just completely take me back to being in an arcade in the late 80s. Well done to everyone on here who goes to the trouble of bringing our childhood memories back!

ahh man this was my favorite arcade game when I was like 8! the sound effects are classic! I used to use the girl too she kicks ass!
And she was hot
Jesus seems like yesterday I was playing this at the arcade..makes u think how life flies!! Great game classic!
I loved this game back when I was a kid. Fun as hell. Played it all the time.
I used to love playing this game. It was surprisingly intense, considering the inherent cheese of these types of adventures. The opening where you can choose from the three as they're sitting on a skeleton's hand was very chilling.
I always played the Amazon woman.

OMFG I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS GAME, I played it as a kid and i loved it and I couldnt remember the name of it. Now we are reunited and it feels so good.
Loved playing, and eventually defeating, this game in the arcade back in the 80's. A bunch of kids gathered around as I reached the end for the final battle...the end clip was pretty cool.
yes the bad guys get out of the arcade I remember the ending of the game.
80s will never be bested, ever!
Jay Khwaja so true!! You can’t top the AIDS virus!!
played it on Pc and Sega , used to have some ragged ol computers in our classroom and we'd be playing this during class...fantastic!!
This is one of, if not the first video game I ever played. before this i'd always just watch.
I love that the big guys with hammers die like the guy in Conan the Barbarian. The guy that got hit with the trap. Plus the male villagers being stomped on are sounds from the guy that fell out of the helicopter in Rambo First Blood.
Man this brings back memories, many hours spent playing this at WIZARDS in Whangamata, New Zealand
Tyris=Flare's strongest magic potion attack is still cool even today; she summons a gigantic dragon to saturate the screen with fiery death.
This game is great in 2 players
This game was so much fun when I played it on the Genesis bakc in the day. One of the games I could actually beat at the time!
I played the crap out of this game on arcade back in the day. Instant classic.
I have this game and it is still fun. One of a couple games that you have a ending. Also need to be careful about friendly attacks
this game was so awesome! they had it on an arcade machine that was at shop in the wee town where I grew up - nice memories! :)
Me.
My quarters were stolen in my childhood by DEATH ADDER
You mean Death=Adder, surely. (In the Golden Axe realm, everyone puts an "equals" sign in their name. )
I had this arcade game... I always wondered why ax battler had an axe on the marquee but played with a sword in the game. The game finally bit the dust but had to keep the marquee.
Tyris was my FAV character to play with!
mine was the Dwarf Viking
well, if you really miss it, you can download this game on xbox LIVE marketplace (xbox 360 required) they have all kinds of old games, like Doom, wolfenstein 3D, duke nukem 3D, doom 2 is on its way, they even have games for the sega like paperboy and golden axe

so many feels! this game was so hard to beat when I was younger
One of my earliest gaming memories. Just got it on psn for novelty value really but still it was crazy short
i didnt realize just how MUCH i missed this game until i watched this!! its almost worth dealing with the old school graphics...this was my favorite when i was little and i played it OUT when i got it with the sonic 8 pack cartridge.
lol, that's funny how they animated the bad guys beating up on peasants and such... it was just kind of creative in the game and the animations looked funny
Tanto tiempo y queria volver a ver este juego que tanto me gustaba jugar en las arcadias de las ferias.
That's so cool! It might be that they're stock sound effects both used in the movie and the game.
I never thought of using magic that way. Nice play throught:)
I love Golden Axe, but Tyris does have the best magic of all 3 of them!
what the original arcade version of Golden Axe had, that no others had, was some in-game action sequences.
i was looking for this game 15 years ty
this game is so amazing. I still love it.
Hey the Mega Drive port ain't that bad either.
I still love this game and the music is damn awesome.
This game scared me for some reason as a kid but I loved it.
Played this as a teenage.. now playing it with my kids on a MAME emulator :)
Thanks for rekindling the memories. It's been almost twenty years since I've seen this. I wonder what happened to my old Sega unit?
Had to love the 80s Arcade message about the drugs.
That suicide dragon at 6:30 made me laugh a lot!
damn that brought back some memories from when i was a kid
I still play this game on my old SEGA machine, it is sooo fun :)
This game was the shit back when I was younger.
Well, I grew up with the Mega Drive/Genesis version (not having been born around the time this was in the arcades)and think it's awesome. Oh how I used to love this game, and hate it too when I died quickly and I had no more coins for the machine.
David Caruso as Mitch in First Blood. Check out: Rambo: First Blood - Forest Hunt. 34 sec in. It will blow your mind.
i remember playing this for hours when i was young i had it for my sega in the six pack game. that also had Streets of Rage and the ninja game.
@wuzzi123 This is the arcade version, not the Mega Drive / Genesis version. The arcade machines of the day had a bit more muscle than the home consoles.
5:16 whaat was that!? Had no idea. .. Very nice
!!! i've been trying to remember the name of this game for the longest time. THANKS!
When i played this game this characters magic was a dragon from the sky, also dragons used to run away after someone hit you of them.
Used to finish it without getting hit even once.. oh the memories
Watching this causes 80's flashbacks.
You, know, the slower tempo of the boss music in the Genesis version actually sounds better than the arcade's, at least to me.
always love playing this game after school
When I was like 4 or 5, my dad uninstalled and threw away this game cuz he was sure that "such a violent game" would make me a bully and/or a murderer... yeah, I still remember. Thats how much it hurt.

omg so nostalgic...i remember this game as a kid watching my parents play!
cool game! music just rocks!
giulius thunderhead was my favorite.
i actually don't understand why does the monster run away when you clear the stage, he is obviously afraid of that little midget.

This game reminds me of Capcoms Dungeons & Dragons arcade game. Kind of like a video game based off Conan the Barbarian
That death cry and a few others were sampled from the movie "Rambo" FYI.
thankyou for this upload, the music is sooo good :)
Actually, the death screams are from various movies, such as Conan the Barbarian and Rambo.
this game, double dragon, and gauntlet are the best.... and ninja gaiden too
Nostalgia can make a grown man cry
the way u got the 1st Dragon is pretty good...
Nice Game play.
was this game made afther or before Rambo because the movie uses the same audio for one of the guys dying just like in the game at 2:19 to 2:21...
its the scene in the movie where the guy falls off that big mountain as he's falling check it out...
You know half the sound effects are from First Blood, right? :) I think that's actually David Caruso when he gets his leg impaled or something.
The enemies seem to be easier to kill in the arcade for some reason than on the Genesis.
U should have chosen the dwarf. I love his thunder magic.
see at 4.22 if you slide to then, you will here a sound sample which is taken from the first rambo film in the forest when stallone takes down the guy and breaks his legs, listen to the scream its the exact same!! no kidding, leave a comment when you hear, thanks.
Hellz Yeah, Thorgrim. This game rules.
como olvidar este juego de mi niñez en los 90 hasta no iba a comer por jugar...
Awesome game and great gameplay ^^
the scream of the enemies are real screaming noises from prisioners condemned to death penalty backin the 80's
I spent a shit load of money in the arcades on this game when I was a kid.
all voices in this game where done by people on death row. strange right
That's a great lie. Rambo First Blood, Commando and Conan the Barbarian film samples were used. check out Wikipedia.
@Palmerholic Part of the reason it took so long is because I just discovered MAME32 about two years ago. The only chance I had to play this was when I was at the Arcade. Looking back, this game isn't really that hard at all, try beating Rastan.
@pguest1080
She has the strongest magic - only need to use at Death adder, so may aswell..
Always used to think they were holding blackberries on sticks!
I remember skipping school to play this.
El golden axe viejo, el golden axe no murio, NO MURIO !
At 25 I finally beat this game. A rather lackluster ending but an overall good game. Great for re-play value. Same with Altered Beast!
Doesn anyone know if there is a mame for what i guess is an original arcade version? It entirely different characters, there was a centaur lady, some kind of farmer fighter (he had magic that would grow a tree with apples that everyone could eat for life) and a dwarf riding on the shoulders of a big guy (master blaster style) and had an axe, the ending was after beating adder, adder attacks you on the elevator down, and the master jumps of the big guy onto adder with the axe and they both fall

ooo long time not see this game
i love it!!!
Story of this game and my life.
My father comes home with a sega when I was 5. I played Sonic, Astrix but when I played this game... IT WAS F*CKING AMAZING!!!!!!
Мы так же играли в эту игру, она нам очень пришлась по душе.
i still remember what the sounds for the combo's were... "wakkoo wakkoo puh"... "gwahhhh!"
