jane’s changed my life. i met casey niccoli in ventura about 20 years ago. man, i had to collect myself. told her what an important part of my life this music was, how they blew my little mind wide open. she was ultimately cool. gave me a necklace & we talked about the new album.
lol....ikr? But then add to that all the tension between those four personalities. And the fact they were all doing lots of drugs....with Perry and Dave doing a gargantuan amount of hard drugs. Honestly, I bet it was an intense creative fun time.....but so intense that there's no way it could sustain like that forever. I highly recommend reading the book Whores. It's a first-hand account of the band compiled from nothing but direct quotes of all who were involved in the orbit of the band. Super interesting and fun read!
I first heard Janes Addiction in 2004 when I was 14. True Nature was the opening track for MLB 2005. From there I discovered Nothing's Shocking, Ritual De Lo Habitual, and Strays. Without question, if they never broke up, they would've been bigger than RHCP, no question.
He kinda does sound on the verge of tears...especially at the end. Then again, heavy opiate use often can make your voice sound like that....tense, constricted, reedy.
@@avedic Not really, in fact is the oposite: relaxed, uncensored. So evidently he's speaking from his mind and soul about the most important issue that came with his success. And he work it out, Lollapalooza is still alive, just like Jane's.

Perry was a mad artist, a true genius....you can really see the struggle he was having with his desire for art vs the demands of commercial music....im sad to say he lost this battle and in his own words he lost his creativity. A few years later you see a shift in his personality to who he is today....just watch any interviews he did in 92 onwards.....20 yrs on i had forgotten this interview and had formed the view, like many others that see all the rubbish he does now, that he was always a tool but that isnt true....at the time of early JA he was a music god...such a sad interview in retrospect, like watching the death of one of the worlds greatest artists
DAMN, that's so beautiful. I love him and his music so much! It really reminds me of interviews I've seen w/ Kurt Cobain talking about how stifling the "industry" is, and how much it drags them down & causes their creativity (music) to suffer. Makes me sad that such unique artistic expression was stampeded by rich old fat bastards in suits looking for the next goldmine-in-the-flesh to suck dry! I know a lot of musicians that expect to go triple platinum in their first week bitch about copyright infringement now, but the true artists (Nirvana, Janes Addiction, Tool, Pearl Jam) of that day would probably have welcomed this internet revolution (as PJ does) where we can hear music that's GOOD and spread it along- free of charge- to people who appreciate it and bypass the record company bigwigs. I'm glad I was young enough to have my parents spend $12.99 on a CD w/ 1 catchy tune written by one person, recorded by two other people, and lip syched by two other good looking people (Milli Vanilli) for Christmas instead of being old enough at the time of the CD "revolution" to work my ass off and spend my hard earned money donating 98% of sales to record labels, managers, lawyers, and publicists when the musicians were making pennies per CD sale... Now I buy albums on Amazon for $1.99. Lets love & appreciate music, pass it on, get inspired, write our own, and cut out the middle man! Rock on!!!
2:30 I know that feeling, it’s absolutely horrible. To go from being able to do so much in a short amount of time to being unable to do anything at all feels like a tumor weighing you down.
I don’t give a fu@$ what you are on Perry great interview and speaks his mind . The Perry I see now looks different but I still love you man and still has the same passion and beliefs
It's kind of sad to watch this because it's been pretty spelled out in interviews that everything on Nothing and Ritual was written by 1987 or 1988, so it's actually pretty accurate that nothing new was ever written after that. Another legendary band that fell to the pressures of success. Wish that could have been different, especially for this band.
Remember the rock shirt circulating in the 80s that said “we came, we saw, we kicked ass“? Nothing left to say. It’s almost the way it’s supposed to happen and I’m so glad I was there when it did.
They fell, just like others did, as a result of the corruption, hungry mawing, grasping, thieving bastard record industry. I almost held hope at the turn of the century that this monster was finally going to fall as a result of the Internet. But like anyone that has power, money, and a hunger to maintain while grasping for more and more, they will fight to the bitter end. And they will grasp for even more if they have opportunity. Frankly, if the big recording mega-multinational record industry corporations were to fall, I would fart in the general direction-a kiss goodbye from my asshole. They've sucked the life out of so many artists and left them to rot when they were nothing but husks. Yet, we keep on giving them our money over and over and over.
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 that's maybe true. Jane's really disintegrated after this album and heroin is the likely culprit despite what he says. Like my other sad sack post herein, I understand that avenue. Most of my life it's been on and off, one thing or another. After my best friend died at 18 I fell in with a different group of people and I've essentially been trying to kill my self ever since, basically. In 1994 no one was suggesting therapy in the small northern town I came from. Wasn't even a consideration. Eh, ancient history now.
Please refrain from putting Iggy Pop next to anyone....Iggy is the one and only, all else followed like starving lil bitches trying to live up to legend!

That's a living man, not a talking idiot. It's been more than 20 years Lollapalooza. Great that Navarro, Perkings and Farell didn't just cry because cruel life and miserable fame, they just lift their own weight, share their goods, overcome weakness, didn't play the victim role and didn't kill themselves like many rock stars from 90's, you know, those playing the "rebeld, difficult child" role. At the end I look them as really healthy guys,

"senores y senoras, nosotros tenemos mas influencia con sus hijos que tu tiene. peros los queremos. creado y regalo de los angeles, juana's addiccion."
“I could give a shit about the stack of green” Lie. The band almost broke up in 87/88 because he wanted a HUGE percentage of credit to get even more money than the rest of the band.
Perry says he doesn’t care about stacks of greens but if true he wouldn’t have pressured the band to take less than They deserved and for him to take 50% of publishing, leaving the other 3 to split the remaining 50%. Eric was super pissed that’s the beginning of the end.. then when Eric swooped Perry’s chick.. well that was the end... janes ain’t janes without Eric.
50%? Only 50%? Lol Perry took 67% and each member got about 12%. The argument was he got half for lyrics and split the other half equally for writing the music. ridiculous.
He makes me want to snap out of the decade-long, post-art school stupor that has stunted my creativity. I want to start painting again. Have fun doing it, instead of worrying that it's going to suck, and then never start.
Felt this! This might sound fucked up or like skewed but you only have one life and if you were to never wake up again then the chances of ever painting or doing anything else that you loved would be lost. What I'm trying to convey is that you only have one life so live it to your best. I hinder myself a lot and it sucks ass so this is all too familiar. We often listen to others more than ourselves and play by societies rules. We are also too stuck in our heads, but I suggest still going forth through the uncertainty, for you might find hidden gems.
I love the Porno for Pyros albums too. The first one felt likes saying, "let's explore ideas. and fuck you if you don't like it." The second one felt romantic, like if Neil Diamond was raised on on surfboards, LSD, and a whole different insight into life.
People with a few different disorders tend to focus on themselves more than the average person, I always thought it was narcissistic until I realized I do it out of insecurity and worrying about how I appear to others as a side effect of ADD and OCD, and that was when I understood David Lee Roth lol
I can’t say how much I love the way Perry looks so detached from everything but then has these insane flashes where his vision comes through like a punch to the gut. And geeze it hurts so good.

Kinda classy...but also creative and weird. A bit feminine and a bit masculine.
Perry's always been a stylish guy...even today. But while he just seems to wear basic designer fashion these days....back then, when he was throwing looks together on his own, he really created a stunning visual image for himself. He's a smart and creative guy....he clearly understood that visual presentation is a huge part of creating the aura surrounding the world of the music.
jane’s changed my life. i met casey niccoli in ventura about 20 years ago. man, i had to collect myself. told her what an important part of my life this music was, how they blew my little mind wide open. she was ultimately cool. gave me a necklace & we talked about the new album.
i know that feeling of everyone around you bringing you down instead of lifting you up. we should all be lifting each other up
This is a great interview.
You did good, Perry. Thank you!
This is the best interview I’ve ever seen
Perry's 2nd best look.
Liked his 03-09 look
Nah his 1996 was the best
God I love Perry... so honnest, pure and genuine art and a beautiful human being.
Was that my favorite rock interview of all time. It might me
Id love it if more people were this vulnerable and honest.....In life or in media/music industry
This interview is so fuckin sad. Don't let the rats get you down Perry. Thanks for the truly inspirational art!
Imagine being in a band with this guy and being on tour 24/7. I'm impressed the original Jane's Addiction were a thing for as long as they were.
Lol I could chill with him all day back then he seems cool af
Loved this band.. raw talented artists. Their sound is unique and the depth is awesome.
omg the ending. felt so bad for him when he was about to cry.
he is doped up
Such a unique time in history, it was like the 60s got mixed in with the 80s, that was what the 90s was kind of like, but way cooler.
At the end of the day he owns lollapalooza, so it turned out great. Just saw them with the Pumpkins in Milwaukee was fantastic
Jesus this guy knew what GenX teens wanted b4 they did.
Thank u Perry
Thank you very much for posting. Loved it
I liked Perry’s old nose
Did he change it?
yeah he looks way overdone now. WHY????? ugh
@@stjohnsrealtor5609 Just awful what he did to himself. Why, when you are basically the most biutiful man on the planet?
He got cheek implants.😮
U SERIOUS PERRY GOT PLASTIC SURGERY? he was a good lookin dude...wtf!!!!????
'I just want them to GO OFF....And say FUCK IT.'
If you took a picture of him today back in time and showed this Perry what he becomes he would splatter the walls behind him
I first heard Janes Addiction in 2004 when I was 14. True Nature was the opening track for MLB 2005. From there I discovered Nothing's Shocking, Ritual De Lo Habitual, and Strays.
Without question, if they never broke up, they would've been bigger than RHCP, no question.
I can’t even think why you would compare JA to that shitty RHCP
Am I the only one who thinks Perry is about to break down any minute in this interview?
I'm glad I watched this interview. It makes him seem a little more down to earth - less arrogant than the early days.
He kinda does sound on the verge of tears...especially at the end.
Then again, heavy opiate use often can make your voice sound like that....tense, constricted, reedy.
@@fipster102 what he's high as gas.
@@avedic Not really, in fact is the oposite: relaxed, uncensored. So evidently he's speaking from his mind and soul about the most important issue that came with his success. And he work it out, Lollapalooza is still alive, just like Jane's.
@@levgtz8158 if you think Jane's or Lollapalooza are still alive, I feel bad for you.
Wow... it's exactly what i did...seeing them in 92 or whatever. Trance.. i went outside..lost my mind..in joy. I will see them in Australia in Apr 23. I dont expect..but i'm ready to give if you are Perry.😍
If you conceive any of the passion in his words, youre holding back tears with me.
give me a break
If you perceive them build, being stripped
@@juliusebola9389 i would. But youd probably have a reason for not enjoying it.
Thank you bro I love you so much 😅😅😅😅
Coming’ down the mountain. Perry, I feel art the way you do. (Squawk box voice) do you feel like I do?
Beautiful. Thank you 🙏🏻❤️
"I don't just call lettuce a salad" - _Perry Farrell_
Make sense the other way round but ok.
the first time I saw this I was 15...22 years have gone by and I can't agree more!
Perry spoke so freely he had nothing to lose
Heroin will do that to you
perry is so pure. god i love him. also love him trashing what lollapalooza has turned into.
last few minutes heartfelt and moving
Best time in my life 90s
Perry was a mad artist, a true genius....you can really see the struggle he was having with his desire for art vs the demands of commercial music....im sad to say he lost this battle and in his own words he lost his creativity. A few years later you see a shift in his personality to who he is today....just watch any interviews he did in 92 onwards.....20 yrs on i had forgotten this interview and had formed the view, like many others that see all the rubbish he does now, that he was always a tool but that isnt true....at the time of early JA he was a music god...such a sad interview in retrospect, like watching the death of one of the worlds greatest artists
TheParkBadBoy hewas a drug addict back then, he has kids and a family now. He’s obviously changed
This interview felt haunting cause he was self aware that he got defeated by the labels demands and couldn’t be himself anymore or in his prime
Genius....bahhahahaha...
god damn this is eye opening
Man, I'm glad Perry is still around --- and rockin it out.
these guys were fucking cool back in the day...in the early nineties I wanted to be perry
Perry is by far one of the top front man of most bands in the 80s and 90s by far
This man is and always will be a god to me.
#PerryFerrell you are and always have been such a beautiful soul!!
I don’t give a fu@$ what you are on Perry great interview and speaks his mind . The Perry I see now looks different but I still love you man and still has the same passion and beliefs
Thank you boys.
Pure. Essential. Love. X
More like the pressures of heroin
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 that's maybe true. Jane's really disintegrated after this album and heroin is the likely culprit despite what he says. Like my other sad sack post herein, I understand that avenue. Most of my life it's been on and off, one thing or another. After my best friend died at 18 I fell in with a different group of people and I've essentially been trying to kill my self ever since, basically. In 1994 no one was suggesting therapy in the small northern town I came from. Wasn't even a consideration. Eh, ancient history now.
Just saw them a month ago with the Smashing pumpkins, they totally blew me away it was my first time ever.
Awesome video! I'm an old fan but never seen this side of Perry. Kinda felt like acting but hey that's fine.
perry has the voice of crispin glover and the stage presence of iggy pop.
Please refrain from putting Iggy Pop next to anyone....Iggy is the one and only, all else followed like starving lil bitches trying to live up to legend!
I don’t think Iggy would mind in this case.
I actually sa JA open for Iggy Pop in Miami
And with a mind for making art out of music just Andy Warhole
one of the best records ever recorded!
For anyone who feels a tragic decline in the music quality over the past few decades- pay close attention to this man
beautiful!!
Perrys honesty made me feel the same way.. starting to choke up.. ( DESPERATLY ) Trying not to lose it.. getting anger tears... trying to make m.f.r.s understand!!! God bless him!!! love you Perry!!!!
At the end I look them as really healthy guys,
Beautiful mind of lollapalooza..
Also now that he got a nose job and his teeth fixed... he's not Perry Farrell that i knew and loved
stinkypanda77 yes he is
He looks ridiculous now. All that plastic surgery and dental work. Looks like a hollywood tool.
D. Probaly that the way he like to look
The Perry Farrell you have knew and loved was simply word play on " Periferal" .. His real name is Moshe Finkelstein..
Great, so people aren't anything more that their nose and teeths. And you didn't recognize any of your friends after their fix their teeths, their habits or their life.
Don't you just love everything about him!!!
"senores y senoras, nosotros tenemos mas influencia con sus hijos que tu tiene. peros los queremos. creado y regalo de los angeles, juana's addiccion."
They are called Grabblers and they take your soul. Specially when ya let them.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was a still of Sean Penn from Fast Times A Ridgemont High.
""ladies and gentlemen, we have more influence over your children
than you do, but we THEM"
WE LOVE THEM
Wow! I never though anyone loved the Kittens except me! Great, dude.
kick dragon perry, love ur artistry in music and art, amazing stuff, love yah.
“I could give a shit about the stack of green”
Lie. The band almost broke up in 87/88 because he wanted a HUGE percentage of credit to get even more money than the rest of the band.
Love me some of Jane's salad
Perry says he doesn’t care about stacks of greens but if true he wouldn’t have pressured the band to take less than They deserved and for him to take 50% of publishing, leaving the other 3 to split the remaining 50%. Eric was super pissed that’s the beginning of the end.. then when Eric swooped Perry’s chick.. well that was the end... janes ain’t janes without Eric.
Eric ..... stoli olive amelia
50%? Only 50%? Lol Perry took 67% and each member got about 12%. The argument was he got half for lyrics and split the other half equally for writing the music. ridiculous.
Perry is just so touching in this interview.
But he's right to create a space where people can let loose.
Good focus. Fuk it!!!
I give you the croutons, the seasonings....the good salad dressings!!! I love this band.
I loved that man!
I love him, too. In 2022 ✌️
He makes me want to snap out of the decade-long, post-art school stupor that has stunted my creativity.
We are also too stuck in our heads, but I suggest still going forth through the uncertainty, for you might find hidden gems.
this touched me
I love the Porno for Pyros albums too. The first one felt likes saying, "let's explore ideas. and fuck you if you don't like it." The second one felt romantic, like if Neil Diamond was raised on on surfboards, LSD, and a whole different insight into life.
The 2nd is in my top 5 albums of all time from any artist
He spent absolutely zero time talking about the band. It’s all about him
That is how it is edited anyway. Who knows what the context or premise of the interview was.
People with a few different disorders tend to focus on themselves more than the average person, I always thought it was narcissistic until I realized I do it out of insecurity and worrying about how I appear to others as a side effect of ADD and OCD, and that was when I understood David Lee Roth lol
I love his ending quote... hell yea...
