  • James Duggan Shihan and Kain Johnson Sensei come head to head in this high energy round of kumite. Round of the day by two veteran martial artists. Enjoy.
This footage was taken during the annual Kumite in the Park AKA End of Year Bash held at Whites Hill Reserve, Brisbane by students of Brisbane Goju Karate (www.brisbanegojukarate.com.au).

To clarify, every year we finish with an end of year bash which is around 25-30 rounds of contact kumite. Hence the heavy breathing. If your not impressed at all, please feel free to drop into our dojo and show us how it is really done. We have plenty of extra focus mits and could use a punching bag.

A splendid display of how Karate would look like in a close up fight. I practice shito-ryu and we have some of the same type of kumite on our dojo, but we tend to stay more true to point-sparring, so it's kind of like a full contact/point-sparring hybrid, so to speak. But you guys have a more "Zanshin"-approach which in my opinion is very effective and more close to a real situation. And a light slap when the opponent droppes his guard is always healthy!
    Osu!

Hi RyanFromUltrasound! Thank you for your comment. Personally I would say there are may be other Goju Ryu dojos out there that spar like this but they would be rare. We are fortunate to have Jamie Duggan Shihan who is an exceptional kumite and karate instructor leading us. If anyone knows of other Goju Ryu dojos out there sparring with this level of intensity we would love to get in contact with them :)

one thing i think people are forgetting when they say things like " needs better footwork"...they've been sparring all day. look at their clothes--their ragged by this point. they've taken countless amounts of leg kicks, and roundhouses. i think with that in mind i think the footwork is pretty good especially from sensei kain johnson. people have unrealistic expectations about how somone should look. some people go 4 or 5 2 min rounds in kickboxing and their technique, their guard, and their footwork become sloppy after fatigure set in. they're going 3 minute rounds except they're completing a 30 man kumite. trust me....your footwork wont look as good as sensi kain if you fight that many people in one day.

Tough sparring. To be expected of many Seiwakai schools. Good stuff.

Hi 82vunit thanks for your comment. Yes our mantra is usually 'hands up' but obviously this one is more a demonstration of what happens when you drop your guard ;)

Hi Chamoorrin, G'day from Australia to Mexico! Glad you have found something that you like in the video. Our belief is that there definitely is a place for hooks and uppercuts in our Goju Ryu. Whilst difficult to explain without video, the key in any karate technique is to ensure that they energy flow is strong and effective. This generally means keeping the technique close to the body, so only use in close quarters kumite. Like spinning on a chair, when you tuck your legs in you spin faster.

@chamoorrin About the uppercut - depending on your hand position. A chudan uki also serves as an uppercut. Godan uki, right before turning your wrist and lifting your elbow serves as an uppercut as well. I suggest practicing your blocks for it's also a strike. Godan uki consists of 4 strikes.

  • @iSTANDMA
    @iSTANDMA 11 ปีที่แล้ว

@chamoorrin the answer to your question about hook punch without loosing the goju aspect is... If you're aiming for the head with a hook, step and slide to close in and do a godan uki. Godan uki (upper block) is also a hook punch and an elbow strike to the side depending on the location of your assailant to your embusen.

My mistake, I was referring to Jodan uke. I apologize for spelling error.

Great video, love the way you work in hooks and uppercuts (and the sneaky haito from your Shihan, nice). I think you guys have got the right idea incorporating other punches besides straight line jabs and crosses, into your sparring, as well as low leg kicks. Anyone who criticises you should turn up to one of these events. Haven't done it in a while but I remember what 25 rounds of that kind of sparring feels like, ouch ! The pat on the back at the end is what Karate is all about. Cheers !

Where is your dojo located at? If it is anywhere near Southern California i would love to stop by and take a look at the conditions of your punching bags. You are more than welcome to stop by the Villa Parlk Boxing Centre in Pasadena Ca if you are close by. I would love to spar with any of you guys, wether it be in the ring at my club or in your dojo. Since your "punching bag" comment seems to show the lack of humbless that you have, i would love to see what you're about.

    Hello guys! Good job
I am writing from Mexico I practise shito ryu , and goju ryu but i have never done this kaind of kumite. I do practise hook and uppercut but they look alot like bocxing. m question is How shoulf i practise those punches without loosing the karate aspect. I know that we have all those tsukis, but they comninfg from a different gurad look a bit funny.
Thank you i wiil appreciate your answer.

Hi drexloc. The original comment was directed to someone trolling. Rest assured, we are humble and we appreciate any feedback we get but patience isn't given to those that aim to take everything and give nothing.

@RyanFromUltrasound. Not all due to liability purposes. I do have kumite sessions for my adult karateka just like on the video. I too from Los Angeles, let me know if you wanna goju friendly sometime. OSU

    very nice work,
best?- yeah, ok, we are your guests, so we should remain polite... that said, love the budo spirit of your dojo (probably fueled a bit by the camera?)
anyway, it´s always a challenge to try to apply kata concepts in kumite/irikumi, as these usually include follow ups to full contact hits to vulnerable body parts.
    thanks for sharing, great skills.

This stinks of money making..... Some of the worst kumite I have seen, not only technically inept, but lacking in any speed or power. Its like two kids in a playground. If you want take up karate then don't do this as it isn't.....
